BIOGRAPHY

Hermione was born to very young parents. They were both thirteen and extreme Harry Potter nerds who got pregnant their very first time having sex. Their parents forced them to give her up for adoption and that’s how she ended up in her mom's care. Her name is Addison Montgomery and she's this bad ass world-class surgeon. Her siblings and she live in Seattle. She started taking ballet when she learned to walk because she was obsessed with this ballerina teddy bear she received as an infant. She got accepted into a ballet company at 3 and has been studying there since. She started reading Harry Potter books when she was six because of this letter she got from her birth parents that her mom gave to her when she was a little younger than that. They talked about their lives and what they wanted to be when they grew up. They also explained why they named her Hermione and she’s wanted to read the books ever since.

The rest of her life was pretty normal, with the nickname Nia because some people couldn't pronounce Hermione. She grew up a pretty happy life. They all played instruments, took different language classes, and traveled the world. Elementary school was great but middle school was a little tougher. She wasn't sure who exactly she was then which should've been fine because all kids that age don't know who they are. The kids her age seemed to know who they were and where they stood but Nia felt differently. She sometimes didn't feel like herself and she talked to her mom about it and she got Nia into therapy. It helped a lot. She discovered who she really was and that was that she didn't fit in. Most days she felt like Nia and loved every minute of it... but then some days Nia felt foreign to her. She had completely different interests and carried herself more masculine. She felt like she was a boy. Her mother asked her if she was sure and she told her that she didn't know. She's the one who told Nia that it was okay to not know. That's sometimes even she didn't know who she was. People are always changing; they're fluid. That's how's she considers herself now: fluid.

And that's how Hero was born! She decided to give her other self a name. It wasn't until high school that she joined the LGBT club and found out there were more people just like her. She also learned that she’s actually considered non-binary, basically she can't be defined. Some days she feels like Nia and she's bad ass. Then other days she feels like Hero and he's pretty bad ass too. And that it was okay. Well, at least it was okay... Hermione was sexually assaulted by a bully at her school for being different. She struggled in school after that; never telling anyone what happened to her. She barely managed to graduate. Just finishing high school, Hermione isn’t sure if she wants to go to college or continue chasing her ballet dreams. So, basically, she has no idea what she wants to do, who she is nor where she fits in this world. She’s a walking question mark with bunch of secrets.

“Happy Halloween, witches,” she smiled hard. Hermione was having a good time at the Halloween party the hospital was throwing. She almost forgot that her arm was still in a cast and that she’d been sulking the minute before they got there. However, she’s glad she came. She wouldn’t have come if it weren’t for her mother’s urging. She walked up to a familiar face and grinned, “You look hot.”

Being fresh out of the psych ward of the hospital, Lexie was actually scared of what to expect. She hadn’t shown her face to her peers and their families since she went in. She didn’t know who knew what, who was going to judge her. She was good now. Back on her meds, a slightly stronger dose, she was stable. She was Lexie again. As she stood there in her goldfish costume, she felt very exposed, but that was because it was just a bodysuit. Definitely not her norm. She gave a soft wave to the person approaching one of the dessert tables where she was. “You look good. The uh.. The worms in dirt is really good.”

She wasn’t in a celebrating mood. If it were up to her, she’d be at home passing out candy to the trick-or-treaters but her mother urged her to come to the event. She felt that it was the least she could do since she already broke her mother’s heart by deciding not to go to college. She could at least keep her happy by going to the party. Arm still in a cast, Hermione was determined to enjoy her Halloween. She dressed up as a fairy and wanted the night to be as magical as her costume. Walking into the party, she headed straight for the dessert table and ran into Lexie. “Thanks,” she smiled at the compliment. “Are you a goldfish?” she asked taking the dessert Lexie suggested.

“I used to think my parents were both fully functional adults, but now I’m beginning to question that,” Annabelle responded in kind. “Are any of the adults in our lives truly functional? Or are they just that good at deluding us to think they are?”

“I think we all believed our parents were fully functional adults at one point of time,” she shook her head laughing. “I think they’re all deluding us into believing they are. I don’t think anyone I know truly has the life together.”

“Your costume ideas seem much easier to attain,” Annabelle responded with a laugh. “How does someone dress up as someone who has their shit together when they indeed do not have any shit together in their life? What does a truly functional adult look like?” Her questions were mostly rhetorical, though the more she thought about it, the more she was liking the abstract costume idea.

“I don’t know,” she shrugged. “I’ve never really seen a truly functional adult. Unless you want to count my mom. Though I’ve seen her in some rough conditions...” She thought about it again. “Yeah, I’ve never seen a truly functional adult.”

“I was thinking more of a fairy or like a witch but someone having their shit together seems like a good option too,” she teased. Hermione opted out of college and Annabelle made it seem like it was a great choice. She couldn’t stress over school and dance. It would be too much.

Giving a meek smile at Hermione’s scream. she hoped it was reassuring. She wanted to offer some actual reassurance, but whenever she moved her head the room spun - and she’d rather focus on trying to minimise the damage to Hermione’s arm. There was no magical fix to it in the middle of the diner, but if the basics were done it’d make healing easier.  

Taking the bandage from the first aid kit, she bandaged up Hermione’s arm as quickly as she could without moving it too much. “I think we’re going to be here until someone can get you to hospital.” She knew that there could be worse injuries around than a broken arm, but she couldn’t bring herself to care in that moment. If she had to, she’d scream until someone agreed to get Hermione to hospital as quickly as possible. 

Finishing with the bandage, she moved to take the shoelaces from her sneakers - before rolling the jacket up so it could be placed under Hermione’s arm. Taking the shoelaces to secure the jacket to Hermione’s arm. “There… All done for now.” Reaching for Hermione’s good arm so that she could squeeze her hand. “I can… try flagging down a paramedic for you? But I… Don’t want to leave you. Unless you feel up for trying to walk outside?” She reasoned there had to be more help waiting out there, and while she knew the pounding in her head would hate any movement - any pain for herself seemed an easy price to pay to help Hermione out. 

It was already dark in the diner and the blurry vision from her tears didn’t help. Hermione wanted more than anything to get out of there but she wasn’t sure if it was the safest move. Watching Louise as she bandaged up her arm, she tried wiping her tears away with her good arm. “I want my mom,” she cried out. Her mother would know exactly what to do in this situation. If only she spent the day hanging out with her, like her mother wanted, maybe they wouldn’t be in this situation. Maybe they’d be at the fair still, riding rides and eating fried oreos.

The pain in her arm started to subside a little once it was bandaged up. She watched through blurry eyes as Louise made a makeshift splint with her jacket and Louise’s shoelaces. “Thank you,” she said through her tears once she was finished. She gladly took Louise’s hand in her free one and let her give her a reassuring squeeze. She nodded her head as she listened and her eyes grew wide at the thought of being left here while Louise looked for a paramedic. “I’ll go with you,” she said but she was unsure how steady she would be. She hoped she’d be able to walk out of her and that her broken arm was the extent of her injuries.

If there was one tiny saving grace that she could find, it was that the lights weren’t on. The dim light emitting from her phone torch seemed all that she could handle in the moment. She wanted to offer to let Hermione squeeze her hand if the pain got too much, but she needed both her hands to clean the cut which ruled that out. “Just scream it out if you need to, okay? Promise I won’t judge.” And it wasn’t as though anyone would pay too much notice with the noise around them. Hell she felt like joining in with the screaming, the only thing stopping her was the splitting headache - and not wanting to draw attention to herself. Hermione on the other hand could draw all the attention she wanted if it meant someone coming over to help quicker. 

“Don’t suppose you have a jacket in your bag?” The question posed half because she needed the answer, and half to try and keep Hermione’s mind off her arm as she started to clean it, pressing the cloth down on Hermione’s arm as firm as she could without hurting her too much. “Because depending on when someone gets here, we might need a make-shift splint and my jacket’s not the cleanest.” The fact it was ripped was something that they could work with - the fact it was covered in dust and dirt, didn’t make it the best thing to put on her arm. 

Hermione wasn’t ready for the pain that came along with Louise cleaning her arm. When Louise said she could scream as loud as she wanted, she thought to herself that she wouldn’t need to. Boy, was she wrong. She didn’t even get the chance to answer Louise’s question before the scream left her mouth. She did have a jacket in her bag that was luckily still attached to her. 

When the pain started to become a little more tolerable, Hermione wiped her tears and opened her bag with her free arm. She pulled out her jacket and handed it to Louise, “Here”. Tears continued to fall from her eyes. She just couldn’t get them to stop. “How do we get out of here?”

When trying to stand seemed to do nothing but make the room spin, she settled for crawling over to Hermione - finding it much easier to stay focused with her eyes focused on the ground. The pace was still a little too quick and seemed to make the nausea kick up a gear, but she’d readily ignore that when Hermione needed actual help. “Just… Let me know if moving it hurts you more okay?” Taking a deep breath before moving to try and move the rock, when she got it off, her eyes darted down to Hermione’s arm - forcing herself not to wince the way she wanted to. 

“I’m fine.” It wasn’t the entire truth, but she wasn’t going to share that when Hermione needed attention more than she did. “Wait here okay?” The words out before the sarcastic little voice in her head questioned where else Hermione would go. Crawling back over to where she’d been before, she looked around for her bag - groaning when she found it under some rubble. She couldn’t get it out, but she could at least get her hand inside to grab the first aid kit she always kept in it before making her way back to Hermione. 

“I’m sure someone will be here soon…” They had to be there soon, there was medical personnel at the fair - she had to imagine they’d be diverted to the diner as soon as it was safe - but until then, she could at least do what she could to help out. “But for now, think it’s you, me and the first aid kit. If we can at least get it cleaned and bandaged it’s better than nothing.” At least she was hoping that was all they’d have to do, and someone with proper medical knowledge could step in after that. “Are you okay if I start cleaning it?” That at least seemed easy, and not something she could mess up no matter how fuzzy everything felt in the moment.

She sat there in tears as she listened to her friend’s instructions. The pain was making her nauseous and dizzy but she did her best to stay alert. The screams and crying from the other people around her made her nervous. How long have they been trapped in here? How long before they got out? All of these thoughts and more ran through the girl’s head as she waited for Louise to return to her side.

It’s like Louise read her mind when she reassured Hermione that help would be here soon. The girl just nodded, not able to get her words out through her tears. Everything hurt but the pain in her arm was the worst and she couldn’t stop crying. When the blonde asked her if she’d be okay with her cleaning her arm up, she nodded. It couldn’t hurt anymore than it already did, could it?

For some reason, the one thought she could seem to process was; “There is no such thing as an omen. Destiny does not send us heralds. She is too wise or too cruel for that.” And cruel it seemed, at the very least cruel irony. Escaping the fair with Hermione in search of more passable food and to run away from her problems, had been the high point of her night. Getting to be with someone she knew she could truly call a friend, one who’d messed up their own plans for the night to help Louise - it was the first time she’d been relaxed since she stepped foot into the fair. That high point didn’t seem to last long, before it divebombed into the lowest point of the night. 

She couldn’t say for certain that she could detail what had happened, one second she was talking with Hermione about something stupid, the next their conversation was broken by screams, then came the lights that seemed all too bright, the screams increasing both in pitch and volume. before that awful sound echoed around them.

From that point it didn’t seem like any time had passed - the fact she’d been standing and was suddenly on the floor told her that at least a little time had passed. Wincing as she pushed herself up, her head protesting all the way - soon the screams were back ringing in her ears. Glancing around as much as the pounding headache allowed, the nausea she was feeling increased tenfold watching people try to check on their loved ones, or those who were hurt the most. Everything in her screamed to do the same, but she couldn’t yet. Not until she knew Hermione was okay, then maybe they could team up and help others - because Hermione had to be okay, there wasn’t another option. 

Trying to push past the somewhat blurred vision, she narrowed her eyes to see if that worked better, looking around her until she spotted who she was looking for. “Hermione!” Wincing once more as she moved too quickly over towards the other, she settled for crawling the short distance. “Are you okay?” The words softer than they should have been, part of her terrified to actually voice the question when that risked the answer from Hermione being ‘no, I’m not okay’.

One moment, she was waiting on her food with Louise and the next moment, she was on the ground stuck underneath a pile of large rocks. She must have blacked out. When she came to, all she heard were screams. She was in excruciating pain and tears formed in her eyes. With blurred vision, she tried to look around her for Louise, who was standing beside her before all of this. She tried to move but found herself stuck under the rubble. One arm free, she started moving the stones off her legs and upper body. That’s when she heard her name being called.

Hermione tried to move the rubble off of her arm but it was too heavy so she settled for waving with her free arm to get Louise’s attention. Still in tears, she tried to sound calm as she answered her friend, “I’m okay. My arm is stuck under this rock though. Can you help me?” She was scared to say that she thought her arm was broken. Once they got her arm free, it was confirmed that it was indeed broken. She held her arm in her hand as she looked to Louise, “Are you okay?”

Juliette, despite how she acted with most people in her life, was fiercely protective of her siblings, Hermione especially. “Have you blocked him? Reported him?” she asked. “What’s his user? I’ll give him a piece of my mind,” she said. Issues with the law or not, she wouldn’t just sit by and let someone harass her sister.

“I’ve blocked him but he makes fake pages just to get at me,” she shrugged. Hermione pulled out her phone to find his latest username and handed the phone to her sister. "That’s the profile he’s been messaging me off of.”

“Trying to go on the bumper cars.” Annabelle shook her head in dismay, still not believing she’d been dumb enough to try. She was definitely way out of her comfort zone and she regretted coming here in the first place. “Can a person get PTSD from a car accident? Because if so, I think I have it.”

“Why was it such a bad idea?” she started but paused at Annabelle’s question. “Oh,” she said, realizing that the girl had been in a car accident and was more than likely suffering from PTSD. “You were trying to go on the bumper cars after a car accident. What? Trying to face your fears or something? But yeah, you can get PTSD from anything traumatic.”

“Oh… No, no, you can go with them, I’m fine.” The words rushed, not wanting Hermione’s day to be ruined as well. “I just ran into someone I didn’t think I’d see again. And you know…  Never been great at confrontation, so I tried to pretend everything was fine until… Well until I stormed off and right into you. But really… It’s stupid, I can walk it off, if you want to go back to the rides and have some fun. Somebody should, right?” 

“They’re just going to be waiting in a long line,” she shrugged. “I’ll catch up later. You’re more important to me than some swings anyway.” Hermione’s brows furrowed as she listened to her friend. “I’m sorry you had to deal with that,” she said softly, arm on the other girl’s shoulder. “You had every right to storm away. If you want, I can walk with you? Or we could ride something together?”

“Awh, well you should do what it is you want to do. It might not be her vision for you, but you’re her baby girl, and she loves you. As parents, we want to see our kids happy,” April said quietly, running her hand gently across the back of Hermione’s hair. If it was her daughter saying this to her, she’d be saying the exact same thing. Sure, she had her own hopes for what her children would do, but all in all, she just wanted them to be happy. Hopefully Addison felt the same way. April didn’t want to speak for her, so she did her best to remain neutral yet supportive.

“You really think so?” she asked when April said parents only wanted to see their children happy. She knew her mother loved her and she’s always been supportive. But all they ever talked about for plans after high school was college. Hermione even applied and got accepted into schools. She was sure the news would upset her mother. She just hoped that she wouldn’t be too disappointed where she wouldn’t be supportive in her goals.

“No, I know so.” Was it a cheesy ‘correction’ to make? Yes, but she fully stood by her words. Hermione was an amazing dancer, and she was positive anyone who saw her could realise that. “I think the news you don’t want to go to college would be easier to take when she knows you have a plan. Maybe talk to your old dance teachers too? Ask for some kind of recommendation letter so that you can show your mom that there’s professionals who think you should go for it as well. What normally helps when you’re nervous? I always write things out when I need to ‘talk’ to people, make it like a script - but I’m guessing that doesn’t work for everyone.” 

“That’s a good idea,” she nodded along as her friend spoke. “Maybe if enough of my teachers tell her it’s a good idea, she’ll go for it.” Hermione stared off dreamily thinking of the stage and the lights. She couldn’t wait to be on the stage one day, doing the thing she loved most and sharing it with the ones she loved. “When I’m nervous, I just dance it out for a minute or two until the nerves go away. I don’t know if dancing while talking to my mother would be an easy quest. Maybe I could invite her to the studio and really let her see me dance? Then I can tell her my decision.”

She was sure that coming up with a dance that she would be auditioning with wasn’t an easy thing to do and so she nodded. “That sounds like it will be a challenge, but, it also seems like it will be well worth it in the end! How long have you been working with this dance teacher?”

“Yeah, I think it’ll all be worth it in the end,” she said with a small smile. She was confident in her talent but she hoped that it was enough to get her through auditions and into the ballet company. “We’ve been working together for about three years. That’s when I started taking the advanced classes at our studio.”
