wiki entries and the descriptions for reprints really focus on the fact that lucifer retired and opened a piano bar, but in the actual series it's virtually a non factor. you see it function in the morningstar option graphic novel and in the first arc or so of the ongoing series, but it after lucifer creates his universe it just becomes what his infinitely sprawling palace looks like as a physical space on earth. it becomes a square stone building with no doors or windows. even in collections of lucifer issues after #20, they still put piano bar on the back. it's really funny to me. I use it here because it's a way to generate interactions but it's just not important to his series whatsoever.

conformity. such a small, such a human, concern. for the 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑, no concern at all. many celestial upstarts followed in the archangel's footsteps, but none could quite follow the map. when the universe was his screen, it made for good television.

despite appearances, I do think lucifer is respectful of superheroes. he does think that they're melodramatic, small, probably full of psychosexual complexes, but he does respect one thing: a good crisis. whether it's the anti-monitor collapsing the multiverse, hal jordan trying to retcon time, superboy prime speedbagging reality, or barry allen ruining everything, lucifer saw it. he saw it, smiled, and opened the bottle of the '47--- a good year for special occasions. it takes a special talent to be able to batter god's creation into whatever it needs to be at the time.

now that I've had a few days to poke around the DC community and see what's up and who's around, I have some thoughts on what I want to do here. first of all, there's more of you than I expected! that's awesome. it makes me want to pick up a more typical DC character that can play around in ways lucifer can't. for lucifer specifically, I'm going to be more selective than usual. if I can't easily see how an interaction might happen, I may not follow.

lucifer, like a lot of the vertigo characters, is more of a catalyst for stories around him. there are issues of lucifer's series that he isn't in, or may only have a page or two in. if there's something you want to resolve for your character, lucifer could be useful for making it happen. lucifer as a catalyst for the character development of others is a big draw for me.

while some might be surprised by a meeting like this, hal had known that this chat with the devil had been a long time coming. he knew nothing of the space or time they'd meet, or the circumstances that would bring them together [ ... ] just that it was written into the fate he'd chosen for himself, the many moons ago that he'd decided to play judge, jury, and executioner.

the devil looked nothing of how he'd initially pictured, in all his years between religions. though, when he had chosen to play god, he was simply a human man ⸻ so it was far from surprising. everyone toted that the devil came bearing a disguise, and this merely solidified the truth in that statement.

❛ i think i have an idea. ❜ he replied, voice calm and collected. he wasn't sure what was going to come of this meeting [ ... ] if this was the end of the line for the once pure hero known as green lantern, or merely a chance to acknowledge the existence and the presence of the devil himself. ❛ i've always known it would all catch up to me someday, just wasn't sure when. ❜

surprisingly, his lack of fear wasn't just a display of his indomitable willpower, nor the need to overcome it. it was acceptance. though, when the blood of billions was dripping from your fingertips, there was little that one could get away with. this alone made him no different than the killers described in documentaries, locked behind bars for the rest of their days. the only difference was that the majority of the world didn't know of the grim history of the hero they chose to represent them, to save them.

❛ are you going to kill me? ❜ his voice was steady, expression unchanging.

❝ it's always melodrama with your lot. ❞ 𝐋𝐔𝐂𝐈𝐅𝐄𝐑'𝐒 tongue clicked twice with something like disappointment. once, for the headful of misconceptions on the green lantern's shoulders, twice for the lack of kneeling and begging that those misconceptions demanded. his head shook. ❝ I do not cause evil. what I do exists above and beyond any mortal conception of right and wrong. I do not compel others to do evil. souls came to me pre-damned by heavenly bureaucrats, and I did the rest. I was damned good at it. was. ❞

the devil was in the details. now retired from his post as the lord of effrul, it was only in his twilight infinity that 𝐋𝐔𝐂𝐈𝐅𝐄𝐑 had the time to do whatever he pleased. open a piano bar. birth a new universe. take the green lantern on a casual stroll in the edges where the so called laws of reality began to fray. it was important to stay active at this stage of life.

❝ could it be that I'm just looking to chat? ❞ while 𝐋𝐔𝐂𝐈𝐅𝐄𝐑 never told lies, as they were beneath a being of his station, he dealt in understatement like a blackjack dealer. this was many things to the angel. an assessment. an interview. perhaps a moving piece on his multiversal chessboard, should he see the greater game take shape.

his opening move, a question. ❝ when you took the power of god into your hands, to bend time in all the ways to make your fantasy world come true, how did it all look to you? how was the view from above? ❞

ᡕᠵデᡁ᠊╾━ ┈⌯⁍𖦏 Jason was going to stroll right past him. His jacket pulled up tight. Two strangers in the night. He nearly startles out of his skin when the voice crawls forward. It stills him as well as a bear trap would. Shock quickly spills into anger.

Eyes were alight with irritation. He stares at the being like a chained dog. Unmoved from his spot but willing the stranger closer for an excuse to cause him harm. It felt like a dream. Flowery words that made no sense. DISAPPOINTED? What right did the other have to speak about him. He did not think small. He had big big big plans. The current one was just personal.

His eyes pin the stranger as head tosses high.

❝ No one knows who I am. How do you? ❞ He growls out. Maybe someone sent by Talia?

❝ if I told you, you would not believe me. ❞ 𝐋𝐔𝐂𝐈𝐅𝐄𝐑 did not lie, and did not begin doing so. ❝ so I will forgive the barking. ❞ it was obvious to anyone, though, that the tuxedoed night stroller was no gotham gadfly who had lost his way. he strolled with purpose, a perfect stride.

the comings and goings of costumed characters were of interest to the host and its angels when the need arose. none could cross the veil of life and death and back again without them taking notice, & none were ever truly unseen again once it happened. the angels abandoned jason todd in that warehouse. but that was when 𝐋𝐔𝐂𝐈𝐅𝐄𝐑 had taken notice.

❝ I am not a part of your little game of cops & robbers, if you are wondering. much too crowded. far too melodramatic. ❞ the angel drew an ornate cigarette case from the depths of his evening jacket, & selected himself an equally ornate smoke. it ignited the moment it touched his lips.

❝ if fake names are what you would prefer, you may call me... sam. ❞ smoke swirled from his lips into impossible shapes, drifting into and through invisible planes. ❝ you are a special young man, you know. the man upstairs is furious when one of you comes back. it mocks his design. I approve. ❞

in the light of a dying star, the devil & the ring-bearer strode together in the cosmic void. the darkness of the thing-between-things, forged to stone beneath their feet by the endless will of the archangel. even the sound of his footsteps, fine leather on stone, was his own artificial creation. stones mortared & laid themselves one by one with each of their steps, stepping stones into the great unknown, well beyond the scope of sector @2814s. the 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑 did not draw hal jordan, the champion of the guardians of oa, to this space to demonstrate will. no. this chat had been a long time coming.

❝ we have more in common than you may think, mister jordan. ❞ the angel's voice is cool to the touch, diplomatic. earthmen would know his accent as english. ❝ we both trade in will & light. the wrath of god, for a time, as well. ❞ the devil withdrew a hand from the deep pockets of his tuxedo trousers. it drew into a pinch, a small flickering flame glowing where his fingers drew together.

❝ you have followed more closely in my footsteps than than most mortals would ever dare. ❞ his fingers opened. the flame went out. the true purpose of this little display came to light. the green lantern had followed him for near fifty stones now.
