Hello!

This is a sideblog of @lordsecretary specifically for me to yap about historical stuff.

I cover Croatian history (especially focusing on continental Croatia during the union with Hungary, the Republic of Dubrovnik up to 1808 but mainly the 18th century, as well as the Dalmatian coastal communes up until about 1795), Venetian history (particularly related to the Stato da Mar and the workings of the central government and chancellery, not so much the Domini di Terraferma, although I've been reading a bit more about Friuli lately), Hungarian history (in conjunction with continental Croatia as above), New Brunswick history (mainly Charlotte County), and just about anything else I happen to run across that interests me. I was really into Louis XIV-era France several years ago, so some stuff related to that will probably float in too.

Gonna start volunteering at the county archive, which I'm really looking forward to

At this point I should just write my own historical rpf fiction novel about the Hunyadis. If Bán Mór and his insanely sexist writing could get a book deal and a series then so can I. Right? Right, no.

reading my 1802 copy of Laurence Sterne's sermons

it has pictures!

I've got the whole Tristram Shandy in this set too, I need to finish that some time

got volumes 1-3 and then 5... 4, 6, 7 were nowhere to be found when I made my purchase, sadly

1-3 is thankfully the entirety of Tristram Shandy, 5 is all sermons although I don't know if there would be more

I think A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy was what was in volume 4, which I'm rather sad to not have because I read it first online years ago

His letters would've been in volume 7, and 6 if the sermons are just in 5

It's fun reading these, because there are times they clearly missed a long s when switching over to just using the short one

Some previous owner, Horace Newland, some Victorian I imagine, had his name stamped inside the cover leaves in each book in a nice gothic font, in purple ink!

I'm wondering if he also may have been responsible for blacking out some parts of Tristram Shandy in ink, affronts to his delicate sensibilities or something of the sort

Also apparently wanted to extract the nice marbled page in Tristram Shandy, because the back half of it is mostly ripped out, although thankfully he realized he wasn't getting anywhere with it and left the front side untouched

It's a nice set otherwise, not sure what the binding material is, I'm not well versed enough. Got lots of nice gilded details (although my 1748 copy of Alexander Pope's Essay on Man is supremely gilded in comparison)
