Hi been a hisoillu fan girl since 2016, life kept me busy from my fan girl era lmao it's been a while but now am back I heard it became canon can you please give me a quick recap on what've missed? Thank u

First of all, hello and welcome back to the fandom! I hope you’ll have a great time here this time around and discover lots of things to love among all the hisoillu-themed creations out there!

So, this is definitely a multi-layered question! Apart from all the nuances in Hisoka and Illumi interactions that we see in the anime - which make it clear that, one way or another, they share a bond, even if it’s not explained straightforwardly what type of bond it is - the canon reference actually comes from the manga. And here’s a heads-up: there are some manga spoilers concerning Hisoka/Illumi relationship further on!

In the manga, we get this specific panel that was a total game-changer for us hisoillu shippers (and for a lot of people in general, we think) Here it is:

You’ll find quite a lot of analysis of that panel alone in the fandom spaces, with many insightful takes on it, so we encourage you to look around for them. The discourse about whether it’s 100% canon or not is still ongoing, and there isn’t one definitive answer- since as usually with Togashi, a lot of things are subtle and left up to interpretation. There are also many discussions about the language and used translation. Some people argue that what Illumi say there, isn’t said in a romantic context at all, but we, the Hisoillu Weekend team, personally believe the terms used aren’t there by chance.

How you choose to interpret it, though, is completely up to you in the end!
