stop. analyse that text through the lens of its author's intentions and original historical context. okay now take the author out back and kill them dead and analyse that text as though it were published by your mutual yesterday and is in direct conversation the contemporary discourse that's most relevant to your life. okay now pick your favorite angle of interpretation and come up with the strongest possible argument against it. now imagine that the text is your best friend and that it means you well and that you naturally give it every benefit of the doubt because you're on its side and you want the best for it. now imagine that the text wants you dead and it'll eat you if you don't eat it first. now pretend that you found this text locked away in a cave with no evidence of when or where it came from and you have to divine its meaning solely through its internal coherence and nothing else. okay now address the elephant in the room aspect of the text you've been ignoring because you find it boring or confusing or uncomfortable and become the number one expert on it. now spend forty minutes assigning all the characters dnd classes with at least three sentences of reasoning each. okay now do the cha cha slide.
Let's Rename the Birds!!! (pt. 10)
As you may already know... ornithological authorities (such as the AOS and ABA) in North America have decided, for a variety of reasons, to rename all of the birds that have been named after people.
Some examples: Lewis's Woodpecker, Smith's Longspur, MacGillivray's Warbler...
I thought it would be fun for us to come up with some ideas for new common names here on Tumblr.
Here are some criteria for re-naming that might appeal to ornithologists and birdwatchers:
Habitat and geographical range
Physical characteristics
Call/song characteristics
Behavior
PLEASE MAKE YOUR NAMING SUGGESTIONS IN THE COMMENTS, REBLOG, OR TAGS.
We'll take the best ideas, and put them in a poll by the end of the week! (I and an esteemed panel of ornithological tumblererrsssres will make the decisions).
WEEK 10 - Harris's Hawk
Harris’s Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus), family Accipitridae, order Accipitrifomes
Called "pueco" in much of Latin America.
Previously called the Bay-winged Hawk, but I didn't want to just default to that.
Found in the SW United States, much of Mexico, western Central America, and parts of South America.
Highly social and gregarious.
Unlike most birds of prey, they are known for hunting in hierarchical packs of 2 - 7 birds, which includes a dominant female, an adult male, the last few years previous offspring, and young unrelated birds.
They prey mainly on small and medium sized mammals, but also take birds, reptiles, and large invertebrates.
The "pack" also helps to raise the dominant pair's chicks.
They nest in small trees, large bushes, and cacti.
Nests have been observed with 1 female and two males, and its possible that they engage in polyandry, but that is debated.
Believed to be one of the more intelligent raptors.
There are 2 subspecies, one found in North America and We and No South America, while the other is found in Ea and So South America.
In the U.S. the bird inhabits mostly desert and sparse arid woodlands, but can also be found in treed wetlands (such as mangrove swamps).
Populations have declined over the last several decades, due to habitat loss. (Regardless, there numbers remain high enough to be conservation classified as "least concern".)
They are non-migratory.

TIME TO VOTE!!!
We had so much input for this one, that we couldn't possibly include all the great suggestions, but thanks to you all for your input.
Regardless of what the AOU or the ABA may have already decided to re-re-name the bird, let's go with our favorite!
Okay, you made your suggestions, and our esteemed panel of judges has weighed in:
@nemertea; @greycatbird, @passerinethehallway; @magpiesmiscellany; @todaysbird, @proton-wobbler, and I!!!
What should we rename the Harris's Hawk?
Bay-winged Hawk
Pueco Hawk
Cinnamon Hawk
Wolf Hawk
Sociable Hawk
Cactus Hawk
Gregarious Hawk
Chestnut-winged Hawk
Ember Hawk
If there is no clear winner (over 25%), then we will have a run-off in a couple of days.
saw a woman talking about how betrayed she felt by her female gyno who really hurt her during a pap smear & claimed the cervix has no nerve endings. & i really do feel for her but also I think this is the problem with people only viewing medical bigotry and abuse as a problem that is the byproduct of other forms of bigotry & not tied to how the medical establishment works inherently.
it's not just "that doctor has internalized misogyny" it's that western medicine is, as in so many parts of our culture, deeply authoritarian. the patient is meant to be a passive problem to be solved by the active doctor. there is meant to be a stark harsh line between you and the doctor, where you are pure of any medical knowledge and simply report the raw data & let the doctor interpret it. this is how the system works. it fucks over marginalized groups the most because that's how marginalization works, but even a thin white abled cis man could get fucked over by this shit if he's unlucky.
female doctors will not save us! trans doctors will not save us! doctors of color will not save us! these are all GOOD things and we DO need more representation in the medical field, it DOES help. but it will not save us. the same goes with teaching as well frankly. these issues cannot be reduced down to simply getting more people from columns B C and D into the same fucked system. nothing can make up for the societal change of heart we really need.
everyone tells me that ADHD isn't an excuse for being lazy and that there are people with ADHD who have overcome their symptoms and are successful but every day I drag around an invisible dopplegänger of myself who is horrible and listless and always complains. and he is so heavy. I'm ambitious and I'm passionate but he isn't and the problem is that to get anywhere in life I have to grab him by the leg and pull him along the whole way, kicking and screaming, and sometimes it gets exhausting. sometimes he pulls me down with him. and it gets a bit difficult to explain to people why I'm lying down on the floor in pain when they can't see him.
I miss when computers and websites were just wildly customizable in ridiculous ways. when I was a kid I was messing around and randomly found a little running horse cursor that was just there for some reason and changed the hourglass to that. and then got yelled at by my dad because he assumed I’d downloaded it off the internet but yknow.
nobody does shit like that anymore. I can’t just put “the 5th moon of jupiter” as my facebook location anymore because they decided to be killjoys so they could stalk people better and windows won’t let you customize your whole interface in stupid ways and they treat their user base like idiots.
like not to be a salty old man but there’s no joy in it anymore I’m just resigned that even if I customize shit I’ll still be forced to install the next mandatory update that will put it all back to its pristine bullshit original state and also break my system volume control for some reason.
Anti-intellectualism is so poisonous and the fact that people think their opinions are just as valid as real academic studies is toxic. There's no amount of arguing you can do to help sometimes, which also sucks.
Liberals and leftists you are not immune to this even though some of you think you are
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.
It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence lies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.
Anyway adults saying “I don’t know isn’t an answer” is part of the reason I learned to lie and bluff so well.
Really though, what was that about? I don’t know is a valid answer. It communicates very clearly that the child cannot answer your question, and therefore maybe needs more help understanding the question/situation. Why do you try and push them to give an answer they don’t have? That stresses them out and it makes them feel like they’re being punished for not knowing something.
i thought i was the only one with an “i don’t know” problem because my parents made it seem it was the strangest and also most horrible thing in the world. i genuinely didn’t know and they got angry and that only blocked my thoughts more which meant i didn’t know the answer to anything else.
THIS ^^^
Also “I don’t know” is a commonly used sentence for children with ADHD/Autism. We DON’T know why we can’t do our homework. We DON’T know why we can’t eat certain foods sometimes. We DON’T know why we forgot to do a chore. It’s really distressing when you genuinely don’t know and people think you’re just lying or indifferent
A Tennessee library board has voted to remove its top librarian after she refused to carry out an order to relocate more than 100 LGBTQ-them
Article date: April 1, 2026
From the article:
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — A Tennessee library board has voted to remove its top librarian after she refused to carry out an order to relocate more than 100 LGBTQ-themed books. The Rutherford County Library Board voted 8-3 Monday night to fire library system director Luanne James. The decision followed a dispute over moving the books from the children’s section to the adult section. Board members said the material promotes “gender confusion.” James had pushed back on that directive, saying the move would violate First Amendment protections and go against her professional responsibility. “I stand by my decision and I will not change my mind,” James said during the meeting. After the vote, her attorney read a statement on her behalf calling the firing unlawful. “Librarians should not be used as a filter for political agendas,” the statement said. “I stood up for the right to read, standing for the citizens of Rutherford County.”
