Spring joint: when you have the slightest of gaps at the center of two edge jointed boards. Some woodworkers induce the spring joint with their jointer setup or with their jointing technique. The theory being, when you pull the joint tight at glueup, the ends will be guaranteed extra tight. Hopefully this avoids any future issues with the end of the joints opening due to greater moisture movement at the end grain. It's easy to get overwhelmed by all of the perfect furniture and woodworking projects floating around on social media. Let them be your inspiration and motivation not your frustration and insecurity. For now, build what you need, where you are, with the skills and tools you currently have. Slowly, over time you'll end up with a house full of your furniture that documents your woodworking journey. This table was supposed to be a quick, temporary kitchen island. Twenty years later, I'm cleaning it up for the new owners of our house - they asked if the table could convey. I built this from 2x4s and 1xs. You can still see the construction grade stamp on one board. It's covered with water stains because I never even put a coat of finish on the base. One mortise and tenon joint has failed due to being glue-starved. The top was scrap from a local company that made tractor trailer decking. Hey Woodworkers, It's official. We have another opportunity to share our woodworking skills with our community. I will be working in conjunction with Tedd Batt, Director of Visual Arts, at The Academy Center of the Arts to curate a show dedicated to our craft. The show will be in the Ann White Academy Gallery during the month of July. Opening night will be Friday, July 5th and there will be an opening night reception. We are looking for a wide variety of wood-based objects including, but not limited to furniture, turnings, boxes, sculpture, and anything else that displays the talents of our local artisans. We will not post prices during the show in an effort to maintain the look and feel of a true art exhibition as opposed to a craft fair. Hey locals, the May meeting of the Central VA Woodworkers Guild week be held next Thursday (5/2) at Richard McGann's shop. Meeting starts at 7:30. Hey carvers, turners, box makers and adventurous woodworkers, I have a load of 8/4 basswood on the racks. Harder than white pine but softer than poplar makes it easy to work. Consistent grain is subdued but beautiful. Very lightweight. Picked up some stickers and old sycamore from my buddy Kyle @fallingacorn. There was some crazy beautiful wood waiting to be turned into crazy beautiful timberframe homes. We had outgrown my old Abrams style clamp rack (not all the clamps are on it in the picture) so I started throwing together a duplicate. Didn't like how it looked so I decided to try using the plywood leg blanks to keep all the shop furniture consistent and easy. Went a little bigger and added shelving to hold glue-up supplies. I think it'll work. Now I need to build a second one. Big shop or little shop, it's hard to have too many rolling carts. A quick sanding and these are ready for @davidmahler and @joshuaehrmann to put to good use.
