Things that we’ve learned about Kaeya and Diluc from HS

Kaeya and Diluc write letters to each other

Kaeya thought Diluc wouldn’t reply to his letters but Diluc actually does

They call each other K and D in the letters (which is kinda cute?)

They’re always looking out for each other. They show that they really care, they really care a lot

Kaeya informed Diluc about everything while he was away, and celebrated when they finally got their revenge on the man who sullied their father’s death

Diluc wants to act solo but he knows there might be times when they have to join forces and doesn’t mind

Diluc has so many of Kaeya’s letters around his house that he has kept

Also, Kaeya has really good handwriting

Kaeya’s eye was wounded when he fought Diluc, but he was not blinded. He wanted to pretend that he was, but Diluc knows the truth

Meaning that Kaeya can perfectly see with his right eye and he wears the eyepatch for another reason

Kaeya doesn’t blame Diluc for the fight, he knows that it was bad timing

Kaeya’s family, the Alberich Clan, were not the original rulers of Khaenri’ah but they took over. Which means that Kaeya is really a prince in a way

His family wanted to revive Khaenri’ah but couldn’t. They still want to continue with their plans (They might be allies with the Abyss Order then?)

Kaeya only has a small paper that talks about his clan that he saved when his birth father tried to eliminate all evidence

Kaeya’s melancholic when he thinks about his Clan and his birth father

Kaeya misses the Winery and goes there frequently, he spent a few days there while Diluc was still away. Kaeya stayed in his old bedroom and all the staff is happy with him

Kaeya has kept some of the seashells they found when they were kids (I’m crying at this)

Now that the parents will be sheltered at U.A., I can only think of the parent-student-teacher interactions that have the potential to go on (if the story weren't so bleak presently). Getting to watch the kids train (and how hard they go at each other; Joint Training Match 3 flashbacks) and talk to the teachers would be nice! But I feel for the kids' privacy. Dorms let them be a bit independent so RIP anyone trying to date, your SO's parents are right there watching. Also, Origin Trio Mom Unity!

I want Rei talk to Inko and tell her how much Shouto talked about Izuku. Rei knows how hard it is to be separated from her children, so I think she could offer Inko some support.

Also I wonder if Rei knows that Bakugou saved Natsuo. Or that Touya was the one kidnapping Katsuki.

Yep, these three are already connected through so much angst.

So after the leak, what are your thoughts about the nature of Touya and Rei's relationship?

It’s a very wordy chapter, and I’m not fully convinced that the scanlation got everything right, but for now, I gather that Touya had no respect for Rei, which made it hard for her to parent him.  I’m sure this is in a large part a reflection of how Endeavor treated her. But Touya seems to have concluded that Rei was too weak and couldn’t decide anything for herself, so she was not worth listening too. 

And Rei seems unable to find the words to connect with Touya. I think she was trying to give him the same message she was giving to Shouto - to be free to decide who they become. But still, it didn’t get through to Touya because I think he felt that she was also just invalidating his dream.

Looks like in tte end, Enji's cowardiceis what destroyed the family.

He couldn't face Touya because that would mean facing himself, an so he ran back to the original reason he got married, to have an heir.

Then he couldn't deal to what his actions had made to his son, so he ran away from his family and put all responsibility to Rei.

And when she didn't live up to the expectations he himself was running away from, he put the blame on her.

At the end of the day, Enji used his ambition to run away from the emotions he didn't know how to deal with, and it was only when it was taken away from him that he was forced to confront them.

Not completely, as he still put his duty as the new number 1 as an excuse to not have to look back too much, but Dabi and his family's visit has finally made him stop running and face his past actions, feelings and consequences

The more I see Enji and Rei the more I hurt for them. They married each too young. They weren’t ready to be parents. They had no idea how to deal with Touya’s despair as parents. If just someone more mature than them was on the scene, someone to guide them and helping them to help their child... Touya wouldn’t have end up like this.

Yeah, Touya really didn’t need to end up like this. And it’s not that they didn’t tell him the right things, but that their words carried no weight because there was so much dissonance between their words and actions.

I don’t think it had to do so much with youth and inexperience, but with the nature of their marriage. Usually society makes behaviours taboo that carry a high risk of unfavourable outcomes. Quirk marriage is a taboo not only because it’s transactional, but because its whole purpose is to create a certain type of child. So the others by definition will be “failures.”

I don’t think they fully understood what it means to play god with small human beings, and when they did, it was unbearably painful and too late.

Deku's Notebook on twitter pointed out that aside from honorifics, Dabi says ....Shoto and not just Shoto or Todoroki Shoto as before. Normally .... mean pausing? So maybe he is starting to soften towards even Shoto whom he hated since birth after Shoto showed only love and concern over his brother during the fight and did not actually defend his dad saying things like their dad didn't deserve it or act like he was their dad's foot soldier?

Yes, I saw that in the JPN raws. Ellipsis normally means a visible/pregnant silence. It is significant that there is a pause there. 

I think Touya reluctantly adding Shouto there at the end of the list (”Todoroki-enji, Oka-san, Fuyumi-chan, Natsuo-kun, ...Shouto”)  means that he’s thinking of him as part of the family. On the recording and during the fight he called him mostly with dehumanizing labels like “masterpiece” and “puppet”.  I felt it was sort of the same idea as Shouto switching from “Touya” in the fight to “Touya-nii” in the hospital, after he had the “he is me” realization. 

Touya crying blood in that scene reinforces this interpretation. Those tears of blood are tied to him thinking about his family. 

For better or worse, I think their encounter here made them understand each other a bit better. Obviously, Touya revealed a lot more - and Shouto could empathize with at least some of those feelings. Shouto didn’t really reveal much of his own feelings about his family - though he certainly didn’t contradict Touya or try to defend Endeavor with words - but his actions spoke of that “pure and selfless” that Touya was claiming heroes didn’t have:

he took the fight upon himself and used himself as a living shield between Touya and the others

he first told Touya to stop it when he hurt Nejire

he brought up Natsuo almost getting hurt

he did not seem to care how he was hurting but showed concern about Touya burning himself

he only attacked seriously when Touya blew Deku away

Not once did he try to save himself or defend himself against Touya’s accusations or hatred. Maybe Touya still sees him as pathetic compared to his own fire, but Shouto showed his essence there as the type of hero Stain recognized in him.

Sorry for this rant but I really hate that they are making Shoto look bad by making it seem like what happened to Dabi was all his fault, that if he wasn't born then Dabi would have been fine and became a great hero. Why can't the boy catch a break? Does Horikoshi hate Shoto or something?

I felt the story was quite clear that it was rather the other way around; Touya couldn’t be a hero (at least not an All Might-level hero) and Shouto was born to hammer this home and make him give up. Obviously, it’s not his fault. 

And Touya wasn’t fine. He had a genetic problem of warring quirk factors, plus the problem of Endeavor putting the weight of the expectation on him and withdrawing his attention when that goal became out of reach. Shouto was merely the “infuriating eyesore” for Touya to remind him that he’s being replaced and to focus his anger on. But he was not fine either way.

Also, this was always part of Shouto’s character. We knew from the very beginning that his mere existence broke his family apart (or at least that’s how Shouto perceived it). 

He knew that his special status hurt his siblings:

He has some unspoken guilt over Touya.

He was born into an impossible situation where his mere existence just made everything worse, brought everyone misery and suffering. 

But that’s the point of his hero journey. In UA, for the first time he has friends, people who are happy that he exists and who see him as a person and not some special masterpiece. And even more importantly, he understands that he has choices, he has agency, he can choose to use his entire being, his whole spirit, his full power to help people and put them at ease regardless of what cards he was dealt with. 

That’s why it’s so important that his first step is saving his mom and not with a display of power, but by simply being there for her. By showing her who Shouto is and what kind of person he works on becoming.

I think Shouto’s memories of Rei’s breakdown is not the full truth (i.e. it wasn’t just Shouto reminding him of Endeavor that caused her breakdown) but the truth as his 5-year-old self understood it. But still, it must give him a lot of faith that the person he felt he drove away, he could also help heal. It shows that it’s possible to cut through a lot of negative history and to turn things around with nothing more than being himself. 

That him expressing himself is something positive that can bring people happiness, that he can too teach others how to open up and change their perspective. 

And coming from that experience of making everyone miserable by the mere fact of being born and learning to trust in himself not just as someone with a lot of power but with the ability to reassure people to the point where he makes it his hero manifesto to put people at ease by simply showing up is what his arc is about.
