boy howdy anon do i ever!!

i’ll preface this by saying that it’s mostly akira/hikaru unless otherwise specified (i never pretended to be anything other than single track garbage), and on that note, i don’t know if you’re coming in from the anime or the manga but if you watched the anime i would totally suggest reading the hokuto arc of the manga (who am i kidding? read the entire manga) because it lays the ground work for akira and hikaru’s current+future relationship dynamics, which most fic uses as a spring board. THAT BEING SAID it’s not totally necessary or anything!! there just might be some references/characters that you’re unfamiliar with.

1. THE CLASSICS (according to me)

A Resolution of Territory : The point is, life is hectic, but it’s good. (10k, NSFW)

hikaru’s a little shit who’s spending his life winning and making everyone else's’ lives just little bit more obnoxious. oh, and he also seems to orbit akira three guesses as to why. this, imo, might be one of the finest fics ever written. it’s hilarious. it’s almost absurdly in character, its pacing is stupendous, and a LOT feels like it happens for a fic that’s only about 10k. it’s a nice post-canon fic and is pretty much exactly how i imagine the rest of their lives going down. and anyway, tbh, waya’s characterization is reason enough to read this fic just by itself. there is also some smoking hot smut at the end of it too if that sweetens the deal for you at all. and there’s a nice (shorter) sequel which is equally funny and equally in character.

One Thing : Competition is not limited to Go. (NSFW, ~6k)

horny teenaged rivals and competitive sex. ok this fic is basically just a lot of porn. but with FEELINGS!!! i read it way back in the day, and i remember being weirdly offput by the first scene for some reason, so if that happens to you just stick with it!! also there is some really hilarious shit in here too. a couple of lines were laugh out loud funny to me. but yeah it’s just like it says on the tin: akira and hikaru get into messy sexual oneupmanship situations and everyone wins.  it’s ridiculously hot and well written.

When He Sees it : Hikaru is always watching Touya, but lately, he’s really been looking. (2k, NSFW)

hikaru’s fixation of akira is getting a little bit out of hand and is maybe about a little bit more than just go. short and sweet and really exemplifies the hikaru/akira dynamic. please do yourself a favor and read this stat. 

Waterloo : Hand of God, game over, go home. (8k, SAFE)

akira has an official match against his dad and things just kind of unravel from there. i’m always super impressed by fics that can spend time actually ruminating on the go (while i’m over here still struggling with the mechanics of checkers….), and this fic does that well. i like it even more when the go says something which this fic dominates at. in fact that’s like the primary method of communication for everyone involved. it’s great. so this is a wonderful, super intense fic. great akira/hikaru dynamic with bonus poppa touya + hikaru, and poppa touya + akira, which are both relationships i absolutely adore (and adore speculating about)! this is a great get together fic, but really it’s more about them as go players and rivals and eachother’s everythings.

A Proof by Contradiction (Eight Primary Sources) : “Miguchi-san,” she says, “I cannot pretend to understand the technicalities of what my son has achieved, or brought upon the world. So you must excuse my ideas if they seem foolish to you. You are conversant with all the particulars; I can only speak of what I know. Akira was never ‘Sai’, and he did not create ‘Sai’. ‘Sai’ existed, and Akira found him – it. He accomplished what his father could not.“Perhaps he believed that if he succeeded, he would be able to meet Shindou-san again.” (~6k, SAFE, implied off-screen character death)

hikaru gets hit by a mack truck and world keeps on turning. this fic is haunting and i have always been fascinated by it. stylistically superb, clean, really wonderful writing. there’s not really a good way to sum this up but you really have to read it at least once. just trust me. sad and subtly painful without being over the top, and so so so good.

Divination : He’s sick of pretending that he’s okay with the imbalance of secrets between them. But there have been plenty of times lately when Akira has wondered if perhaps this thing growing around Hikaru, the thing that keeps waking him up breathless at night, has nothing to do with Hikaru’s secret at all (5k, light NSFW)

pretty much what it says on the tin. a rift develops between akira and hikaru and their go, due to the big old sai secret. this is one of my fave ‘hikaru tells akira about sai’ fics. OH and since you’re new to fandom please note: may 5th/’hikaru tells akira’ are this fandom’s bread and butter. it’s great! this is a super, super intense and emotionally charged fic and you really should read this immediately.

Inertia : Touya has always been a quiet, mature child. (11k, NSFW, akira/others +hikaru/others, unsympathetic depiction of severe postpartum depression, infidelity)

akira gets married, has a kid, and then things fall to bits and hikaru and him end up raising his daughter together. not nearly as fluffy as it sounds (and very different from most kid!fic). i actually rec this one with some trepidation. there are aspects of it that make me extremely uncomfortable, in addition to some questionable trope use. but i feel i would be remiss in at least not including this as it is a fandom favorite. the writing and storytelling are all good, i’m just a bit squeamish about some of the themes i guess? some of the elements that bothered me in this fic may not be a problem for you so give it a try!

The July Bookish Challenge: 2/30 - A Book That Kept You Up Until the Early Hours of the Morning:

Hikaru no Go written by Yumi Hotta and illustrated by Takeshi Obata.

Every time I pick up just one of these manga volumes shortly before bed, I end up sitting by my bookshelf hours later fighting not to pull yet another volume off the shelf instead of going to sleep because I have to be up in 5 hours.
