my portrayal of mel is based off of the rumor that she is marvel's melissa gold (songbird). for anyone familiar with melissa, we know that her original background doesn’t exactly line up with what we’ve seen in thunderb0lts. that said, i actually like the direction they’ve taken with her in the film and even though it’s not an exact adaptation of her story, the setup has a lot of potential.

◉ in the comics, melissa runs away from home to escape her abusive father and in hopes of reconnecting with her mother, who she believes was wrongfully imprisoned for stealing. my version of melissa leaves home after graduating high school instead. she makes it to new york to attend college and that's where she earns a degree in international relations with a minor in sociology. but life after graduation isn't easy. despite her academic achievements, mel struggles to find stable work in her field. dealing with student debt and lacking a support system, she eventually finds herself unhoused, living out of shelters and scraping by however she can.

⊙ everything changes when she crosses paths with valentina who sees potential in her. she offers her a job as her assistant which not only gives mel a way back on her feet, but also gives her valuable experience in a space she originally wanted to be apart of. mel never had a stable parental figure, so valentina becomes the mother mel always wished she had. she saved mel from her struggles and gave her a chance to succeed. because of this, mel feels a strong loyalty to her, despite not always agreeing with her morals and actions.

◉ obviously, it’s unclear which direction they’ll take mel in the future, but if their plan is to make her the new songbird, i can see her agreeing to be experimented on? originally, she had her vocal cords technologically enhanced by roxxon technicians, but it could be the o.x.e. group operated by valentina instead.

⊙ i have a feeling that the new avengers will eventually break free from valentina's grasp, and valentina might then turn to mel, using her as part of a new team. this scenario would be similar to one of her storylines in the comics, where melissa joins zemo's masters of evil, posing as a hero in a group of imposters known as the thunderbolts. mel starts out believing she's on the side of good, but over time, she begins to see valentina's true motives. eventually, mel will have a change of heart and break away from valentina for good.

jaime had been texting brenda since he'd boarded his first plane back home from gotham, though what had started as excited plans to hang out after dinner had turned into a request for a listening ear after the bombshells that his family had dropped less than an hour before. as soon as they'd found a place to sit (the old park down the street from his house was hit by the construction wave, too - that one stung), he'd started going off, rambling faster than he could make sense of.

❝ what do you mean, 'we?' you knew? ❞ hands released the curls on his head as he glanced back over to her. brenda kept talking before jaime could get his thought out, though the hurt was plastered right on his face. he'd texted her non-stop, had facetime hangouts almost every week... how long had she known about the auto shop? about his dad? ❝ we don't know that. i could've worked at the shop full-time, or helped dad look over the budget again, found a cheaper parts vendor, something! ❞

jaime stopped himself, trying to take a slow breath before brenda's comment about classes made him scoff it right back out. ❝ yeah, now we're in triple-debt and i'm stuck. not a lot of listings for a pre-lawyer out there. why didn't you tell me? ❞

brenda rocked slowly on the swing, one of the few pieces left untouched by the gentrification of one of their old hang out spots. she's laughing to make herself feel better. the girl had kept so much from him while he was gone, and now that he was here, it was harder than she thought to pretend nothing had changed. she called herself his best friend, but everything she’d done lately felt like the opposite of what a real best friend would do. but as much as she felt loyal to jaime, her loyalty to his parents and younger sister ran just as deep. they were her family too. sure, she had her tía, amparo, but they'd never shared the same kind of closeness. not the kind she had with the reyes family.

the girl had been looking at him, but the second she catches the hint of hurt in his eyes, she quickly tore her gaze away. "not until after it all went down. they were afraid i'd tell you if i knew the second it all happened," she admits honestly. "but yes, i've known for awhile now. a few weeks, give or take." brenda listens as he lists off the millions of possibilities of what he could've done to help, but she shakes her head. "you weren’t supposed to have to do anything, jaime! you’re their son. i mean, would you have expected milagro to do those things if she were in your position?"

by now, she’s stopped swaying on the swing set. instead, one hand grips the cold metal tightly while the other reaches out to take his hand. "there's not a lot of listings for a pre-lawyer out there yet. they aren't going to show up the second you graduate, jaime." she says softly, looking at him directly. "i wanted to tell you… but your dad losing the shop and having that heart attack— it was a lot to take in. i didn’t want to overwhelm you while you were still in school. especially because you were so close. i know you would've given it all up to be here, but you deserved to see it through to the end."

"you're already trying to fix a problem you can't solve, jaime." the summer before his last year, kord Industries slipped in under everyone's radar, snapping up property all over el paso including his father's garage. "what matters to them is that you finished school, nothing else."

"yeah, i miss it. who wouldn't?" fighting crime with the other was some of the best times of his life, but he had his family to take care of now and his loyalty lied now with his step daughter. "still, the day's going to come when courtney wants the cosmic staff back. what then? are you going to be ready to hand it back over, syl?"
