FULL REVIEW FOR WITCHWARSRP

Before I start, I will get this out of the way. My opinions are not meant to offend, and they do not represent the majority. I want to be as helpful as possible, so if you want follow up comments, feel free to ask for them.

FIRST LOOK: 4/5

URL: I like it! It’s clean and to the point, and it’s also intriguing enough that I want to know more. Good choice!

PLOT (SIDEBAR): It’s beautifully written, although sometimes it was a bit confusing. It also gives a good intro to the beginning of the plot, but not so much the main plot. I think a smaller summary could be produced and then include the read more link. I do want to know more, but if I was just skimming, I wouldn’t know much of what to expect.

OVERALL: I’m intrigued, which is a good thing for new RPs!

THEME: 8/10

THEME: It’s simple, but effective. That says a lot about an RP, and I really enjoy when it’s easy to find what I’m looking for. The font is a nice size. I have a big screen with a high resolution, so if the font is too small it makes it very hard to read, but this is a good size.

COLORS: It’s very simple, and I personally enjoy that. For the plot, I kind of expected a darker theme, but it doesn’t hinder the RP at all.

LINKS & NAVIGATION: The links on the top bar are all the important ones, so that’s good. I personally like when the rules/faq is more accessible than having to go through the full navigation, but that might just be me. I’d look into having a specific link (perhaps in the sidebar where you have other links). For the most wanted as well, it might be a good place for a link to the full canon list.

GRAPHICS: 10/10

THEME GRAPHICS: The header is well made, again simple and to the point. I love the font used! The coloring goes well with the white theme. The pictures in the sidebar are a similar coloring (I can’t entirely tell if they are the same one, but they are close enough that it looks good). I love the uniformity.

CHARACTER GRAPHICS: Again, the similar coloring makes it really nice. It looks good with the theme. I can tell you’ve worked everything out to coordinate which always makes me happy to see.

PLOT: 7/10

THOUGHTS: It’s a long read, and there isn’t really a short summary to really get the gist of it. Once again, I think the sidebar is a good place to put a shortened version of the plot to get people interested in reading the full one, rather than just including the first paragraph of the full plot. It’s the synopsis on the back cover-it pulls the reader into opening the book. Now, beyond that, it’s very well written and interesting enough that I think those who do take the time to read it will love it.

CHARACTERS: 10/10

FACES: You have a wide variety of faces available, and it’s very diverse. A lot of role plays are trying to do that now, but you’ve done it very successfully. Good work. 

BIO LAYOUT: It’s effective and to the point! All the valid information is right up front and then you have separated everything else into easy to identify sections. They are all pretty well written as well! You’ve definitely developed interesting characters.

APPLICATION: The process is simple enough and the application itself is enough to make the player really think and plan out the character. It’s well done.

OTHER COMMENTS: Lovely work! I don’t really have anything to add, you’ve done a great job of developing the characters and giving options. I especially like that you haven’t predetermined the gender/sexual identities of the characters. That gives players some freedom!

RULES & ADMINS: 10/10

ADMINS: As with everything I’ve noticed, the sidebar mentioning of the admins is simple and effective.  It puts the necessary information out in the open. Your little introductions in the administration link are so cute, and you seem like lovely people. Definitely the type of people RPers would want to know!

RULES: You’ve covered all your bases with the rules and information. I don’t really have any questions about it! But like I said earlier, I think having a direct link to the rules somewhere would be very helpful!

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I really enjoyed stalking your RP! I think you’ve done an amazing job developing this, and it will go well for you! Best of luck, and anyone interested in supernatural things should check @witchwarsrp out!

Hey, I was wondering if you had any advice for using the words- second or moment. I feel like I use them a lot in my writing, like at least once a paragraph and I have to go back and interchange them to keep from sounding repetitive. Do you have any advice or recommendations for other words?

I’ve struggled with this exact problem and have found the best solution is to cut out the need for either word altogether. Consider “second” and “moment” to be crutches and try to write without them.

Here are some examples from my older writing.

1) Once he’s gone, I stand still for a moment resettling into my surroundings. The room smells like fabric softener, and the CD’s have a plastic and cologne scent. I check the boxy handwriting on the cases.

Okay, there’s actually a lot here I want to remove because very little of it is relevant to the character or storyline. She hasn’t been gone long enough for it to matter that she takes a minute to resettle into her surroundings.

Revision: Alone again, I sit down on the bed and read the boxy handwriting on the cases- they smell freshly unwrapped.

I’ve left in the relevant details and taken out any reference to the passing of time.

2) He stares at me for a moment then puts his gift down gently.

Here the male character is processing some surprising information the MC has just given him. However, my characters all “stare” too much, so let’s rewrite this sentence as well.

Revision: He blinks, then puts his gift down gently.

I’ve started substituting “blink” for a lot of things and know it too will become a crutch if I don’t find more creative ways to describe lulls in thought and dialogue.

3) She shares a look with me and for a moment wehave an understanding. I loosen my grip on the pen and relax in my seat. 

This interaction is between a teacher instructing the class and a student sitting at a desk. These elements were previously introduced, so there’s quite a bit in this excerpt that isn’t relevant including the length of time the look lasted. 

Revision: Weshare a look, and I relax my grip on the pen. 

The amount I shaved off is not an example every writer needs to follow. There was nothing wrong with the original sentence, but the repetition of information along with the “moment” crutch made it clunky in context.

So, if you find yourself using a word or phrase too often in your writing, hit backspace and decide if it really needed to be there in the first place. Some scenes may suffer without it, but most will be just fine on their own.
