“Matter, life, and mind are often treated as separate entities. Matter is imagined as an exterior substance, life as organised animation, mind as inward experience. The difficulty is then to explain how one could ever pass from the first to the second, and from the second to the third. The transitions begin to seem miraculous because the starting picture has already divided reality too sharply.
A better approach is to ask whether matter, life, and mind may be different disclosures of one reality under different forms of organisation. Matter is reality under the aspect of measurable structure, force, relation, extension, and law. Life is reality under the aspect of self-maintaining organisation, metabolism, adaptation, vulnerability, and reproduction. Mind is reality under the aspect of inward presence, experience, meaning, and world-disclosure.
This does not mean that stones secretly think, or that consciousness can be cheaply projected everywhere. It means that the later forms should not be treated as alien intrusions into an otherwise dead universe. If reality gives rise to life and mind, then life and mind must belong among its possibilities. They reveal something about what reality can become under certain conditions.
Life is already more than inert arrangement. The living body maintains itself by exchange. It takes in, transforms, repairs, responds, and resists dissolution for a time. It is not outside matter, but matter organised in a new mode. Its form is not static. It persists by activity. A living being is a pattern of ongoing self-maintenance.
Mind intensifies this inwardness. In conscious life, reality is no longer only arranged from outside. It is present to itself in some mode. There is feeling, perception, appetite, memory, fear, attention, and eventually reflection. A world appears. Things matter. The organism does not merely occupy an environment; it inhabits a meaningful field.
Human mind brings further articulations: language, self-consciousness, moral reflection, symbolic imagination, mathematics, art, prayer, and philosophy. These are not detachable ornaments. They are ways reality becomes explicit through finite beings capable of disclosure.
The danger is to turn this sequence into a crude hierarchy of superiority. Matter is not unreal because life arises from it. Life is not merely a stepping stone to mind. Mind is not free from the body that sustains it. Each level preserves and transforms what precedes it. The higher depends upon the lower, but the lower does not exhaust the higher.
This also means that human beings should not imagine themselves as minds accidentally trapped in matter. Embodiment is not a fall from reality into alien substance. It is the condition under which inwardness becomes situated, vulnerable, active, and relational. Mind without body would not be human mind. It would lack the very conditions that give human experience its texture: touch, hunger, fatigue, speech, gesture, birth, dependency, labour, and mortality.
At the same time, the inward cannot be dismissed as merely external arrangement seen incompletely. Consciousness is not captured by describing only what can be observed from outside. The first-personal fact remains. The world appears. Pain hurts. Beauty moves. Thought understands. These are not errors in reality. They are reality disclosed inwardly.
Matter, life, and mind are therefore not three unrelated substances. They are distinguishable orders within one generative whole. Matter gives structure. Life gives organised self-maintenance. Mind gives presence, world, and meaning.
The real is not diminished as it becomes inward. It becomes more fully disclosed.”
