"What if I help you?" Grace blurts out desperately, sweating even in the coolness of his house as his words finally manage to stop Adrian from storming out.
"What?" Adrian says after a tense moment.
"I can prove it to everyone," Grace says, his heart in his throat. "I'll - I'll make you and Rocky the most celebrated couple on Erid. I promise."
"Stupid human," Adrian hisses. "You would give up your chance for him just like that?"
"Yes," Grace says hoarsely.
"Anything for him."
---
Adrian does not like Grace.
Which sucks, really, since Grace loves Adrian's husband and all.
STORY: START!
Grace is pacing.Â
He's been pacing for the past twenty minutes, actually, and has bitten at his thumb so much that the end of his nail is now soggy and gross. It's a habit he hasn't kicked even on an entirely different planet.Â
âThis doesn't make any sense,â Grace mutters to himself, scrubbing at his face, glasses be damned. His heart is racing in ways that are slightly concerning in his chest, and he runs his fingers through his hair, probably making it look even messier than usual. âI mean, why - why would - I'm not some kind of, of - I'm not a homewrecker, what the actual fudge!â
âRocky has assured Adrian many times that Grace has no romantic feelings or intentions towards Rocky, but Adrian is, by default, a logical being,â Rocky says from where he continues to lie on top of Grace's bed.Â
Grace inhales sharply and hopes Rocky doesn't catch it, though he probably does. The only reason he doesn't point it out is because Grace had beat it into his metaphorical head that sometimes humans don't like every reaction they have being pointed out, and for that, he's grateful, because he doesn't want to be put under the microscope for what that noise means.Â
âRight,â Grace says after an awkward beat. âYeah, that's - yeah. I don't have any - um. If you told Adrian that and he's a logical person, then why would he refuse to believe you? Aren't all the facts laid out to him literally right flipping there?âÂ
âThere are contradictions that suggest otherwise,â Rocky says begrudgingly. Heâs doing that thing where heâs picking at Graceâs blanket and pulling on the loose thread that Grace has been reluctant to cut, since he loves seeing Rocky tug on it when heâs bored. This time, though, itâs obvious heâs doing it since heâs anxious, and Grace is about to also pull on the thread. But, like, his hair. Or life support. âI do not like to be apart from you for more than necessary - âÂ
âWe were stuck in that tiny ship for almost six years, of course we think itâs weird to separate - â Grace immediately says, unable to stop himself from defending their admittedly clingy behavior.Â
âAdrian also believes Rocky is more human than Eridian by this point - âÂ
âWhat? Did he miss the fact that you have five limbs and no face?âÂ
âIt has been almost three quarters of a century,â Rocky says, and thereâs a bass to his voice that normally isnât there, and itâs enough to fully shut Grace up, who stares. Rockyâs vents flutter slightly as he struggles to speak, and finally, he lets out a cacophony of out of tune notes in a groan. âTime apart has changed us in ways that I do not think either of us anticipated.âÂ
Grace sniffles.Â
âWhy are you leaking, my Grace?â Rocky says, though there is a slight tinge of amusement in his voice as Grace settles back down on the bed, sitting on the edge and taking the tissue that Rocky passes towards him. âIn addition to water, you are always filled with so many emotions. Itâs funny.âÂ
âShut up,â Grace mumbles, blowing into the tissue and feeling like a wreck as he continues to be unable to breathe. There are so many confusing emotions swirling through him, and all of them can be contributed to the being right beside him, who reaches out and starts to rub circles into Graceâs back, just like how he likes it.Â
Thereâs confusion, of course.Â
He canât fathom that Adrian would ever be, what - jealous of someone like him. Heâs not exactly the catch of the year, an understatement even back on Earth, when heâd always been the last one picked for basketball and also never attended any school dance because he figured no one would want to go with him.Â
And now, here on Erid, itâs not as if heâs considered attractive or anything. Rocky might be used to him now, but the various doctors and politicians heâs met has always kept a bit of a wide berth from him, eternally slightly grossed out by how wet and leaky he is all the time.Â
So⊠yeah. Definitely no chance that Rocky finds him attractive, which is - awesome. Great.Â
Anyway, aside from the confusion, Grace is just plain stressed.Â
He canât handle the idea that he might be accidentally wrecking his best friendâs marriage, which, frankly, makes him want to kill himself out of sheer and utter embarrassment.Â
Thereâs no circumstance where Grace would ever consider stepping into territory he doesnât belong. As much as he and Rocky are - what they are, thatâs nothing compared to a marriage thatâs almost 200 years long. What is Grace in the grand scheme of things compared to Eridians, anyway?Â
Heâs got maybe 50 years left. Thatâs being generous, and his health seriously took a hit during that last year stretch on the journey to Erid, and from what Rockyâs told him, an Eridian isnât even considered a teenager at 50.Â
Rocky deserves so much more than whatever Adrian might be thinking.Â
If Grace has learned anything during his time on Earth, especially from those months spent with Stratt, itâs that love simply isnât enough.Â
Not really.Â
Love hadnât been enough to change Graceâs mind about boarding the Mary, and it hadnât been enough to make him turn around and go home. He loves Earth, of course he does, because at the end of it all, he did all that crazy crap just for the chance to save his people, but that had been nothing compared to the all-consuming fear he felt when he realized Rocky was in danger.Â
Grace steadies himself with a breath.Â
âRocky,â he says, wiping away the last of his tears and sniffling one more time. âYou should go home.âÂ
Rocky freezes.Â
âWhy?â Rocky says tersely after a tense second. He stops rubbing Graceâs back and skitters back on the bed, pressing his back up against the corner where the walls meet, and thereâs no mistaking the accusatory nature of his voice. âDo you not want me here?âÂ
âI always want you here,â Grace says helplessly, reaching out and gathering Rocky into a hug, which he only begrudgingly allows with a small grumble. âYou know that, bud. But maybe Adrianâs right. I mean, heâs your husband, you canât just leave him hanging.âÂ
âBut - âÂ
âItâs been three quarters of a century, I know,â Grace says, nuzzling his face into the top of Rockyâs carapace. Rocky reluctantly purrs in response, two of his arms reaching up to pat Graceâs hair and run claws through the strands carefully. âAnd yes, youâre right, thatâs a long time to be apart. But he waited for you all this time, Rock. He loves you.âÂ
âIt is not just time that has changed me,â Rocky says quietly against his chest. One of his claws are tapping gently at Graceâs collarbone, a familiar rhythm that brings him both a great sense of relief and also anxiety over memories of when Rocky hadnât been awake to tap back. âIt is you, Grace. You changed me.âÂ
Grace is stunned.Â
âOh,â he manages to say. âOh, Rock.âÂ
âPlease do not make Rocky leave,â Rocky says, his voice unusually emotional as he butts his vents to Graceâs chin, the touch gentle and so warm that it automatically makes Grace feel a bit dizzy. âYou need someone to watch you sleep. I have to make sure you wake up.âÂ
âGoodness,â Grace says, patting one of Rockyâs legs and getting a small flick to the wrist for his trouble. âWell, considering youâre several hundred pounds heavier than I am, itâs not like I can make you move.âÂ
Rocky chirped in confirmation.Â
âIn that case,â Grace says slowly, an idea starting to form in his head. âWhy donât you ask Adrian to come here? You built an exosuit for him too, right? You should invite him. Spend some time together in the living room or something, I can stay here and maybe read while you guys have a, uh, date night.âÂ
Rocky is quiet.Â
âAre you sure?â He finally says. Itâs clear that while he thinks the idea has merit, heâs hesitating for some reason, and itâs not hard to guess why.Â
If Adrian really thinks Grace is some kind of homewrecker, then the chance that he doesnât like Grace is insurmountable. That doesnât exactly make for a good first impression, and frankly, Grace feels like choking himself over even the thought of being so heavily disliked, but itâs not like thereâs any other option.Â
Grace will save Rockyâs marriage, no matter what Rocky or Adrian say.Â
âOf course I am,â Grace says, managing to smile despite his reservations.Â
"What if I help you?" Grace blurts out desperately, sweating even in the coolness of his house as his words finally manage to stop Adrian from storming out.
"What?" Adrian says after a tense moment.
"I can prove it to everyone," Grace says, his heart in his throat. "I'll - I'll make you and Rocky the most celebrated couple on Erid. I promise."
"Stupid human," Adrian hisses. "You would give up your chance for him just like that?"
"Yes," Grace says hoarsely.
"Anything for him."

Adrian does not like Grace.
Which sucks, really, since Grace loves Adrian's husband and all.
STORY: START!
It takes about seven months for Grace to stop slowly dying while on Erid, and those seven months are spent puking, sleeping, speedreading a bunch of medical text, and becoming somewhat of a doctor (the MD kind) to help push the Eridian scientists in the right direction.Â
It's a lot of work and he almost chews his own leg off from how frustrated he is over certain aspects of his own biology, but then the osteoporosis is gone and so is the jaundice, and he's right as rain when he's moved into his biosphere and promptly told to enjoy the rest of his life being a bum, because that's what the savior of Erid deserves, silly.Â
During those months of recovery and feeling like he's back in college again, Grace can admit he's a bit lacking in social cues. Not that he was the best at it even back on Earth, but when he was actively suffering from scurvy and passing out from the severe anemia every other day, he wasn't exactly observing the behaviors of everyone around him.Â
In fact, the only person he can truly and desperately focus on is Rocky, who is, heh, his rock.Â
Lame joke, but whatever.Â
Rocky is as annoying, bullheaded, stubborn, and kind as ever. He honks like a freaking train any time the doctors check up on Grace, fully convinced that they're going to kill him somehow, even though they're also furiously pouring themselves over medical text alongside him and test things multiple times before even trying to give him something.Â
Rocky likes to fuss over Grace, patting him anxiously with his claws whenever Grace has to puke up another slurry, and has even taken up on a bad habit of screeching at the top of his metaphorical lungs whenever he feels like Eridian politicians should leave Grace alone.Â
It's sweet.Â
Grace clings to him like some sort of pathetic little pet, and it isn't until the second week of Rocky trying to scramble into bed with him in Grace's new house and knead his back that it occurs to him.Â
âRock,â Grace says, trying not to flush too much when the warm xenonite of Rocky's flexible exosuit reaches out and rucks up his shirt, revealing just enough skin for Rocky to start massaging his spine.Â
âWhat is it, Grace?â Rocky says, sounding distracted as he rubs gently at Grace so that he doesn't accidentally get bruised. âWhatever you need, Rocky will get. Statement.âÂ
âUh, right,â Grace says, feeling a bit stupid when Rocky's claws skitter down a bit more and nearly brushes the hem of his pants. âI just - look, you know how much I appreciate you. Seriously. You're, like, the light of my life and everything.âÂ
Rocky makes a noise akin to a purr, and it nearly makes Grace's brain turn to mush as he says, âRocky expects to be considered nothing less. I will never let you be alone again.âÂ
âYeah, bud,â Grace says hoarsely, sniffling lightly and blindly swatting behind him when Rocky giggles at his âleakinessâ. âBut I just wanted to ask about Adrian.â
Rocky's claw pauses only for a microsecond before assuming its work.Â
Grace feels it, though, and he can further feel the hesitation in Rocky's beautiful voice as he says, âis there something Grace wants to know about Adrian, question?âÂ
âYeah. Where is he?â Grace asks, tucking his chin into his folded arms and gauging how spooked Rocky is based on his nervous chittering. Hmm. Something's definitely up, and Grace has no intention of letting it go, especially since he can literally feel Rocky moving anxiously above him. âI haven't seen a single hair of him since I got here. I thought you wanted us to meet.âÂ
âAdrian does not have hair,â Rocky says avoidantly.Â
This gets Grace to lift his upper body up on his arms and twist his waist to shoot Rocky an incredulous look. It's not like Rocky has eyes to perceive it, but they've been around each for so much and so long that he's tuned in to every one of Grace's microexpressions, which is why Grace knows that Rocky knows that Grace isn't going to stop.Â
âYou and I both know I don't mean that literally,â Grace says, trying in vain to sit up properly but unable to with the way Rocky stubbornly stays on his butt. âWe've watched too much Grey's Anatomy for you to dance around my metaphors. What's going on with you? Why're you being so shifty?âÂ
âRocky is a sturdy and unmovable object. The only shifty thing here is your pathetic excuse for a spine,â Rocky says firmly, digging in one of his knuckles and making a clicking sound of disapproval when Grace yelps. âSee? You are still experiencing pain. Your tiny fractures haven't healed completely.âÂ
âIt only hurts because you dug the equivalent of a dang river stone into my nerves, you prick.â Grace grits out, and after squirming a bit more, Rocky relents and lifts himself up on his limbs just enough so Grace can turn over and look at him fully. âYou remember our rule, right?âÂ
Rocky makes a small humming sound that Grace knows is the equivalent of a sigh.Â
When they were still on the Hail Mary during their journey to Erid, they'd had only a single, nasty fight that had resulted in neither of them speaking to each other for a solid two days. It had been the most painful thing Grace had experienced in a long time, and after apologies had been exchanged, they'd established a rule neither of them could ever break.Â
Never go to bed angry.
It's not meant to be taken literally in the sense that it only applies to fights or anger; after all, neither Grace nor Rocky are particularly aggressive when it comes to each other, so the rule that Grace steals from some cheesy romcom movie is that when they genuinely ask for the truth, the other has to give it.Â
It never fails them, and judging by how Rocky is fidgeting with his thumbs, he's aware he can't get out of this, and so Grace settles comfortably onto the bed, his fingers tapping a quiet rhythm into the xenonite suit while he patiently waits.Â
âWhen we came back home, Rocky told Adrian about everything that happened. How we saved the stars, and also how we saved each other,â Rocky says slowly, sounding reluctant as he fully lowers himself so that his center of gravity is off Grace and thankfully doesn't crush him. âHe understands that you and I⊠that weâŠâÂ
âThat we what?â Grace says, honestly feeling quite lost when Rocky trails off.Â
âThat you and I are tied together,â Rocky says. âThat we have experiences no other can feel.âÂ
Oh.Â
Grace swallows a bit thickly as he processes Rocky's words at a pace he can only describe as snail in molasses.Â
During Grace's first few months on Erid, he'd been seen by countless doctors and scientist, all of whom had been desperately eager to heal him and make sure he thrived. Among the physiological aspects of his health, he'd also talked quite frequently with some of the most renowned psychologists on the planet, and all of them had concluded one thing about him:Â
He has a severe codependency on Rocky, and vice versa. It's to the point that Grace knows Rocky is required to attend therapy if he wants to continue working at his previous engineering company, and some part of Grace knows that what they are to each other isn't the epitome of healthiness.Â
Back on Earth, Grace had done a lot of dismantling in terms of his own ideas of relationships and family and friends once he got burned a few too many times.Â
Part of it was the idea that Grace had to accept he couldn't overly rely on anyone else for his successes or happiness. As cheesy as it sounds, he honestly does believe he's fully capable of functioning without high emotional attachment, even though it sounds unpleasant and it made him pound three bags of vodka after he first woke up on Mary.Â
It's different with Rocky, though.Â
Maybe it's the experience of going through several life and death situations together, or maybe it's because - no, that's definitely it.Â
Grace needs Rocky.Â
He'd abandoned his planet, his home, his fellow humans, all of it, just for even a chance to save the one being he truly thought of as what he'd been missing the entire time he'd been on Earth.Â
Without Rocky, Grace knows he would have died on Mary. He simply would have died.Â
Grace absentmindedly scratches at the scar on his arm.Â
âWait,â Grace says slowly, starting to piece together the underlying guilt and reluctance in Rocky's musical tones. He struggles to say it out loud, but the idea is so ridiculous that he has to, otherwise he'll drive himself insane with it. âSo what're you saying? Adrian understands that we're like Sam and Dean, but there's a but about it?âÂ
âThat's a horrible reference.â Rocky makes a sound similar to an indignant sniff. âBut yes. He knows I cannot live without you and you me.âÂ
Grace shivers minutely at the easy confession.Â
Jesus.Â
It's one thing to think it, but to hear it out loud makes his spine bloom with warmth. He hopes that Rocky won't take notice of how his heart practically skips a beat, and he says, âso then what's the problem?âÂ
Rocky shimmies in place. He kneads at Grace's stomach, ignoring the way the human vaguely complains about feeling like a ball of dough, and Rocky finally says, âwe got into a fight.âÂ
Oh boy.Â
âI'm sorry,â Grace says earnestly, smoothing a hand over Rocky's warm carapace and rubbing a thumb over a particularly soft edge of the suit. âWhat happened? Was it bad?âÂ
âBad, bad, bad,â Rocky chitters. âHe thinks you are here to steal me away. He is distraught that Rocky will leave him for Grace.âÂ

You are diabolical. I fear the only thing you enjoy is being us pain⊠Ok but fr could you give more insight into what Adrian is feeling about all this?
hello!!!
adrian is confused. he has a lot of conflicting emotions and out of all the main 3 hes probably both the most and least stable. hes mad at grace but he also pities him, hes mad at rocky but also wants to make him feel better, and hes mad at himself even though he knows a good portion of his initial anger at the other two was justified.
the point of adrian is to show everyone that emotions are never clearcut or controllable. ive been setting up the dominoes since the beginning by emphasizing how adrian is such a logical and firm being, but even hes fallible to the nonsense of our feelings. there is no easy solution and there is no clear villain because everyone has done something wrong here.
anyway regardless of how lost he is, he can still stick to some of his principles, which is why hes trying to be a bit kinder to grace. he can now discern that grace isnt a malicious being and therefore doesnt deserve all of his scorn. also adrian does genuinely feel bad for grace in this situation, so he'll do some things to help out. hes not at the point where he'll prioritize grace over rocky, but hes definitely much more sympathetic than he was at the very beginning of the fic
