for the halloween masquerade poppy decided to go for something simple yet timeless. romeo and juliet was one of her favorite plays growing up despite a morbid ending and question character choices. juliet capulet is her choice of costume for the event. you might not understand who is she as first glance, but once she tells you you won’t be able to picture anyone else as the fair juliet. @malnatimedia

@masoncdavis​ — “hey!” poppy waved through the glass windows of the gym. she had been taking a bit of a break from working at home to stretch her legs. she noticed mason working out in the gym as she walked, so she figured a quick chat wouldn’t hurt anyone. besides, you can’t work out all the time... can you?  to find out for herself poppy poked her head into the room to stop and talk to her sort of friend for a quick gab. “so are you going to the magic show tonight? it’s not really my thing, but a lot of the others are going to it. —oh or do you think you’ll get to volunteer?” she clapped her hands together in excitement. “maybe he’ll even cut you in half.” she teased with a light laugh.

☁ In the middle of a snowstorm, the power goes out. And it’s getting cold. (ruby)

“don’t worry rubs, we have a fireplace. i’ll just find a lighter or some mat...” she looked at her drawer of miscellaneous items she had in her kitchen only to find no lighter and the box of matches empty. “hm, well this is certainly a problem. I was a girl scout in middle school and they taught me how to start a fire without any but I was in the forrest and there were a lot of sticks around.” poppy tapped her finger to her chin in thought of what to do next. as an epiphany striked her she ran into the other room grabbing her comforter and tossing it at the blonde who was waiting patiently in the living room. before ruby had a chance to thank her for the blanket poppy was off again running to her roommate’s room and finding a lighter. —she knew he would have one somewhere in his room, although she did normally try to avoid his room at all costs due to privacy, but it was an emergency. “much better.” poppy sighed moments later as the two girls had a lit fireplace and were snuggled in poppy’s comforter. “next time it’s winter we should just fly to the beach instead. much less troublesome.”

Do you enjoy horror movies/literature/games? // Did you grow up with any Halloween traditions? (like decorating the house or carving pumpkins, etc)

poppy never has been into anything scary. no horror or thriller has ever been something that entertained her. she much rather preferred movies and books with happy endings. although not as realistic as some of the thrillers she had seen sometimes she just wanted the unrealistic, cheesy happy ending that was guaranteed at the end of a romantic comedy.

poppy’s father, tommy, was very big on halloween. they would not only spend extra time decorating the house but they would always carve the best pumpkins. when poppy was younger the two would have matching halloween costume that would coordinate the theme they had decided on, but that only lasted until about thirteen when poppy wanted to go to halloween ‘parties’ with her friends instead.

long before poppy ever decided to become a lawyer or even thought about law school she was just a young girl who decided that she wanted to dress as a judge— like one of her favorite show. she watched the amanda show religiously when she was younger and she loved dressing as judge trudy. her father dressed as the dancing lobster. it was a very cute costume and they got a lot of compliments on it from the kids in her neighborhood.

POPPY HILL’S FAMILY TREE:

THOMAS “TOMMY” HILL — 52 ( HUGH JACKMAN )

after sarah ran out on the hill family, thomas opened an auto mechanic shop employing people who were trying to get back out into the community after experiencing life’s cruelties. ten years after sarah ran out thomas met lily and fell in love. the two got married shortly after. poppy’s father is currently serving a forty-five year sentence for a crime he didn’t commit. leaving poppy heartbroken.

SARAH HALL ( FORMERLY HILL ) — 56 ( DEMI MOORE )

sarah was unable to fill the mother/wife roll that thomas and poppy needed so she ran off shortly after poppy was born. she remembers little of her and her father never mentions her. after filling divorce papers they have little to no information about her whereabouts. they believe she is currently in nevada.

LILY WALLANCE-HILL — 51 ( LAURA DERN )

after the sudden heath of her first husband, lily never thought she would fall in love again, but after being set up on a blind date with thomas that thought flew out the window. the two fell in love instantly and still remain close even through his sentencing. she helped raise poppy and her daughter laura while thomas was in prision without a second thought. poppy views her as her real mother.

LAURA WALLANCE — 24 ( FLORENCE PUGH )

dealing with the death of her father was rough enough, but things were starting to look up when her mother married thomas. she had another father figure around and a sister whom she grew quite close to. she began to come out of her shell, only for thomas to get sent to prison. now she is trying to figure out how to get close to someone again, because in her mind— people always leave. the only person she can trust is her mother. her and poppy were close, but laura has been pushing her away.

Finn often spent lots of time in the lobby because he didn’t like to feel cooped up in his room all the time. So it wasn’t necessarily weird for him to be sitting beside a stranger, both of them scrolling on their phones, in the lobby. He’s a little nosy, so he’s glanced over and seen that she was looking at cats, but that’s as far as he’ll let himself go. He doesn’t look at her phone screen again until she’s pointed it at them, telling him to look at all of the cats on the page. He’d heard her question moments ago, so he answers her with a nod and a chuckle. “Yes, I think you’d get in trouble for having twelve cats. I think you should actually go to the shelter and meet some of them, see if there’s one you bond with and that bonds with you.” He suggests, smiling. He had never adopted a pet on his own before but when he was in high school his parents let him help pick out the family pet from a local shelter. 

“oh my gosh you’re right! I should go to the shelter.” poppy looked down at her watch. she had planned on getting some work done, but what’s the point of having a day off if you end up just working from home. “all i’m looking for is a cat that is independent enough to where it’s content being by itself while i’m off at work, but will cuddle me as soon as I get home. do you think that will be difficult to find?” she asked the stranger again as she scrolled through the pictures once more. “oh—” poppy hit his arm playfully to grab his attention again. “—this one’s name is milton!” she shoved the phone in front of his face again to show off the cutest cat she’d ever seen. “what a cute little old man name! —also... am I bothering you? sorry, I just am getting really excited about getting a pet.”

mason was just wanting to get to work and get the day over with so he could go back to his room and watch some movies. as he was walking to the gym for work. “i am sure they wouldn’t let you have twelve cats, but maybe one or two? can we even have animals here?”

“well, yeah, i guess twelve cats would be kind of ridiculous.” she laughed lightly before pausing on a particular cat. “we can have pets here. I know a couple of different people that have do— unless maybe they’re keeping them here illegally, but I feel like I see them too often for them to be hidden pets.” she placed the phone in front of him once more to show him another cat that was able to be adopted. “I think this one kind of looks like you.”

poppy huffed as she scrolled through pictures on her phone in the lobby. she had been feeling quite lonely as of late and her step mother suggested she get a cat. —she wasn’t sure she had the time for a pet seeing as she was always so busy with work, but diana had assured her that cats required very minimal effort. her very practical outlook on the situation changed drastically when she got on the humane society website for adoptable cats and kittens. “oh my gosh these are all so cute!” she squealed as she scrolled through the multiple different pictures of cats ranging from old and grouchy to small and sleepy.  “this one doesn’t have a tail! and this one is blind in one eye! do you think I would get in trouble for having twelve cats in my apartment?” she asked the person sitting beside her as she flashed her screen full of cats at them. “I mean look at these faces— you can’t help but want them all right?”

poppy hill was born in less than ideal circumstances. her parents were both suffering from addiction and were living as close to homelessness as possible while still actually renting what some could call an apartment. their parents had written them off and they were in no shape to raise a child. or at least— that’s what everyone thought. with more than one criminal records on the files no one thought the hills would make it. just another kid thrown into the system due to irresponsible parents. that is where tommy and sarah hill differed. when they found out they were expecting they did everything they could to stay clean. going to meeting and getting stable jobs. they turned their cheek at their troublemaking ways to start anew for their tiny bundle of joy. everything seemed great at the beginning. they began reconnecting with family they hadn’t spoken to in years and we’re looking into buying their first home by the time poppy was starting kindergarten. but as you can imagine things didn’t stay happy for long. 

tommy hill had always been a stubborn man. harden by his time living with a poorer family in a rough neighbor in chicago he did whatever he wanted and never apologized for anything. when he put his mind to something that was it. sarah on the other hand was not the same way. she was easily persuaded and pressured into things she was not ready for. as poppy grew older staying clean stuck for her father while her mother returned to old habits as the pressure of parenthood grew too much for her to handle. by the time poppy had finished grade school her mother had run off leaving her father to raise a young girl through the most difficult time of their life: puberty. although challenging he was ready to step up to the plate. he moved up the ladder as an auto mechanic and eventually made enough to run his own shop, choosing to hire parolees or recently released people looking to start fresh like he had once before. 

poppy and her father were very close. although no one had expected tommy hill to turn his life around it was starting to look like it. his shop was doing well, poppy was becoming an intelligent and beautiful young women and he had recently got married to a wonderful women who poppy viewed as her mother figure. but on january 17, 2002 tragedy struck the hill house once more. while working at the shop the police arrived asking about a stolen vehicle on his property. tommy explained to the officers what happened, that one of the parolees had brought it to have mr. hill fix in his off time and he agreed unknowing that it was stolen, but they didn’t believe him. with no proof ‘real’ proof to support his case and a file of past charges tommy hill was sentenced to 45 years in prison with no chance of parole. poppy was devastated. she knew her father had nothing to do with the car being stolen, yet he was being punished for it regardless. that is when she decided that she was going to beat the system. work to help people like her father that were wrongly accused of crimes because of their criminal backgrounds. not everyone with bad pasts were bad people. some just wanted a new start just like her father. so she continued to get good grades and ended up attending one of the best law schools in the area.

now she is working at a high paying law firm working around the clock to be the best lawyer she can be. no one at the firm takes her seriously so she works ten times harder to get half the credit. poppy is a spunky, ambitious girl who is ( what I would call ) a messy perfectionist. so droned into her work that other areas of her life are irrelevant such as picking up her room, eating and especially dating. work is her main focus but lately she feels as though something is missing in her life. she’s just not sure what it is.
