I won’t apologize for being skinny
Unbelievable
the hardest part isn’t the reality that we aren’t together it’s having to convince myself with every new morning that i don’t care, that you don’t care. i’m running out of ways to poetically admit that i hate myself for still loving you.
Maybe “exciting” love is overrated. The sort that drives you crazy and keeps you up at night. Give me gentleness, care, humility instead. Give me soft kisses and pillow talk, and sharing intimate secrets on park benches. I prefer long walks and train rides to new places, or road trips to nowhere in particular. Give me safety, and knowing, and certainty. No mind games, no wondering. Give me happiness, pure, unadulterated happiness with a person who knows me inside and out.

How do you tell someone you don’t love them anymore?
There are many ways to tell somebody you no longer love them.
Some are more passive: you stop saying it back before you hang up the call. You stop saying it back before you walk out the door. Your hugs become more half hearted; your conversations become more mundane. When they ask you if you’re okay, you get annoyed. You brush them off; pretend that everything is fine. Small things end up in huge fights. You can’t bear to watch them cry.
Falling out of love is rarely gentle.
Other ways are more direct. You’ve been thinking about it for a while, but you say nothing until you’re sure. They don’t have a clue. One day, at breakfast, or at dinner, or a week before you’re supposed to go on holiday with their parents, you say “can we talk?” And they look at you through their unassuming eyes, thinking you’re going to tell them about your day but instead, you say “I don’t know how to tell you this, but I’m no longer in love with you.” And there is silence before there are tears and there is violence in the emptiness until it fades - and then there is just emptiness.
So, there are many ways to tell somebody you no longer love them. But there is no way to do it painlessly.
Especially not if they’re still in love with you.
We were alone one night. It was cold outside at the park but neither of us cared. He was speaking about something I didn’t understand but he was so passionate and I couldn’t focus on anything other than how his eyes were sparkling and I could just feel my face molding into something like fondness and all I could think about in that moment was how much I loved him.

How are you?“ I ask. And by that, I suppose I mean, have you found someone new? I’ve been looking at your Facebook profile but you haven’t updated it in a while. “I’m well, thanks,” you say. But, really, that doesn’t answer my question. “Are you happy?” I almost blurt out, but that’s too personal. I can’t ask that sort of question anymore; I haven’t the right. “Are you well?” you say calmly. “Yes,” I reply. No, I think. “That’s good.” This conversation is knocking the wind out of me. Why does it leave me so empty? Small talk is for strangers and we knew each other inside out. Knew. Past tense. I guess that’s why. You give me a small smile. It’s the awkward smile you used to give the homeless on the street. Suddenly, I feel disgusting. In this moment I realise it doesn’t matter whether you’ve found someone new. I’ve lost you already. I probably lost you a long time ago.

Give people time. Give people space. Don’t beg anyone to stay. Let them roam. What’s meant for you will always be yours.
