The Forest
We parted ways in the forest
Swearing to leave breadcrumbs
So that we could find our way back to each other.
We said goodbye
With every good intention to keep the promise
Dreading to leave the glade
And already longing to return.
But when we finally did leave—
I left alone.
Walking amidst those shifting shadows
Hearing the voices and losing my way—
I began to forget.
I forgot why we had promised
Then I forgot why I had ever left the glade
Then I forgot that we had promised
Then I remembered—
Then I forgot the glade.
Eventually the bread crumbs trailed off—
I got hungry,
The squirrels got hungry,
Maybe God got hungry.
It was okay.
I was only dropping them out of habit
The reason long forgotten.
I knew I was heading north
But I forgot why.
Soon the journey became the destination.
The forest became my home
North became my goal
And I imagined more reasons to reach it.
I hope you’re not waiting back in the glade for me.
I’m not coming back—and I forgot why.
