if you've read/watched hikaru no go, please talk to me. that manga changed my life and nobody around me knows about it and it's slowly driving me insane
reread all of hikaru no go (total 23 volumes) in 4 days! the last 19 volumes in two days! mwahahahahahahahahahahaha
hm i think one of the fundamental appeals of the ending to hikaru no go is the privacy of hikaru's grief. it feels like a very true expression of a life in a story that blurs the line between fantasy and reality it uses the fantasy to express a truth of reality. when sai passes on hikaru is left with a huge absence in his heart. a grief he cant explain or let go of. the loss of someone who loved him so tenderly but not perfectly and who he loved in return. sai changed hikaru's life in a way he can't explain. no one has ever met sai but hikaru carries sai with him.
Randomly thinking about how it is objectively hilarious how many times I've reread a manga about 12 year olds playing a board game and it's just as amazing to me every time lmao 10/10 comfort manga tbh
cant say whether it was yumi hotta's intention or not but the way she wrote adolescent depression has been one of the best depictions i've ever witnessed. hikaru's coming of age story might be one of the top best and it leaves me with a bittersweet sort of feeling that he continues to play go with a heart full of love but is still isolated in his grief... the rematch with isumi made me want to die but i also felt such an overwhelming sense pride towards hikaru, and i’m glad he found solace in realizing he could still pursue what he loved so deeply, and in those moments, be as close to sai as he possibly could.... i just hope that one day hikaru could be satisfied with himself and say with confidence that he was sai's pupil...
Hikaru no go is a sorrowful story about grief and the loss of childhood that pretends to be a light-hearted sports shounen and it always makes me want to bang my head into a wall. AUGH hikaru...that smiling child vanished somewhere into that solitary room. What are you supposed to do when the person who was so important to you that it devoured your life just leaves. To everyone else Hikaru suddenly became a lonely person who would look at the game he loved with such sad eyes. auugjggbbg hikaru
It's Hikaru no Go Day, so I wanted to share my Hikago-themed bullet journal spread for May~! I'm really happy with it, and I thought there might be a few more people who'll appreciate it here than some other places >.>
I used the same font as the English HnG volumes, and the game diagrams are all from various games throughout the manga:
Cover: Hikaru (Sai) v. Toya Meijin (ch 101, Shinshodan game) combined with some basic opening joseki
Week 1: Hikaru v. Sai (ch 125, it's the one that happens on 5/5 :p ); sai v. toya koyo (ch 113, 'net Go)
Week 2: Akira v. Sai (ch 35, 'net Go); Hikaru v. Yashiro (ch 165, although the full kifu is also at the end of 177; the crosscut at the tengen <3 this is my favorite game in the series <3)
Week 3: Hikaru (Sai) v. Akira (ch 6, second game, they're just little babies aljksks)
Week 4: Hikaru v. Akira (ch 147, their first real game); Hikaru v. Suyong Hong (ch 76, the key point that turns the game around)
For most of them, I didn't pick any particularly special parts of the game, just a group of stones that looked nice and fit in the area they needed to fit in, but I did pick a couple groups for their significance (Yashiro, Suyong).
