Emi was still grinning before she knew what had happened. The situation had changed dramatically before her eyes and she felt her knees go weak. Hymdni was lying there, not moving, bleeding and looking rather like a heap next to his now battered looking wheelchair. Flashbacks flew across Emiâs field of vision. A memory best left forgotten clouding up her field up vision, she dropped to her knees and just stared at Hymndiâs still form.
ââHello?! Can you hear me? Youâre going to be alright, weâre going to pull you out slowly, okay?! Ready? One, two threeâŠhere we g- Oh lord.ââ
Shaking her head and feeling hot, salty tears grace her lips as they ran down her pale cheeks, Emi mustered up some courage and began to crawl to Hymndi, she needed to be strong. This person needed help.
Reaching his body, Emi noticed the slow, raspy breaths escaping his lips and hope soothed her guilt, âHymndi?! Itâs Emi! Can you hear me?â Unsure what to do, Emi pressed her head to his chest to hear a heart hammering as if it were trying to escape from his rib cage. She wasnât a master at first aid, but if she could be certain that he was alive, that was enough to calm her nerves, 'I need to get the nurseâŠI can't leave him hereâŠ' she was trapped between a rock and a hard place, she needed Hymndi to come around. Looking down at her hands she noticed the crimson red, slowly turning to a dirty rust colour as the small pool of blood grew around Hymndiâs head and neck, she whispers, âPlease wake upâŠâ.
Hymndi felt himself replaying an event. A loud crash, a jarring motion, screams all around. He was tossed forward, then suddenly slammed back. His head pounded, the world going dull. He managed to look to his right to see⊠He took in a deep breath, coming back to the here and now. He kept his eyes closed, afraid of what he would see if he opened his eyes. Youâre fine. Youâre fine. You can do this. Everything is okay. He heard a muffled voice. Was it that girlsâ? What was her name⊠His mind scrambled for the name. Emi? Was that it? It must be. He felt a light pressure against his chest. Was she pressing on it? No, that didnât seem right. It was too gentle of a pressure. Was she feeling for his heartbeat? Maybe. Maybe that was it. Or maybe he was just dying and couldnât feel her touch as well.
"Please wake upâŠ"
Hymndi slowly began getting his full senses back. His eyes shot open as all the pain came flooding to him, taking in a deep gasp of air. His gaze shifted to Emi, his fists balled up. He felt his head throbbing, and felt like his hair was sticking to the back of his head. âIâm awake.. Just needed⊠A nap afterâŠâ He let out a grunt as more pain ebbed in his head. âAfter getting my butt kicked.â he let out a bit of a laugh, looking around for his wheelchair. He saw it a few feet away from him, a bit scuffed up, but nothing too bad. He slowly tried to push himself up but immediately got light headed, falling back to the ground. He felt weak. As weak as that fateful day. He also felt ashamed. He had screwed up terribly. He had probably taken a few years off this poor girlâs life. He felt tears beginning to stream down his face. He didnât know whether they were from the pain or the emotional conflict he was facing in his heart. âI-Iâm sorry⊠I-I didnât mean⊠For this to happen..â He forced the words out, his mouth dry. He balled his fists up again. his eyes opening, the tears slowly still streaming out. He had to make it to his wheelchair. It was the only way. He couldnât do it alone though.. He mustered up some more strength, feeling weaker by the moment. âMy wheelchair⊠Please⊠Canât walk to nurse..â he hoped everything would be alright. He would hate to leave this girl with such a traumatic event without being able to make it up to her.
His words slowly sunk into Emi's brain...my wheelchair...please...he wanted help. Her legs moved far faster than her mind as she pushed herself off the ground and sprung towards the slightly battered wheelchair a few feet away. Grabbing the handle she wasted no time spinning it towards Hymndi and crouching by his side she positioned herself in such away that she could move him with as little discomfort as possible, "I'm going to lift you in to the wheelchair. Stay with me Hymndi!" the panic had an edge on her voice as she heaved Hymndi's broken body into his chair.
Seeing the wound on the back of his head, Emi's quick thinking drew her eyes to the side of the track where her towel had been thrown previous to starting the race. It took her 3 seconds to fetch it and press it to the back of Hymndi's head. Grabbing his hand and holding it to the cloth she drew a shaky breath, she had never been good with blood, not since her accident, "You need to try and keep that there, Hymndi, okay?!"
Trusting in his strength she began to push his chair in the direction of the nurse's office. Her legs moving one in front of the other in quick succession, "Stay with me, Hymndi. We'll get you help!"
