OK but I wanna talk about this cuz when Chai asks if she really does care about him and she does such a POOR JOB at pretending she doesn't he still seems to take it at face value and immediately questions if she thought he was just gonna screw up.

idk if I'm just Autistic and didn't read the tone right (entirely possible) or if Chai really has such a deep-seated inferiority problem (the one which Dream CNMN points out) he's more ready to believe people don't care much for him even when it's kinda obvious they do. When she didn't confirm she was worried, he immediately jumped to "well I guess it's just cuz you have so little faith in me."

chai's self-esteem is so low to the point where he is 100% willing to believe that no one cares abt him. even when it's obvious. even when it is literally right in front of his fucking face.

during the parry tutorial section, she at one point asks him if he's okay. when she first ran into macaron's office she said, "chai don't be dead!" now here she is, doing a piss poor job at lying abt how she doesn't care abt him.

and he'll believe it. bc y should anyone care abt him? ofc it's just bc peppermint doesn't have faith in him.

u could also read it as him assuming that she's being genuine bc he legitimately can't tell she's lying. chai has a lot of issues reading other ppl, tones, and social cues (him taking peppermint srsly abt shooting him out of a canon later on when she said that sarcastically being a prime example)

personally, i think it's a bit of both.
