High End Hippie
Happy birthday to the Hubble Space Telescope. On April 24, 1990, shuttle mission STS-31 saw Discovery launch the telescope successfully into its planned orbit. After some early trouble with mirrors and some daring fix-it missions, Hubble has turned out to be one of the greatest achievements in the history of science. Call that hyperbole if you like, but the more I’ve learned about the Hubble Space Telescope — through the telescope, I should say — the more I stand in awe. (NASA/HubbleSite/APOD)

Artist Statement: Dangers of Beauty
A jellyfish is considered to be one of the most dangerous creatures of the entire sea. Depending on the specific nature of jellyfish you are dealing with, one out of a dozen of their tentacles are covered with millions of stingy cells, releases a toxin into your body that can potentially kill you. Though the dangers of this creature makes you want to stay away from them for your safety, but the transparent exterior and the beautiful glow that is created through the darkness of the ocean walls, makes you never want to stop staring at this incredible looking creature.
After discovering this research is when I was inspired and formed my concept for this project, the Dangers of Beauty. When we think of beauty, everyone wants to have it and will do anything to have it. And when you gaze at the appearance of the jellyfish, the beauty of it drawls you closer and closer to it. But the catch is you can’t physically get that close because you are putting yourself at risk to get stung. I wanted relate this to our society and the media today, because they are pushing everyone to reach what they believe is “beautiful”. Changing yourself to fit into this appearance that everyone wants to be because society has convinced us that this specific appearance is the model definition of beauty. But physically trying to get closer and closer to that idealistic beauty can potentially be unhealthy and push you to the edge.
This jellyfish that I created is made out of a homemade mix of transparent silicon and glow in the dark paint covering; Styrofoam, ribbon and silver strands of beads. The silicon is what gives this the “jelly” look, making it appear slimy, then the added glow in the dark paint gives it the natural glow. It is located in a dark room with no windows and is spacious enough for viewers to be interactive with the piece. The darkness of the room is very convincing and makes the glow of the mix shine brighter. Also, the room creates a natural eerie and whistling noise that reminds me of underwater sounds. It is suspended and connected through fishing line and hot glue, and the fishing line is flexible enough so the object is able to make settle motions. I wanted the jellyfish to look like it is actually floating, as a jellyfish would appear in the dark depths of the oceans. The piece starts at the top, which is the Styrofoam head, then the “tentacles” or pasted ribbon and beads are tightly congested with a lot of different pieces towards the bottom of the head, and then expands into longer individual strands of the ribbon and beads at the end.
These pieces, as of a lot of my other pieces, were experiments. I was never sure how my materials were going to work together. I was very unfamiliar with silicon and wasn’t sure if it was going to give the texture I wanted, but I am very pleased with how it turned out in the end. The different textures of the ribbon, Styrofoam and beads give to my perspective a successful contrast then the silicon and paint mix that covers these objects creates this object as one.
