Parents, for the love of everything that ever pretended to be holy, do not make household cleaning a punishment for your children.

My parents did that. As an adult, I would rather stare at a blank wall for five hours straight than wash dishes. I would rather do math problems without a calculator and have my answers read aloud in public than clean a bathroom. If my hatred of cleaning was a capturable energy it could power interstellar travel. All because, growing up, cleaning house was a primary form of punishment.

Don’t fuckin’ do that. You’re not instilling discipline. You’re instilling hatred for something they need to be able to do as adults without hating every microsecond of it.

my parents did this to me growing up & context for this next part, I might be somewhere on the spectrum because of it, bc now I’ll clean the entire house if I get even the slightest hint of anger/irritability, and I used to live with 5 roommates.

They used to ask me all the time, “you cleaned again? Are you okay?” And one time that sentence finally broke me into tears, like, “thank you so much for understanding that, no, I don’t do this for fun, I do this bc if the house is already clean, you don’t have anything to use against me” and my roomie jus sat there like,

“Im really glad I don’t have to meet your family.”

Bao Pham’s “Summer Hues” at Corey Helford Gallery.

Opening on Saturday, April 10th, 2021 at Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, California is artist Bao Pham’s exceptional solo exhibition, “Summer Hues.”

Pham’s newest series, Summer Hues, is a direct continuation of his 2019 series entitled, The Rain which focused on the feelings of joy and sadness that come with a spring shower. Regarding his newest series, Pham shares, “During a time of isolation, I found myself looking to the outdoors, reminiscing about a lost summer. Figures are seen basking in the sun-drenched landscape, tangling among a mixture of blooming flowers and birds of the mid-west. Time seems to slow down enough for them to soak up the warmth and colors of summer.”
