The specification was renamed as HTML 5 and created the first working draft of the new specification in 2007. Since then W3C and WHATWG have maintained separate but almost identical specifications releasing new drafts incrementally.

The first draft of HTML5 was written and introduced by Ian Hickson but changes are still coming. Experts say that HTML5 is continually evolving technology that will never have 'THE END'

In 2008, the editor of HTML 5, Ian Hickson gave a now famous interview with Tech Republic where he laid out his vision for the timeline of HTML 5. By Hickson's estimation HTML 5 would issue a Last Call in 2009, issue a Candidate recommendation around 2012 and finish testing around 2020. Now the real eye brow raiser was Ian stating he envisioned HTML 5 reaching Recommendation status in 2022.

This statement surprised everyone.
