Why?
'You're married!' The statements come and go, Explanations rise to my lips, As I figure out why I did this. Words that should defend my reason, For sacrificing my youth. That should bring a reaction, A justification for the band that tightly wraps around my finger. A band of love so often mistaken for a noose, And the finger my neck. 'Yes' I reply '25' I reply '2 years' I reply 'Yes, 23' I reply in order to confirm to them their maths is correct and that I haven't done a Benjamin button, Coming from an old age when marriage is acceptable and transformed into this weird cultural phenomenon. "I couldn't imagine myself to be married." Is the standard reply to my affirmation that I am from my peers. That by being married I have somehow run the race of frivolous youth before them. That my enjoyment of life has gone, I should have my kids, And they shall be grown before I am 30 I shall retire at 35 and die at 40. This weird timescale of social aging. The questioning of why, Why get married goes round and round their heads. Some have partners, Some a string of broken relationships And fuckboys. 'Why?' I respond, The disdain for this question has changed in time from the first. When I asked for permission of my mother in law, "Why?" 'Because I love her' seems like such an empty answer. Yet it is how I feel. The romanticism of love that plagues every teenage mind, Cinema And teen novel, Cheapens this for me and others. The reason why Is because, My future fails to be without her. The sun does not warm my skin without her smile. The birds song does not sound as sweet without her laughter. And my heart, My heart does not beat without her touch. That is why, that for every moment I can just Be with her Lie next to her as she sleeps, Hold her as she weeps, Dance with her in her joy, That is why I married her, Because I could do this without a ring, I could live with her and be with her But with the ring, There is no fall back plan, I am with her till the end. I am with her through the fights And the laughter. Through the song And the march I will be there with her for everything, Because she is mine and I am hers.
