Booking up 2018- where would YOU like to see us play?
Sound checking for our last Christmas concert of the season. There are times in life when you realize you've been given a gift that is rare. Exceptional, once in a lifetime and more reflective of the perfect eternal than of the tainted present. When you realize this gift was specifically intended for you from the One who designed and authored your very life, it fuels hope. Hope, the desire and search for a future good. I am thankful this Christmas for one such gift in my best friend. Someone who has sacrificed and labored with me in the desire to live a difficult life but one that would bring glory to God and show others the greatness of His love. We've been tossed and tried, brought to great heights and heartbreaking depths but in all of it her perseverance and grace has been an endless encouragement to me. This friendship is gift too great for words but keeps me looking to and searching out the Giver of it who will one day redeem all things to make them reflect His own perfect goodness. -H
Week one of touring is complete. From the California Bay Area to the Oregon coast to Eastern Washington and back to the coast in Seattle. What started out as 2 of us in a packed car ended up being 4 of us in an even more packed car with the addition of our favorite dobro player, Emmett Franz, and a new friend, Luke Rattei, who has turned out to be a genius behind the sound board. We also met up with our dear friend and Seattle native, Bruce Pearson, who's joined us on upright bass. We couldn't have asked for better weather or kinder people on this tour. In Florence, Or we performed around a bonfire and then stayed in an adorable A-framed cabin that overlooked a lake. In Spokane we witnessed the generosity of people as our concert benefitted a village in Uganda in need of a safe school building and the response was overwhelming. In the Seattle area we were reunited with friends who hosted us on our tour last year and graciously fed and entertained us weary travelers once again. This marks H&K's fourth annual Pacific Northwest Summer tour. It is my favorite tour of the year as we get to drive through lush forests and along quiet coasts, taking breaks along the way to hike and camp as well as meet up with friends we've made on past tours and hear their stories. I'm learning a lot about "rest" at the moment. Touring is a crazy way of life and it can be easy to get caught up in the moment and take on the stress but I'm seeking to quiet my heart and thoughts, to find the moments where I can listen for Gods voice and remember that everything in this life is fleeting except that which brings Him glory. God forbid me to obsess about the cares of this life and grant me eyes to see that which has heavenly value. To love and ascribe worth to Him and to pour myself out for those He places in my life.
Heading out on tour again in a couple weeks and so excited to have all new artwork from the talented artist, Kyle Naylor. http://kylenaylordesign.tumblr.com/

Finding fun in the Southwest. It has been a treat touring with chelseamoonmusic and Emmett Franz. These two are not just top notch musicians but have the sweetest hearts on top of that. Class acts all around!

Our first stop was a couple hours south of the big apple- Vineland New Jersey. It's commonly said that food reflects the personality of a culture- and that's exactly what we've found in the agricultural town of Vineland. We did our homework and discovered this gem- Landis Pig Roast LLC. It's planted right on the main drag in the historic part of town. The food was just as welcoming and just as charming as the locals. After being seated and soaking up the beautiful smoky medley of flavors circulating through the air, we dug into the menu. We were greeted with a steamy hot basket of bread paired with a fresh garlic chili pepper oil- it was devoured in minutes. After smelling the convincing smokehouse outback we ordered two of their hottest plates- Mofongo Smoked Pulled Pork with Chicharrone- mashed green plantain, rolled with a crunchy pork skin, drizzled with fresh garlic sauce. Before our entree made it to the table, the sweet waitress surprised us with a juicy cubano sandwich. She insisted that we try an authentic taste- she was right- it was life changing. Thank you, sweet people of Vineland, for making our first stop a memorable one! On to New York City! H&K
Uncovered
There is a place in my heart closed off and hidden away. A place that I turn away from and pretend does not exist. But it is this place in my heart that the Lord continues to put His finger upon and gently remind me that He is still waiting to enter into and rule over the fears that remain therein. Like most other fears, this one is tied to many lies and finds me in my weakest moments to shout over me and break me completely. I am not good enough.... I am not beautiful enough to be loved by anyone... God does not love me as much as He loves others but if I work a little harder, He might eventually bless me... and so on the lies attached to my fears go. Over the years I’ve learned to try to pretend these fears don’t exist but deep in my heart they remain and formulate so much of my opinion about God and about myself. Lately the Lord has been challenging me to step out in faith and deepen my trust in His love towards me. I did not expect that the first step of this journey would be Him drawing back the curtain and exposing in His perfect light my fears, buried deep as they may be. At first sight of these fears I am reduced to a weeping puddle and my instincts are to distract myself and do my best to ignore the lies. But years of doing this have left me still carrying them with me and still broken in their presence. I set up my walls and refuse to trust God with the things I care most about because I believe the lie that He doesn’t really love me all that much. I am tired of carrying these fears with me. So as I fall on trembling knees before My Father with all my brokenness exposed and no where to run if He does not come save me, He whispers in my ear that there is nothing I could ever do to earn His love given completely and freely to me. That I can come to Him with every hurt because He cares for everything that I care for. That I can be vulnerable and broken in His hands because He alone designed me and He alone can sustain and heal me. That He will never leave nor forsake me. It’s only in this place that these lies are exposed for what they are and where my great God becomes so much greater than these powerless fears. Oh Lord, keep me in this place until Your love heals all my wounds. “Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I (God) will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands.” Isaiah 49:15-16

Learning How to Tread Gracefully
With each season flows a new perspective. With hope and expectancy I always anticipate a graceful transition; turning a fresh page into a new chapter of life-letting forgiveness take it’s toll. As a touring musician, minutes turn into hours, which turn into days and conclude as one huge memory without designated ‘days’ or ‘weeks’. I typically look back over time and decipher time by seasons. Fall is especially my favorite, the cooler weather tends to trap me indoors and slows me down- in a good way. My to-do list fills up with books I've been meaning to read, journaling my life stories on the road, and most important- sitting still and processing my thoughts. There's no disclosure that each of us are running- racing our days away in hopes to stay on top of social media, get that promotion, or catch the next days sunrise on instagram, or what have you. My conscious keeps offering this reoccurring thought that we’re actually missing out on life and time itself by running ourselves on the treadmill of dissatisfaction- passing up the life right in front of our eyes.
With this mindset, I’m treading lightly into this week and giving myself time. Time for my thoughts, time for my prayers, and time to be thankful. I recently lost a huge inspiration in my life, a friend, and mentor that taught me things that truly matter. This man was a violin maker and recently hand crafted a violin especially from me. During our afternoon visits he would regularly share his lifetime of dreams. Some came true, and others didn't even come close. As he shared the stories of mountains and valleys of a lifetime, he never failed to emphasis the heart and spring of his compassion and love towards people and change- his relationship with Jesus Christ. This unexpected tragedy has shaken me out of cruise control and caused me to reflect a little deeper and generate more love towards people. As we all travel home to our family or friends for the Holidays, I challenge you to go the extra mile in love and appreciation for your people. Give yourself an extra hour with someone and consciously listen with gratitude- let it tenderize your heart and break your ideals. As a young woman, I find myself focusing on myself and my inner dialogue of struggles- stressing over circumstances that won't even matter tomorrow. But as I continue to learn how to cast my subconscious and hard thoughts on Him, and veer my vision towards gratitude, it’s made all the difference. Clothing yourself in thankfulness can feel a whole lot like wearing your most favorite sweater- you know, the one thats pilled and perfect- the feeling of home!

New Comings
Hello Friends! As our last few days of summer dwindle down, we look forward to what the next season holds.
These couple months ahead hold a handful of exciting ventures.
Firstly, we are recording a 6 song Winter EP for you; of which will include 'Take me North' and our rendition of " O' Come O' Come Emmanuel'. We're shooting for a cozy cabin vibe, loaded with melodies that will warm the soul through the cold months. There will be loads of sweeping peddle-steel, and tastefully bowed bass for days. Keep an eye out for December 1st- that is our hopeful release date.
Secondly, We're embarking out for a Christmas tour of California. We have a skeleton of dates filled, but would love to occupy the remainder with house shows, and christmas parties alike.
Grace and Peace,
K
