Zelda was convinced that he was going to kill her. Why else would he bring her here? She didn’t want to die. Not like this. She wanted to see Impa. She wished with all her heart that the Sheikah woman would break down the door right now and save her. Why had she left her all alone? This was too much for her to handle on her own.
It felt like she had been held down for hours. Yet, he wasn’t doing anything. The sounds coming from him reminded her of an injured dog. Even in her panic, she could tell that the creature was distressed. Why?
What had she done to him?
Back at the old guard house, he hadn’t reacted to her knife because he didn’t think, didn’t comprehend, that she had the means to actually harm him. But then Zelda had tried to blind him.
Was he scared?
Zelda felt the pressure lessen on her wrists and carefully opened her eyes, just slightly. Perhaps she could try to talk to him, kinder this time, and convince him to stop?
He suddenly backed away from her. She could see the red glow of his eyes in the darkness, but she couldn’t make out his expression. Zelda sat up, not without effort. Her wrists hurt. “Wait-“
The loud bang of the door made her jump. Before she had time to try anything else, he was gone.
He was still saying those things. She’ll be safe? He was protecting her? Did he really think she would believe that? Did he believe it? If anything, she felt safer now that he had left the room.
Standing up was more difficult than expected. Zelda swayed in place, her whole body shaking like a leaf. She was very cold. No wonder, she had passed out outside in the rain, hadn’t she?
Slowly, she forced herself forward. When he left, there had been a light. Or at least, something less dark than total darkness. She just had to reach that spot.
Zelda felt around blindly until her hands found a wooden surface. The door was old but firm, it wouldn’t budge when she pushed against it. Locked. The princess traced her fingers until she located the metal keyhole.
She searched her pockets for the knife and slipped it into the lock, trying to pick it. Maybe it would be more effective to use his blade to pry the door open? But that might make a lot of noise. Not to mention how long it might take before she found it.

To those around, the exchange had been entirely quiet, the creature just standing there in the hallway with his eyes closed. Concentrating. Informing Ganondorf of his successful capture of the Princess, the usurper had been silent in response first. Link felt the oppressive, nauseating presence drill into his mind as the Gerudo checked his memory and mind for evidence of his success. He hated him. Obeyed him without question. Finally, Ganondorf’s reply came, deep voice filling his head.
❝I will come myself.❞
The presence retreated, just for a moment, before it returned at full force. Like a specter, the massive form of the Gerudo formed in the dark corridor leading to the basement, the power almost palpable just by standing in front of him. Link felt how the agony within him subsided, pushed away by the sheet force of Ganondorf’s aura.
He stood proud, his red hair like a flare in the dimly lit house as it fanned out over the crimson fabric of the cape draped over his shoulders. Golden eyes only regarded Link for a moment, taking in his unexpectedly muddled appearance with a low hum. He could see pain in the creature’s face. A sight that was as amusing as it was annoying, really; he had created the shade without the ability to feel pain to such an extend. But he supposed, if anyone had the ability and power to injure his pawns like this, it would undoubtedly be the Princess.
With that, his attention focused onto the door further down the hallway. The King could feel her presence behind it, his triforce piece resonating with hers as it echoed the call back to him. Undoubtedly, Zelda could feel him as well.
His lips curled into a cruel smile and he began to move, stepping past Link without as much as sparing the creature another glance. Ganondorf would take care of him later... right now, the Princess was his main concern. For seven years, she had evaded him, a thorn in his side in all of his plans, along with her knight. They had dared to oppose him and finally even confronted him in battle. And they had been strong, he did not deny that. They had pushed him to the edge of his own abilities, earning both his respect and fueling his hatred. But they hadn’t been strong enough.
The boy had died, but Zelda once again had managed to outwit him with the help of her sages before he could capture her once more. But now that chase was over as well.
Ganondorf could feel her react to his presence, sense the growing agitation in her aura as he drew closer. Unhurriedly; there was no need to rush. She had nowhere to run. But eventually he came to a halt in front of the door, pausing for a moment as he relished in the moment. Then, by force of his magic, the locking mechanism blew open, the door swinging open and revealing his muscular form almost completely filling in the door frame.
❝Your stunt comes to an end, your Highness.❞

Navi sighed a bit–relieved, yet not eager to continue. “I’m…not like that, obviously. I mean, when the Great Deku Tree created me, he tried to emulate what the Kokiri have with you and me…and he didn’t get it exactly right.”
It felt wrong, speaking of her father this way. She had no ill will toward him, and didn’t blame him for anything. This was just how it had happened. Even so, Navi hated to dwell on anything that could tarnish him in Link’s mind.
She plowed on; he didn’t need to know all of the details. “I was bonded to you, but that meant you were the only person I could talk to. When the Great Deku Tree died, that bond slowly became more and more tenuous, until it just…dissolved altogether. You had just replaced the Master Sword for the last time, and I tried to talk to you, and I just…I knew. Something wasn’t right. And I panicked, and I ran…and I’m so, so sorry, Link.”
Navi bit her lip and choked back a sob. She waited for his response and looked at the floor, the ceiling, at anything but him. She couldn’t recall when she had started crying–but now she couldn’t stop. She’d take any reaction from him–anger, indignation, frustration–she just wanted him to say something.
{ △ }―
After her explanation, he was silent for a long while, having to let the information he had just gotten sink in. Their bond was... gone? How had he not known? How had he not realised? Navi had always been a special existence to him, but it had never... felt any differently than his ‘bond’ to Saria. A warmth, a sensation of comfort. A feeling of home... but for Navi it had been different. There had been something more, something he had failed to take notice of.
Link didn’t know what to say. There were many things he wanted to say, so many things he wanted, needed, to apologize for, but he just couldn’t find the right words. How must she have felt during their journey, feeling this connection between them fade, bit by bit...? And yet she had never said anything and supported him the entire time.
Tears once again filled his own eyes as well, each beat of his heart painful in his chest. Slowly, shakily, the hero got back to his feet, taking a step towards the bed. Towards Navi. Reaching out with a shaking hand to place it onto her shoulder. Gentle, almost as if afraid of touching her - a stark contrast to earlier, where he had been terrified of letting go. Waiting for her to look at him before pulling her into his arms in a hug.
Only then did he finally find his voice again, sounding cracked but letting him say the words he wanted to say the most right now.
❝I’m sorry, Navi- You had to carry that burden all alone and I never realised. I’m so sorry.❞

The sharp sound of metal hitting the wall made the princess flinch, interrupting her panicked struggle for a moment. What was that? It was so dark, she couldn’t tell what was going on. Was there someone else there?
Unable to ignore the stinging sensation on her neck, she instinctively covered it with her free hand. It was sticky, and almost unbearably hot against her cold fingers. Was she bleeding?
Zelda’s heart sank. What had she been thinking? She had noticed that there was a blade there! At the very least, the cut couldn’t be very deep, she was still breathing. She needed to calm down.
The demon on top of her suddenly grabbed her other wrist, restricting her movements further. Zelda tried to kick him, push him off somehow, but it was quickly becoming clear she lacked the strength. She was just wasting energy.
If she could only move her hands, she could blind him again, and finish him off with her knife. Why hadn’t she done that back then? She was such a coward…!
His eyes were too close. The princess quickly turned her face to the side, she couldn’t stand looking at him.
“I d… don’t..” she gasped. What was he talking about? That’s what she wanted to ask! “Where am I..!?“
How long had she been out for? Where had he taken her? Not knowing terrified her.
{▼}―
Her answer made him growl, the sound deep and inhuman as it resounded in his chest. She didn’t what?! And rather than responding to him properly, she asked a question in turn, fully expecting him to respond. Expecting him to just serve as he had done before, was it?
Link wanted to strangle her. Wanted to break her bones, snap her body like a twig. Make her feel his wrath. He truly wanted to, but why was the mere thought making his head spin and his stomach twist? Why would his body not obey him when he thought of moving his hands from her wrists to her throat instead?
Why did his chest hurt so much?
They were friends. She deserved no mercy. It was his duty, his reason to exist, to protect her. Without legs she wouldn’t get in trouble anymore. Why did she treat him like a monster? Why was she crying and trembling so much before him? Perhaps he should give her a proper reason to?
Another growl, turning into a whimper as it took on a pained note now. He felt like he was being torn apart from within, the sensation different from her light magic before. It wasn’t her. She wasn’t doing anything right now aside from shivering and whimpering. The goddesses then? Were they trying to terminate him the moment he decided to no longer be their play ball? He would teach them eventually, too. Was he being abandoned again?
❝Hngh-❞
Finally he willed himself to pry his hands off her, shaking fingers inching towards her face as his red eyes were locked onto her tears. He didn’t want to see her cry. He didn’t want to make her cry.
Stop.
In a sudden movement, the hero jerked away from the Princess, almost leaping back towards the wall. Link felt like he was going insane. This wasn’t like him.
For now, he would contact his master ally. His enemy friend. The one who had sent him to find Zelda again and return her to the castle. She would be safe there. The thought eased the pain in his ribcage just a little, making the man breathe a little easier now. Yes, all he had to do was to call to Ganondorf.
❝You stay here... You’ll be... safe. I’m here to protect you, Zelda.❞
Like a broken record repeating the words he had said so many times before, Link turned to leave the room again, light momentarily breaking through the open door before it heavily slammed shut behind him again. Leaving her behind in darkness once more.

“Agh!!“
Zelda’s eyes snapped open. She felt something gripping her wrist and pushing her down. It hurt. Her circulation was being cut off. Ice-cold steel was pushing against her skin, making it sting. A blade? She whimpered. Fear was taking hold of her all her senses.
Where was she right now? She couldn’t move! She couldn’t see anything!
Except…
There, in the darkness, two red orbs, the glow illuminating a horrifying visage. The features of her ‘friend’, twisted into a wicked expression.
“N-“ her breathing hitched in her throat. “No!“
How did he find her? She had been careful! She had done everything she could to hide her tracks. Hadn’t it been enough?
She screamed and trashed around wildly, she had to get away. This was too frightening to comprehend. This wasn’t real. This was just another nightmare. Something like this could not be happening!
{▼}―
His mirthless smile, more of a sneer at this point, only grew at the sight of her terrified face. The trashing was unexpected, however. He had assumed the wise Princess would be smarter than moving around with a blade against her neck, but apparently her rational thinking had been clouded by fear.
Well deserved.
If she was to slice open her own throat on his blade, then Link wasn’t going to stop her. It would be her own fault after all. No blame would fall onto him. May it be up to the goddesses for once to protect their beloved Princess.
Red eyes flickered down to his blade, the creature deciding to watch in wrathful glee as his friend was undoubtedly about to foolishly end herself - only to freeze at the sight of red against black steel. It was not a deep cut - possibly even from before she had started to struggle. Only a small trickle of blood that stained his sword, yet all at once the heat inside Link’s chest was replaced with ice.
He had flung the weapon aside before he even understood what he was doing, the sword hitting the wall before clattering to the ground noisily. Again there was this tightness in his chest, a stabbing pain as the pulsing sensation from earlier returned.
What was she doing to him...?! The smile had long vanished from his face as instead he was now staring at his shaking hand which just moments ago had held his blade, wide-eyed. Why had he let go of it? Was it her doing?
Zelda was still fighting below him, making the creature growl. His now free hand snatched up her other wrist as well, pinning her down even more forcefully than before as he leaned down. Eyes narrowed, teeth bared in a snarl, Link only came to a halt when his face was mere inches from hers.
❝What did you DO to me...?!❞
queenofhyrulecastle
Run. Just keeping running. Don’t stop. Get away from here.
She made her way through the forest, holding her arms up to push away bushes and twigs in front of her.
The normal road was out of the question. It might be faster, but she would leave clear footprints, especially in this weather. This path was slower, and more challenging to traverse, but the vegetation obscured the ground. Going this way was safer.
This had all happened because she had entered that building. She was sure of it. In the future she had to avoid all man-made roads and structures. Next time it rained, she wouldn’t care. A little rain wouldn’t hurt. It wasn’t worth it.
Don’t take any more chances.
How long time had passed? How far had she gone? It was still dark. Eventually, she had stumbled over a root and collapsed to the ground.
Zelda tried to push herself up, but her arms wouldn’t budge. It was odd. The cold earth felt almost soothing. The bushes grew thick here and were almost making a little canopy over her. It felt comforting to not be out in the open.
She could rest for a while, right? Just a few minutes. As soon as her chest stopped burning, and her breathing returned to normal, then she’ll keep going…
Just.. a little…
{▼}―
With every step he took, it became easier, the creature getting increasingly faster as his pain lessened. Yes, his agony might have been fading, but Link’s anger certainly didn’t. The clearer his head became, the more his rage grew, the heat in his chest never leaving - but now for a different reason.
Like a bloodhound he followed the trail of her aura that called out to him. Almost like a scent, sweet and alluring, only making him dash through the woods even faster. Leaping over shrubs and undergrowth like it was nothing, his red eyes just staring straight ahead into the nothingness of the fog. Waiting for her form to appear through it, even though he could tell she was still farther away.
It was impressive, truly, how far she had been able to run. Or perhaps he had been out of commission for longer than he had thought. But he was getting closer fast, her presence no longer moving. Did she maybe think she was safe from him? That she finished him off? Or perhaps she was arrogant enough to believe that he wouldn’t pursue her anymore?
Oh no, he was f a r from done with her.
When he reached her at last, the Princess was a pathetic sight; laying on the soaked ground, rain dripping down onto her and dirt staining her dress. Unconscious as far as he could tell. Or perhaps asleep. Unaware. Unprotected.
Link slowed down as soon as he saw her, his sprint instead becoming a casual gait as he approached the collapsed form of Zelda. His fingers twitching as red eyes scanned her form, pausing momentarily on her weak spots before continuing to wander.
He could kill her with ease right now. Snap her neck. Choke the life from her. Impale her on his blade. Oh how he wanted to. But she didn’t deserve an easy way out. Throughout his journey he had not been allowed to die either - so why should she?
Crouching down next to her, the former hero reached out, delicately brushing a strand of wet hair from her face, his fingers barely ghosting over her skin. Regarding her - his liege. His friend. Perhaps he should break her legs... ensuring that she would no longer be able to run from him. For her protection of course. That was what she had summoned him for seven years ago, after all; to be her protector.
His fingers continued to trail along her body, only coming to a halt atop of her calf. He could feel how fragile her bones below his touch were compared to his. How easily he could snap them, take her ability to walk permanently.
Several seconds passed by, both of them unmoving, almost frozen in time as the rain continued to drop down onto both of them. Then Link finally withdrew his hand from her leg, instead pushing his arm below her body. Turning her to lay on her back, before scooping her into his arms. She must have been truly exhausted, the Princess not even stirring as he moved her around.
He couldn’t tell why, but the desire to break her had vanished. He would get his payback eventually - so why rush it. First he would bring her back to the house she had just fled from. He vaguely remembered there to be a basement. Once there, he would see how things would proceed.
The trek back to the ruin seemed shorter than the hunt for her, even though it probably took longer. Now that the entrance was no longer blocked, he simply pushed the rotten doors open and stepped back into the dark, moldy interior. As he had correctly seen, there was a stairway leading down, a simple door at the end of it marking the entrance to a basement.
Down there it was completely dark, yet the creature didn’t need light to see. A quick scan of the room told him that it was completely cut off from the surface aside from the single entrance he had just stepped through. Good.
With a creak, the heavy wooden door swung shut behind him. And as soon as he was engulfed in darkness, his anger flared to life again. There was no escape down here. Nothing for her to use as a weapon. No light aside from what little crept through the cracks below the door.
He almost threw her to the ground, the only thing to cushion her fall being the moldering remains of a carpet. With a vicious hiss his blade slid from its sheath as he drew his sword, following after her in a flash. One hand grabbing one of her wrists and roughly pinning her down, the sharp edge of his weapon pressed against her delicate neck before she even fully regained awareness of the situation.
❝Don’t move. I am a little bit irritated with you, Zelda. Don’t make it worse.❞

The boards slammed down into the floor with a crash, followed by a cloud of disturbed dust.
The room on the first floor had most likely been a break room for the guards. Bits of shattered ceramics littered the floor and there was some chairs lying about. A table that had seen better days was lying in the right corner. And the left.
Zelda hesitantly looked up towards the ceiling, white as a sheet. She hadn’t expect him to scream like that. Her chest felt like it was filled with thousands of glass shards. It was hard to breathe. She couldn’t stand this. She didn’t want to hurt him. She didn’t want to hear him make such an anguished sound.
Not again.
The princess shock her head furiously, telling herself to calm down. It’s all just a deception. Even if he looked like Link and sounded just like him, he was a monster. If anything, that reaction had made that even more clear.
In that moment, she hadn’t used an offensive attack, he had reacted to the light itself. A normal person would only be blinded, the fact he was in such pain was proof of his demonic nature.
Forcing herself to stand up again, Zelda ran towards the door and shoved aside the trap she had put up. It hadn’t been disturbed at all. Had he known about it and found another way in? He couldn’t have been hiding inside all along could he? She was sure she had checked every room thoroughly. The thought disturbed her.
Outside, the rain had relented slightly and a thick fog had formed, rising up quietly from the ground and enveloping the trees like a ghostly lake. Visibility was low. To her great relief, the situation was rapidly starting to turn in her favour. Everything had seemed so hopeless just a few moments ago.
Her legs were heavy with fatigue, and the cold was causing her whole body to shiver, but she didn’t care right now. Zelda ran as fast as she could, disappearing into the mist and foliage.
{▼}―
He could sense her as she left, her presence getting fainter and fainter. Why couldn’t he move? Just what kind of curse had she used on him? He could still feel her magic crawling through his veins, poisoning his body. Taking root in his chest, agony pulsing through his every fiber.
Was he dying? Was this, what death felt like? The pain was excruciating, making it hard to breathe. Making it hard to think. Spikes in his head, liquid heat dripping down his throat. His eyes burned and Link was forced to close them, a soft groan falling from his lips. No. He refused. He refused to die.
Gritting his teeth, he forced his body to move, feeling as though every small movement was tearing his body apart. He usually didn’t feel pain at all. Or at the least not like this. Just what had the Princess done to him?! His head and body felt hot, as if something was boiling him alive. But, slowly, his vision was starting to return to him. Blurred, dark spots still dancing before his eyes, but he could see. And the more he forced himself to move, the easier it became.
Zelda had already gotten quite far, her aura but a mere tingle on the edges of his consciousness, but he could still feel her. As soon as he regained control over his body, he would go find her again. He would make her pay.
Back on his feet, using the wall for support, the man took a moment to wait for his sense of balance to return to him. Trying to ignore the strange pulsing in his chest or how tight it felt all of a sudden. If the Princess had thought, that this would stop him from hunting her down, then she was wrong.
It was hard to tell how long it took him to exit the building, his sense of time skewed thanks to the pounding headache the effects of her spell had caused. But, thankfully, it was beginning to lessen again, fading into the background. His limbs were no longer as stiff as before, the pain more bearable.
Red eyes scanning the surrounding, Link’s snarl turned into a mirthless sneer at the sight of the fog which had formed. It would make it far easier for him to approach the Princess without her taking notice of his presence. He was not going to give her another chance to attack him.
With a last deep breath he stepped out into the woods again, the leaves under his boots only giving the faintest of rustles as he soon vanished in the haze, following after the Princess.

Navi smiled a bit at his answer. How many moments had they had just like this one? Navi had been raised to be a living encyclopedia; whenever Link had questions, she had done her best to explain them. They’d discussed everything from the monsters of Hyrule to the makeup of the different towns and cities; they’d even breached the topic of human biology once or twice.
“You’re right–but there’s more to it than that.”
She sighed and looked at the ceiling, trying to think of the best way to explain things.
“Most forest fairies…aren’t really fairies at all.” She said finally, figeting with her fingers as she spoke. “They’re part of the Kokiri, quite literally. The Kokiri are immortal, you see, and their form can change depending on what best fits their environment. For this day and age, the form of a child and a companion was best. The Great Deku Tree is the one who created their spirits; that means he can manipulate them as well, put them in two separate vessels.”
She paused, giving Link time to absorb what she’d said. “You didn’t have that. But, knowing you’d also need a guide, the Great Deku Tree created me. Is…this all making sense so far?”
{ △ }―
Not fairies? That was news to the hero, blue eyes wide in surprise as he listened to Navi’s explanation. But... in a way, it made sense. The fairies that accompanied the Kokiri had always acted a little different than their wild kin - something which Link assumed had to do with the fact, that they lived in the village. But, to think that they were actually part of the Kokiris’ souls...?
No wonder he had never had a fairy until Navi came to him, then. Back then he had wondered if it was because he was unliked, but his friend’s reasoning made sense. He, as a Hylian, obviously wouldn’t have his soul... split that way then.
❝I... think so, yes...❞, Link replied slowly, eyebrows furrowed together. There were many new questions that he wanted to ask, but he would patiently continue to listen for now and see, if they would get answered along the way.
So far he could understand why he hadn’t grown up with a fairy companion, and where Navi had come from back then... but, why did she leave...?
Friends don't put friends in bottles, Dark.
❝Of course they do, if it means keeping their friends safe. Who are you to judge?❞
He was smiling, but there was a noticable edge to his voice - a warning.
❝It’s for her own good. Don’t get involved in my business.❞

Navi sucked in a deep, painful breath as soon as the shade released her. Her whole body ached from being crushed, but at least now, she was free– that was, mostly. It would be a bit before she was ready to fly again.
Still, flying would be what Navi needed to do. She couldn’t look Dark in the eyes; if she did, he would be able to see the fear in her own (though, perhaps the trembling of her wings already gave her away). She needed a way out; a way to excuse herself from this conversation in a way that wouldn’t incur more of his fury.
And then he asked if she’d go with him, and her blood ran cold. She couldn’t–she wouldn’t–but turning him down felt dangerous. Navi considered her words very carefully, standing shakily as she did so.
“U-uh, our adventure’s over, though.” She stammered, lifting off of his hand and into the air (oh, how her wings hurt!) “We saved Hyrule, didn’t we? Th-that’s what we set out to do. O-obviously I still want to see you, but I have other things I need to attend to now…a fairy’s work is never done…!” She started hovering away, still facing him, hoping he didn’t notice the distance she was putting between them.
“Feel free to visit any time, but I need to stay here, in the forest–so–bye!” She flipped around again, intent on speeding off–though, her damaged wings meant she moved slower than she’d like.
{▼}―
He watched as she left his palm, fluttering in front of his face. Listening as she spoke, head gently tilted to a side. So she believed that they really had finished their quest, did she? He shouldn’t be surprised about that. After all, weren’t fairies close to the gods? Of course she would believe them. Take their side. She hadn’t been sent to him as a companion, but rather for the sake of surveillance, wasn’t that right?
Link could see how she was putting distance between them, red eyes following each of her movements closely. If the goddesses had sent her to watch him, then he was going to make sure to give them something to watch. Not to mention that Navi was his friend. She would see the truth eventually. It was as much his duty to help her, as it was hers to help him. It would just take some time. But he could be patient. He would show her.
When she tried to escape, he was prepared. It hurt to see how desperate she was to leave him. How little he meant to her - when she was the world to her. Had he not sacrificed everything to protect her and everyone else? Was that not what he had been chosen to do? Even if they were not worthy of his help, he intended to fulfill his duty. It was for her own safety - so, for once, it would be Navi’s turn to make some sacrifices.
In the blink of an eye he had already grabbed her again, fingers mercilessly closing around her already bruised body. The flying was a problem - should he break her wings? But fairies had healing magic, didn’t they? Then what if he tore them out? Would they still grow back?
Perhaps that was a bit harsh. Despite everything, she had been with him on this quest far longer than anyone else, no? Everyone had already left him... used him. She may have done the same, but at the very least she had stayed by his side - until now at the very least. He wasn’t going to let her leave, yes... but for now he would keep her with him without hurting her.
At least not beyond reason.
❝Our adventure is not over. I won’t let you leave me, Navi. Not like this.❞
Reaching down to the pouch attached to his belt, he rummaged through it for a bit before finding what he was looking for. Pulling a bottle from it, never letting go of his companion, he uncorked it swiftly. Pouring out the murky black liquid that it had contained until now, the hero gave it a few last shakes to ensure it would be clean enough, before unceremoniously shoving the fairy through the opening, closing it up again.
❝You don’t have to worry. Even if you betrayed me, I will protect you. You’ll understand soon enough.❞

Zelda was rapidly losing the little composure she had left. This wasn’t working at all. There was nothing she could say or do to discourage or change his mind.
There was no sense in trying to reason with something that wasn’t capable of real thoughts or feelings.
She didn’t have many options, and the majority of them would only end in failure. The most sensible thing to do right now was to run.
But traversing this worn down building, riddled with rubble and rotting floorboards, in the dark, was easier said than done. To make it worse, seeing how he got inside without making a single sound, these things would only be disadvantageous for her.
The princess glanced past the dark figure, through the broken door, towards the sloppily boarded up window next to the fireplace. She was facing east. If she remembered correctly, the room right bellow them was adjacent to the hallway leading to the main entrance. Good.
She quietly prayed to the goddesses that her strength would last.
Zelda raised her hand towards the entity, and in an instant the room was illuminated by a blinding light. At the same time, the floor beneath her was pushed down, the brittle wood easily giving in to an invisible force. The floorboards split apart, allowing quick access to the first floor.

There was no time to react. He could see her raising her hand, his smile widening as he assumed she was finally acting sensibly and agreeing to come along. Reaching out with his own hand, he took another step forward, Link assumed she was reaching out for him - only to see, a moment too late, the split second in which her magic blasted from her palm.
Standing right in front of her, there was no way for the man to evade the attack. Blinding, searing light filled the room and his vision went white. He could hear the cracking sound of breaking wood but barely registered it as the light burned his outer layer and blinded his eyes. He howled in pain, stumbling backwards as he brought up his arms in a delayed reaction.
It hurt. It hurt so bad. He hadn’t expected her to attack him with magic. He hadn’t expected her to be this open about her hostility. Against her own hero. The very same man she had sent out on this quest. Even after the light faded, Link could still feel the magic crawling across his skin and seeping into his muscles, paralysing him. His vision still was white. Or was it black? It was hard to tell at this point, the pain making it hard to think.
Oh, he was f u r i o u s.
Kneeling on the floor - when had he fallen down? He hadn’t even realised - the hero was panting heavily, throat feeling raw as the pain slowly ebbed enough for his mind and senses to clear again. Blinking, he tried to regain his vision, but to no effect; all he could see was fog and the shape of her spell, burned into his retina.
But he could still hear. Lips, once smiling, had now pulled into a snarl. He could still hear the creaking and snapping of wood from below. Had the floor given in under her? She could have injured herself. She could be trapped, unable to run. He could still feel her, sense her aura and divine magic radiating from below. He just needed to move, chase after her. But his body did not obey him, shaking as it tried to recover from the blast he had just taken.
She was going to get away again.

Navi watched Link’s movements anxiously–but thank the goddesses, he liked it. She smiled back at him and nodded. “I-Yeah, I tried to keep it nice, in case…well, in case you ever came back.” In case this ever happened. She looked away, blushing a bit. “I-It seems kind of silly, now that I think about it.”
For a while, she simply sat and stared, appreciating the fact that they were here. The last time she’d been in this house with him…She couldn’t even properly remember. It had been years. But now here they were, just like old times.
But she couldn’t reminisce forever; they had many more serious things to discuss. “I…I promised I’d tell you what happened… so here goes.” She sat heavily on the bed, fidgeting with her fingers, unable to meet his gaze.
“Link, as you know, you were raised here…but you aren’t one of the Kokiri. You’re Hylian, and that’s why you didn’t have a fairy when you were young. The Great Deku Tree could sense your destiny; that’s why he created me, to help and guide you.”
This was all familiar to him, she knew; at least, most of it. She couldn’t recall if she’d ever told him that she was created specifically for him, or if she’d ever admitted that she was younger than he was. “Do you…do you know how the bond between the Kokiri and their fairy works?”

Not knowing where else to to sit, feeling oddly self-conscious about sitting on the bed next to her, the hero instead opted to just sit down onto the ground, legs tucked in underneath him as he began to listen to her.
Of course he had known that he wasn’t a Kokiri... the news had hit him hard when the Great Deku Tree revealed them to him the first time. It explained many things, of course but... it still had hurt. Feeling as if he had lost his family and home, only to also lose his father figure mere moments later.
At her question, Link hesitated. He, truthfully, had never known exactly what the link between the Kokiri and their fairies was. He had observed the others of course and asked Saria about it as well, lamenting why he hadn’t been given a fairy companion. But his sage friend had always been denying too much information to him. Gently, of course, but sternly.
❝They are here to guide the Kokiri and aid them...?❞
More of a question than a confident statement, the young man tilted his head lightly to a side as he shot his old companion an insecure glance. He knew the fairies were made to protect the Kokiri in the absence of adults, but was there more to it?

Navi let out a yelp as she was snatched out of the air. How had he–?! She thought she was faster than that. But then, perhaps her familiarity with who she thought he was had caused her to hesitate.
She had a hard time focusing on his words on account of the crushing pressure that was causing her to nearly black out. She whimpered, cried out in pain, pushed on his fingers in a futile effort to relieve his grip as he held her tighter and tighter, crumpling her wings and threatening to snap her bones.
One thing did become clear to her– he thought he was Link. Could that be right? Surely he was mocking her. But–no, his anger felt genuine.
Navi sucked in a deep, relieved breath as he released her–at least enough for her to breathe. She looked up at the being holding her captive, her eyes wide and fearful. Would it be best to go along with his delusion? Perhaps that would give her the best chance of escape.
“L-Link–” She gasped, still pushing on his fingers. Din, it felt strange to call him that. “I didn’t abandon you. Do-do you not remember? We left the temple together. We defeated Ganondorf and saved Hyrule. A-and-and then you disappeared. Please, don’t be angry with me…Link, you’re hurting me…”
{▼}―
Link froze at her words, expression not turning into one of mild surprise. He had defeated Ganondorf? When had that been...? No matter how hard he tried to remember, there were no memories beyond the fight against his copy. He had disappeared after the fight?
Was this part of his grand destiny as well? After doing their work for them, had the goddesses attempted to get rid of him? Destroying evidence of their own inadequacy? Well, whatever they had been trying to do, it clearly hadn’t worked as well as they had hoped. He had returned and now realised that his quest was not over just yet. Even if Ganondorf was gone, there was another pest out there endangering Hyrule and his friends. Or rather, there were three of them.
At once his smile returned to his face, a cruel mimicry of her Link’s sweet smile. Red eyes turning to look down at her struggling form, he tilted his head to the side now.
❝Of course. I’m not angry at you now, Navi. Here, let me stop hurting you.❞
Releasing the fairy, he instead cupped her in his hand almost gently. A comforting gesture, if not for the unnerving emptiness in his eyes and the coldness of his touch.
❝I am sorry for leaving you alone. But I’m back now, don’t worry... we can continue our adventure together again. You’ll come with me, won’t you?❞
