Gustav Klimt - Farmhouse in Upper Austria (1911)
“You wander aimlessly, looking for shelter in broken rooftops and battered driveways. You will find a home within yourself before you find it in others. This, I promise you.”
— Noor Shirazie
“I love you, that means I’m not just here for the pretty parts. I’m here no matter what.”
— Claudia Gray
THE IMPORTANT THINGS HAPPEN BETWEEN THE PARENTHESES
Someone learned how to drive today. Found the words they've spent a lifetime searching for. Sung a well-deserved anthem after conquering a fear. Survived yet another season to watch the tree in the backyard turn orange. Had a peaceful day at work. Added milk to their coffee and smiled at marbling marriage. Smelled firewood in the crisp, twilight air. Went to bed at the same time as their wife. Cracked a dad joke to their daughter and heard her giggle. Slept in for the first time in nine Saturdays. Slowed their breath while blazing through errands. Allowed themselves to daydream for two fulfilling minutes. Listened to a podcast while cooking dinner. Took their toddler for a stroll in the neighbourhood. Gave their loved one a bear hug. Apologized for that one thing and felt their shoulders drop in relief. Swore they heard God talk back as the breeze brushed past their ears.
Savoured the tiny delights like they're monumental. Because they are.

“You’re a pretty girl, but I often think your eyes have seen too much for your age.”

A VOICE CANNOT REMAIN SHACKLED FOREVER
When the revolution awakens from its slumber, be there to greet it. Morning coffee, check. Scrambled eggs, check. Fury channeled toward liberty, check.
The dreams of the masses have not been forgotten, merely stashed away until it discovers it can remove the muzzle. It bursts at the seams, rabid and restless.
It is time to be heard, louder than the endless explosions. Louder than the sirens. Louder than rage itself.

“There was once a solid history between us before she attempted to rewrite it.”
— Noor Shirazie
“Who has not asked himself at some time or other: am I a monster or is this what it means to be a person?”
— Clarice Lispector, The Hour of the Star
IN THE TRENCHES WITH NO ONE BUT YOURSELF
When the regret eats away at you the most, you distract yourself with all the flowers you can still plant. (There are still patches of green left if you look for them.) Loneliness never felt this jagged, but you hang glow-in-the-dark stars from the ceiling to let a little light in.
You beg for anything to pull you out of this feeling, but you know you must sink further into it before the water stops rising.
Before the hard lessons have been learned for good.
Available for purchase on Amazon, Alibris, Barnes & Noble, and Magrudy. The book can also be purchased on Book Depository and Wordery with no shipping costs worldwide. If you already have a copy of my book, feel free to leave a rating and review on Goodreads or Amazon!
“I suffered you in a silence that drowned out my voice.”
— Noor Shirazie
“Outside the window Sky and earth exchange silver. In the moonlight I forget I’m human.”
— Wang Xiaoni, White Moon
THERE IS ONLY YOU
You turn love into something suspiciously easy. It's not something I've ever needed to question. One modest gesture after another, backed with good intention.
Everything is as it should be when my steps complement yours. Our journey continues to surprise me, with its many peaks, dips, and contours.
You're the balm for my callouses, just when I believe there's no remedy— tailored banter, knowing smiles, every compassionate word said to me.
At the core of my joy, you perpetually reside. You've built a home inside of me. Upon its walls, your name's inscribed.
