ariana looked towards the other, “i’m sorry?! what did you just say?” she was confused as she raised a brow.
though not often one to speak up , it had been known to happen on rare occasions . his voice was so soft spoken he was actually somewhat surprised she heard it . his hands raise to sign his reply but hesitate . eventually , he opts for signing while following in his quiet , gentle voice . ❝ i’m starting to miss the sky . . . it’s where i’m from . ❞

makar’s been having a grand old time, if he’s honest, standing in the town square and playing his violin. it’s been a bit of a learning curve, trying to play the thing held under his chin, but this new body he’s in means he’s suddenly very tall and he can no longer hold his instrument like a cello anymore. “it is!” he exclaims, holding up a couple of the coins in question, all of which are curiously small. “aren’t they interesting? i wish they came in more colors, though. i miss red and blue and green rupees.”
she studies the circle he holds up . she may be a queen , but with no kingdom it meant so little . she had nothing like the coin he held --- she had nothing at all . by luck , though , something he says catches her attention . mention of the currency she knew . she looks up to meet his face rather than the coins . ❝ you’re from hyrule ? ❞

he marveled at this world which couldn’t make sense . however , while the unfamiliar was a fascination for him , something familiar among it all tore his attention away far quicker . the blond curls were unmistakable . he didn’t even question who it was . from what he heard & what he saw there was no reason to think this was anyone else . ❝ don’t be so quick to say so . doubt looks bad on you , enjolras . ❞ a smile began to etch on his face .

so now this guy is saying his name is link, too? link can’t believe this. all he wanted was to go entertain himself in the cedar grove mall by looking at the winter clothes. now he’s come face-to-face with someone who looked way too much like him and had the same damn sword. if he didn’t know better, he’d say this guy was impersonating him, but—who would do that? he mostly kept to himself around here; surely no one would want to play that kind of prank on him. [ first off, my name is link, and this is also my sword, ] he begins. [ i’m princess zelda’s personal knight and the hylian champion. what’s skyloft? ] he takes a minuscule step back, studying this other link more closely and crossing his arms over his chest as he does so. something weird is going on here, for them to have the same name and the same sword, and even look sort of similar. he shakes a head running a hand through his hair and starting to sign again. [ don’t tell me you know princess zelda, too. ]
there was a limit to this madness . they’re getting close to reaching it . similarities in looks , even similarities in swords , were one thing but to have the same name seemed simply too odd . if this wasn’t a prank then his only way of making sense of it was just repeating in his mind that he didn’t know the surface world very well . maybe it was possible to have this happen . there was a lot more space . . . that would be more believable , though , if he hadn’t met only one person from the surface before today . & what was he the hylian champion of , exactly ? there was also the matter of zelda which he can’t imagine both their names are that popular for that much coincidence . he shakes his head lightly before signing & repling . ‘ i know someone named zelda , though she’s not a princess . ’ she was a goddess , though , his mind reminded him . ‘ she’s from skyloft , like me . skyloft --- ’ he pauses before gesturing vaguely up at the sky a moment then returns . ‘ it’s up there . an island above the clouds . ’

That wording…made Arthur think that Merlin…no ! He couldn’t have been alive for that long. Nope. Though really what part of away makes him think that ? The fact he died and failed everyone really but still he ignores that thought for now. Not when he’s cold and has his Merlin here. “So same old Merlin then.” He teased. Sure his teasings were sometimes of malice, especially when angry, but he never meant it meanly. It’s how he jokes…with Merlin. Can’t get that soft…
“Yes ! I woke up here drowning in the bloody lake and…” His death will never make him not cringe and not feel a face of shame and defeat. It’s something the king will never get over. It will never leave his head even if he wants it too “Regardless of that…minor…inconvenience…I am here now.”
same old merlin . he wonders if he really is . merlin was foolish in his days at camelot , no more than a mere boy , & the world had cruelly treated the bright eyed child he once was before . mercy had been stripped from him . his heart now held a chill within it . he knew he was beyond powerful now . still clumsy , though . still merlin , to arthur at least . he smiles at that . he wouldn’t want arthur , of anyone , to think of him differently . a god he might be , but the king’s friend he was first . ❝ you told me not t’ change . ❞
merlin squinted out at the lake at his next words . then back to arthur . ❝ minor inconvenience ? did you jus’ call you literally dying a minor inconvenience ? are you joking ? ❞ maybe coming back was an easy trip for him . he didn’t have to take the long way around ! ------ though it began to occur to merlin that arthur might not fully realize that . he may not realize how long ago his death was at all . ❝ arthur , do you know what year it is ? ❞
the music is captivating . it draws her in with interest but it isn’t quite what makes her stay . rupees , she’d quickly learned since arriving , were not used here . what they did use , though , she hadn’t much experience with . she crouches to a kneel to examine the small amount of collected money the musician had made . ❝ is this the currency here ? ❞ silvery coins & green papers --- far different from rupees , indeed .

Robin had a map unfolded on the bench in front of her as she moved her fingers across it, mumbling outloud to herself. She turned to a person passing by, “excuse me, could you locate exactly where we are please?” she asked.

the sight of a map intrigues her . she’d studied maps before & one gave hope for the possibility of understanding where she was & perhaps where hyrule was , even . glancing at it , though , it’s quickly understood that nothing on the map is familiar , not even in her studies of older maps of hyrule or surrounding areas . the queen sighs , then shakes her head . ❝ i’m sorry to say i can’t be of any help . wherever this place is , it’s far from my kingdom . there’s nothing i recognize on your map . ❞

For a while he thought truly he was alone. He had people here but…he hates the modern times and one wants to kill him so…that doesn’t lend itself to anything but Merlin…even after the pain he put him through he still goes back to him like how Arthur will always end up with Merlin. Arthur knows nothing of his fate to rise once again but what he does know is that he needs Merlin right here and right now…
…that is until Merlin slipped on the ice and fell hard.
Arthur can’t help but wince at his fall. “Still as graceful as ever Merlin . .” He jokes before he slides to Merlin, wrapping his arms around the male into a tight hug. A hug that was too overdo. “Thank God you’re here ! I was worried sick. Never ! Worry me sick like that.”
his name drawn out , in the way only arthur did . something that used to make him roll his eyes makes him want to cry on the spot out of sheer joy . ❝ couldn’t let myself get too talented while you were away , you know . ❞ he lets arthur tug him into the hug & he’s --- he’s solid . merlin wishes he could say he was warm , too , but the freezing metal coating arthur was just about as bad as ice not that he’d complain about it right now . solid , though , he was solid & his hair tickled merlin’s cheek & he even smelled like he used to . like leather & metal & a perfumed aroma that merlin had always associated with the palace . merlin’s arms curl up slowly around him in return & gently cling to the king in partial disbelief . he was back . this was real . his imagination was vivid at times but it hadn’t ever accomplished anything this perfectly accurate .
merlin scoffs . ❝ you were worried ? ❞ he had waited dutifully , like he always would , but fifteen centuries was a long time . though he loathed to admit doubt , there were years that would come by where he wondered if this day would ever come to pass . ❝ you died ! i thought i’d never see you again . ❞

at first, link doesn’t think anything of the hand on his shoulder, assuming it’s another new arrival trying to figure out where they are or what’s happened—it’s happened often enough. he turns around and immediately does a double take at the sight before him. uh—who in hylia’s name is this, why does he have a replica of the master sword, and why does he even sort of look like him? they’re not mirror images, there’s subtle differences here and there, but the resemblance is too close for comfort. his brow furrows and his shoulders tense as he turns to face his apparent doppelganger. he almost can’t decide which of his many questions he wants to ask first, so he sort of—asks them all in one go. [ who are you, why do you look like me, and why do you have the master sword ? ] he signs. there, at least he can get the three most burning questions off his chest.
there were differences in their face , but not near enough . link finds himself taking a step back from the stranger in surprise & his brows rise up towards his hairline . the thought of this being some kind of underlining prank was feeling more likely . maybe fi was developing a sense of humor ? the idea of that was worrisome as a whole . he desperately hoped none of her humor would come from scrapper . being called ‘master shortpants’ by one thing in this world was enough .
whatever this doppelganger was , he didn’t seem to like that he had a double . not that link was extremely pleased about it either . his lips tighten as he signs back in reply . ‘ my name is link . i’m a knight from skyloft . i don’t know why we look alike , but this is my sword . it was given to me . why do you have one like it ? ’ three answers & one question of his own because he thinks he’s owed at least one in the situation .

“Why did I ever think…going back to where I came from would bring be back ! Idiot !” He yelled to himself, tripping ever so often trying to get back to land. He just wants to go home. Just wants to fix everything…just wants Merlin. Just wants to be stress free because modern live confuses him and he has Morgana here (who he really needs to talk to) and then some other woman who seems familiar but he can’t place it now. This is too much for him.
Arthur finally makes it to land, tripping under the cold and the stiffness in his legs. He groans and gets on his knees until he hears a voice. A voice he’s heard many times before and dreamed he’d hear again. “Merlin !” He yelled. Trying to find the voice. “MERLIN !”
there’s only one thing to do after that . he bolts . chasing the tree line to the lake . if this is a dream then so far it’s a good one & he’s content at that . if this isn’t a dream then --- then this has been fifteen centuries in the making . a long day off , & a very overdue return to work .
it isn’t as graceful of a reunion as he’d like it to be . he comes out of the tree line but ice seeped & coating the frozen beach’s pebbles aren’t kind to his footing which , even after all this time , has never been graceful . as soon as he’s in arthur’s sights he hits the ice bad . he makes an unattractive yelp as he falls backwards to the ground then hisses at the pain . he pushes himself up , though . like one fall was going to stop him . ❝ arthur . . . ❞ getting back on his feet he treads slower , despite what he wants to do , & a smile that hasn’t been so genuine from him in years spreads across his face . ❝ you --- you’re alive ! ❞
maybe it’s a weird prank . except fi doesn’t play pranks . maybe he insulted her ? but he doubts fi even got insulted , though . he’d ask for advice but something has him doubt anyone could offer help as to why his sword wasn’t speaking to him . like he’s done a thousand times since he arrived , link glances over his shoulder at the purple hilt there foolishly hoping to find it flashing a blue light at him as a sign that fi was , in fact , still in there . something he doesn’t expect to find though , past the sight of the hilt & moving the opposite direction , is an eerily similar sight . he stops , then turns to get a better look . he’d never seen a sword like his , he was quite sure there wasn’t one in fact , but unless his eyes were deceiving him then someone was walking down the road with the exact blade strapped to their back . the exact sheath too , even !
he takes a pause to process this before he takes off in a run towards them . if fi wasn’t talking to him , if there was anything wrong with fi , then maybe there was answers with this . he slows as he gets close then stops when he’s able to reach & put a hand on the stranger’s shoulder .

wherever he is , it’s freezing . he’d been trying to visit the lake of avalon when he passed out ; collapsed as if sick along with what he remembers was a wave of nausea . the surroundings aren’t too odd for someone who was last in england . trees . overcast . freezing cold . but merlin feels the land on a deeper level than one’s common senses . this wasn’t right . not the right place --- nor the right feel of the air . the magic felt wrong . stitched together like a patchwork cloth .
a deep exhale sends his breath in a cloud of fog in front of him . he takes in his surroundings . trees , a dusting of snow , a lake to his right where he can see some figure wading in which brings him some concern . who in their right mind would be going for a swim in this weather ? he squints at the person . something is nagging at him in the back of his mind about them .
when realization hits him he goes into shock for a moment . his heart feels like it stops . it’s impossible . blond hair like a crown , armor glinting in what little light came from the clouds , a knight’s cape . they’re not even in albion he shouldn’t be here but --- but there is magic stitched wrong in this place . there are many things not possible around them , he’d guess . why wouldn’t this be something ?
he takes a step towards the lake . he shouts . ❝ arthur ?! ❞

“i don’t quite understand this place, but it seems to be a little better than where i have come from…” the dress she wore of course stood out due to it being from her time, but she didn’t really care much of it. “though everyone seems a little confused as i am. i don’t remember getting here.” she turned to the figure standing next to her, smiling softly. “tell me, been here all your life or are you in the same situation as me?”
the woman’s clothes are only a comfort to the queen . her own royal attire & crown stood out stark & dated & the woman’s clothes seemed the closest to her world that she’d seen . gloved hands fold in front of her as she surveys where they are . ❝ the same situation as you . ❞ she looks to her company , trying to keep worries successfully hidden in her expression . ❝ where is it that you’re from ? ❞
