sometimes, in brief pockets of time when not even the breakneck pace he moved at could outrun the past he so stubbornly refused to ruminate on, kuukou could still see that younger ichiro he had walked beside once upon a time ago. ichiro, rarely ever forthcoming, would talk of loss back then, and kuukou could still see tight purse of his scowling lips. could still see fingers curled so tight even the bruises on his knuckles whitened. shoulders wound so taut that it looked as if one touch would his snap the ramrod of his back, and he’d crumble under all those burdens he held tight onto, because they were all he had and he’d be damned if he lost those too.

but now. now, in the early hours of the morning, kuukou watches ichiro blithely chatter about something his brothers had given him. watches his hard worn hands gently clean out his mug that he’d drank their morning tea from. sees the light pull and tug of the muscles define the relaxed slope of his shoulders and kuukou could feel himself fall for this freer, brighter ichiro all over again, as he had been every single moment since fitting himself back by his side.

but kuukou knew that’s still too heavy a weight to place on ichiro, even unburdened as he is now.

kuukou pulled his teacup to his, the smouldering warmth of his smile hidden.
