You ran weeping through the school corridors. It was time to go home, yet at that moment, you didn't want to return at all. This could well be described as the worst day of your life; you just wanted to run aimlessly, to tire out your legs until you collapsed to the ground in despair.
You push your way past the few students who hadn't leave yet and head up the stairs to a bathroom. You lock yourself inside in and continue to let out all your sadness. Meanwhile, constant notifications kept making your phone vibrate. It was undoubtedly that bastard—your now ex-boyfriend—texting you, reminding you what a coward you were for running off instead of listening to his usual insults. You’d had enough for one day and didn't want to look at any messages from him.
You had just broken up with your now ex-boyfriend. You had been together for at least eight months; things started off well—he was kind, took you out to eat, and made you feel important and like a princess—but it was all a mask. After the first two months, he revealed his true colors: a manipulator, lazy and indifferent to everything but himself, who began judging your every move. He told you what to wear, how to behave, what to do, and how to respond to the guys who spoke to you in class. At first, you went along with it because you were so in love; to you, he was the perfect guy you had always dreamed of, and you viewed his behavior as just a temporary phase... until you got used to it.
He began to show disdain whenever you spoke with Kou, Nene, or even the teachers. He started criticizing and scolding you for your odd behavior—like talking to yourself and cleaning the girls' bathroom alongside Nene. You were always absent from the little gatherings the four of you—you, Nene, Kou and Hanako—usually held, because your boyfriend demanded your presence before afternoon classes began. Nene got worried, as did Hanako, who often found this behavior unusual. But you never listened to them.
He began to insist that, in the future, you would have to take care of him and your children, and that your future marriage would bring wealth to both your families. He had mapped out his plans for the future without ever listening to yours. Then came the physical abuse—the slaps, the rough yanking of your arms and hair. You thought he didn't like you anymore, that you were stupid compared to him. You were afraid of being left alone—afraid that the boy you had dreamed of so much would tell you how useless you were and that he no longer desired you.
You tried to push yourself: to be nicer to him, to be there when he called, to satisfy his every request. But when you were at your breaking point, he didn't care. You would arrive at school with small marks on your arms and a flushed cheek.
Meanwhile, your parents insisted you stay in the relationship for the sake of the family and the wealth you stood to gain. They told you to overlook his behavior—claiming that every husband eventually acts that way toward his wife from time to time, or simply when she wasn't "enough." Those words hit you hard in the gut. You weren't enough.
You didn't know what else to do but endure it and hope that, perhaps the next day, he would treat you better. Meanwhile, you envied other couples at school—you would look at what you envied, and even that annoyed him; he would scold you, saying you were comparing yourself to others over silly, childish things. You were particularly tired today and just wanted to go home instead of going out with him, but you forced yourself to go, he had already started in with the day's first criticisms, and eventually, they became too much, causing you to lose your temper. You got into an argument, he slapped you twice and then started laughing at you, refusing to listen to your problems and choosing instead to downplay them. You threatened to leave him—thinking that might make him listen—but it didn't; he only became more aggressive, until finally, you ran away, screaming that you never wanted to see him again.
He threatened to tell your whole family—to make you pay for humiliating him right there in the street. Not to mention the insults he hurled while trying to follow you: how awful you looked when you cried, how terrible you dress, the way you spoke, and how stupid you were compared to him. And profanity was a staple of his vocabulary:
"Spineless bitch"
"You look like a whore"
"I’d break those filthy bitch fingers of yours if you touched another male."
"You sound stupid when you talk to others."
"You're a fucking lunatic! Stop talking to the walls, or I'll make you bleed on that wall."
"Cover yourself up, or else the other guys will pounce on you—and then how am I supposed to stop them?!"
"You're sweeter when you're quiet."
"You're only more beautiful when I say so."
"You'll come back to me, because otherwise your family will realize what a slut you are for dumping me."
These were only half of what you endured every day. You didn't know what to do, whom to call, or how to face the day ahead. You were afraid to show up at home with that news, afraid to go to school because of the rumors that would spread, and afraid of what he might do to ruin your life. You just wanted to disappear, to turn to ash and avoid meeting anyone's gaze.
Your tears keep falling and your sobs grow louder, no matter how hard you try to stifle them. Then, a knock at the door, you are startled and look toward it as you sniffle.
"It's occupied..." you managed to say, continuing to look at the floor.
"You know you're in my bathroom, right?" A male voice makes you realize it instantly. Hands as cold as snow cup your face. It was Hanako. "Why are you crying, y/n? What happened?" His face showed genuine concern; he brushed his thumb against your aching cheek, and you tried to look him in the eye, but ended up throwing yourself against him. His arms wrapped around you, and your sobbing didn't stop.
"I-I'm sorry..." you said between sobs. "It's my fault! I sh-shouldn't have..." You buried your face in his neck. Hanako's grip tightened.
"What do you mean?" His voice is low and comforting. Hanako was deeply worried—so much so that he felt guilty about your pain, unable to figure out how to get a handle on it. You slowly pulled away from him, took his cold hands in yours, and pressed them against your forehead. Hanako looked confused but let you do it. Your heart kept pounding relentlessly, and your breathing grew increasingly ragged. You had reached your breaking point, and the only available option lay right before you.
"Hanako-san, Hanako-san... please, end my life..." More tears fell, and Hanako froze right in front of you. Why on earth would one of his assistants wish for death? Who could have driven her in this state? These were the questions swirling in the ghost's mind.
"No, no, no..." he said, pulling you close again—but this time, leaving you no way to break free. "Don't say that, y/n—please, don't mess with me like that" He tried to make light of it, but seeing your state, his faint smile vanished instantly. He held you in a long embrace; it was a kind of contact you hadn't experienced in months—something you had almost missed.
"Hanako kun... why am I not good enough? Why can't I be beautiful? Or smart and charming? Why am I just a stupid whore instead of a good girlfriend...?" Your words make Hanako look into your eyes, now red and tear-filled.
"Who the hell told you that? And why is your cheek hurt?" You couldn't bring yourself to answer, but Hanako realized that someone out there was hurting you. You stayed in that bathroom for what felt like an eternity, sobbing in Hanako's arms—you were like a fountain, the very thing he had always hated. "Shhh, it's okay, y/n, it's okay"—Hanako's comforting voice filled your mind as he spoke into your ear. You felt his hand stroking your head, and in that moment, time stood still for you—and no, it wasn't because of Mystery Number One, nor was it Akane's doing.
"Y/n!!" Yashiro's voice echoed through the bathroom, accompanied by the sound of her footsteps. You had only heard the bathroom door open and Yashiro fall silent for a few seconds. Hanako’s gaze toward his assistant had been enough to heighten your friend's concern. You didn't pull away from Hanako for even a second; you didn't even want to look into your friend's eyes—who knows what she might have heard...
"Y/n, what happened? Aoi saw you crying." It took a couple of minutes to try and calm you down. Yashiro and Hanako listened as you spoke, and Kou arrived while you were talking. Gathering in the girls' bathroom of the old building had become a habit by now. The young exorcist helped tend to your hurt cheek, having grown accustomed to treating his older brother's injuries. You managed to recount what had happened with your ex-boyfriend—the argument, the slaps, the insults, and those eight months of confusion and self-loathing.
"I knew that guy spelled trouble" mutters Hanako, looking wary.
"That piece of shit did this to you? How could he?" exclaims Kou, gripping his Raiteijou in one hand.
"But he really seemed like a nice guy... how is that possible?" The story frightened Yashiro.
"Not everyone is Prince Charming, Yashiro," Hanako interjects. "Some of them are just scum destined only to cause harm." He was quite serious—you don't think you've ever seen him like this. Your cheek is less sore thanks to the cold water.
"Now he's threatening to tell my parents and make me pay for it..." you confessed. You were scared, and you couldn't hide it.
"It won't do anything to you, Senpai! Don't worry, we're here with you" Kou encourages you.
"Exactly! That monster isn't all that popular, no one is going to listen to his ramblings, and you’ve got a team with you." Their encouraging words almost made you smile, yet they were making it sound too easy.
"Don't rush things, she needs to recover—she's still shaken." Hanako's arms wrap around you from behind, and you feel a strange warmth.
"But we can't just do nothing!"
"Exactly, Hanako kun—leave it to us!" Kou and Yashiro look at each other, and their eyes light up with hope.
"We'll be right back!" the two of them shout in unison before leaving the bathroom. You didn't know what they had in mind, you didn't know what to think, you only knew that now you were alone with Hanako.
"Can you explain to me why you wanted to die?" Hanako was serious, melancholy voice tugs at your heartstrings. You turn toward him, your gaze fixed on the floor.
"Because it’s my fault all this happened... it’s my fault he hit me, insulted me, that we fought, that I’m disappointing my family. I’ve never managed to do anything right, I’ve ruined everything! I’m not beautiful, or smart, or even remotely interesting—it’s all my fault..." You start crying again. "...so why go on existing if I’m incapable of doing anything? Not even finding love?" Your legs are trembling, threatening to give way. Hanako cups your face in his hands.
"Don't talk nonsense, don't let that guy put such absurd thoughts in your head. Don't blame yourself for something you never had any control over." His cold thumbs caressed your warm skin. "I don't know how anyone could treat a poor girl like that, I wouldn't even dream of laying a finger on you." Your heart skipped a beat, and you swore you saw a strange glint in his eyes. "I can treat you better than that filthy worm." It sounded almost like a threat—but not directed at you.
"Huh?" you managed to say.
"Let me show you how someone who really loves you treat you" he says in a whisper, and you notice his cheeks turning pink. That warmth spreads through your chest, and you don't know how to respond. He gives a faint smile and presses his lips to your forehead. "That's to cheer you up." Before you have time to react, Yashiro and Kou come running back, shouting.
"Cancel whatever plans you have for this evening, because tonight you're coming with us for a slumber party!" exclaims Yashiro.
"Exactly! I asked Teru-nii to invite you, Senpai (Yashiro), Aoi, and Akane-senpai!" Kou looked proud of what he’d done.
"It was the least I could do to cheer up a sweet girl like you." Teru's elegant voice makes you look up from behind your two friends. Hanako kun positions himself behind you, clearly displeased by the exorcist's presence.
"Thanks, but you shouldn't have..." you manage to say, trying to smile. Teru shakes his head.
"Don't worry, I'm happy to invite my little brother's friends over" he says, stepping closer and showing his kindness—all while Yashiro finds herself unable to tear her eyes away from Senpai Minamoto. "We'll make sure to cheer you up tonight, and I'll step in if anything bad happens at school or is directed at you" he adds with a gentle smile. Like a good president will do. The two of them must have already told him everything...
You opened your phone to let your parents know, but messages from them were already waiting for you, telling you not to come home that night, they didn't want to speak to you. Your mother had no intention of confronting you, and neither did your father. You texted your mother saying you would spend the night at Minamoto's, but she never replied.
Your chat with your ex, on the other hand, was full of messages. It was dinnertime, and Aoi came over and asked if you were okay. She saw the messages and strongly advised you to block him, so that’s what you did.
"Don't listen to what he says—I know it's hard, and I can't imagine what you've been through, but that person doesn't deserve to torment you." Aoi squeezes your hand and smile gently. "Let's go over there with the others." And so you did. You arrived with the group, wearing pajamas borrowed from Yashiro, you had a few bandages on your legs, and the swelling in your cheek had finally gone down.
It had been a lovely evening. Kou had cooked the dinner, including some of your favorite dishes. Tiara had been a sweet presence for everyone. Teru had been warm and welcoming, as had Aoi. Since the two of them were the most popular students at school, Yashiro had assured you that your ex wouldn't stand a chance at school tomorrow. Teru was disgusted by what your ex had done, while Aoi had been frightened by the story of your relationship. Akane had immediately stepped in, delivering a passionate speech about how a real man would never do such a thing. That moment brought Hanako’s words back to mind. In a moment of despair, you had asked him to die; that wish still haunted you. You didn't feel worthy, you still couldn't bear to look at yourself in the mirror, and you were terrified of the way people at school looked at you. Thanks to your friends, however, you enjoyed the evening and slept soundly.
The next day, Aoi and Yashiro dragged you into the bathroom to get you ready for school. They styled your hair and reminded you what a fantastic friend you are and that you deserve the world. You felt good—there was no denying it. Kou had prepared bento boxes for everyone, and both Akane and Aoi put on an entertaining show before you left: the classic scene of Akane declaring his love to Aoi—only to be rejected, naturally, with her characteristic calm and kindness.
When you arrived at school, Yashiro shook your hand, and Kou wished you good luck on the English test that you were taking that day. You had prepared for the test two days in advance, and after getting an excellent grade, both your friends and your classmates congratulated you. Apparently, no one knew what had happened yet.
As soon as you stepped out of the classroom, you saw your ex's silhouette approaching you. He had an angry look on his face and was accompanied by two friends who were watching you and laughing. Before he could even get close, however, he fell to the floor in front of everyone, and you saw Hanako appear from behind him.
"How the hell did you fall?" one of his friends asked. Your ex stood there embarassed as his expression shifted, you saw Hanako lean close to his ear and whisper something. Your ex jumped up in alarm, and Teru appeared behind him. The students realized how disgusted Teru was with him, he said just one thing: "Get lost and leave the girl alone" The guy didn't hesitate to obey and vanished down the hallway. You finally caught your breath and saw Hanako heading toward the old building. You told Yashiro that you would follow him.
You arrive in the bathroom and find Hanako smiling at you. You approach, looking for an explanation.
"I couldn't let him do anything to you; I'll make sure to haunting him if is necessary" he says it as if it were nothing.
"Why would you do that?" you find yourself asking. Hanako remains silent for a few seconds before stepping closer and planting a kiss on your cheek.
"Why shouldn't I?" He smiles at you, enjoying your embarrassed look.
"I...I don't deserve all this" You immediately feel sad.
"It must be what he made you believe" he adds, stepping closer. "Did he hurt you?" You shake your head. "I'm glad, I couldn't have stood it if he'd touched you again" he says, looking shy.
"Hanako-kun?" He hugs you, and you return the embrace.
"I missed you, you know? Ever since you started dating that fool, you stopped coming to see me. Whenever I saw you, you seemed so drained—no longer the radiant person you used to be." He paused. "It drove me crazy not being able to help you, not being able to do a thing, just watching from afar as that guy took advantage of you and your feelings." You listen carefully. He had always been there—whenever you didn't come to see him, or simply when you were walking around school with your ex boyfriend. He takes your hand and interlaces his fingers with yours. You can't say a word, you just let it happen. "That’s not the way to treat my assistant..." His lips brush against your knuckles, and your heart melts. Then another kiss, and another, and one more on your palm, he chuckles as he sees your face turn red.
"I bet that's something he never did, right?" From that moment on, Hanako treated you differently than usual. As the days went by, there was always something new whenever you visited him. You found a love letter (kindly handed to you by Mr. Tsuchigomori, since Hanako didn't have the courage to give it to you), shared little dates on the rooftop or in the school garden, and received notes reminding you how special you were—and how cute you looked to a ghost like him. You remember one note saying:
—"You are so much more than how others define you. Don't let the darkness crush every ray of light within you, so I ask you—as a wish-granting ghost—don't ask to die. I couldn't bear the thought of seeing your body passing through walls." His choice of words made you smile, for all his goofiness, Hanako-kun knew exactly what to say.
Tsuchigomori himself told you that when Hanako was still alive, he knew how to amaze his classmates, even though he didn't do well in any subject other than astrology or physical education. When it came to writing poetry, he and his brother were the best in their classes.
The days passed quietly. Your family still hadn't gotten over your breakup with your ex, but you decided to ignore their complaints. At school, your ex was looked down upon—thanks to Aoi and Teru, who had alerted the teachers and told the other students about his toxic behavior. People needed to know the truth, even if it was painful for you. Your ex ended up changing school for his low reputation and grades, for you, it was a blessing—it felt like you could finally breathe again.
Aoi, Yashiro, Kou, your friends and Hanako...
You were grateful for their help and the affection Hanako was showing you. But you had also wondered whether all this was just to lift your spirits or if he was truly doing it from the heart.
"Is that really what you think of me?" The sunset was clearly visible, the students were ready to leave, but you had decided to head towards Hanako. You look at him hesitantly.
"It’s just that...I don’t know...lately, whatever anyone else does something for me feels fake, or at least just a polite gesture." Your fingers toy with your hair as the realization of what you’ve just said hits you. You shouldn't be thinking about things like this, you needed to focus on having fun and studying. "Forgive me, I shouldn't have... I—" You don't even get to finish the sentence before the ghost's cold lips press against yours. Your back is against the bathroom wall, his hands are interlaced with yours, and the moment feels like it lasts forever. As soon as the kiss ends, he pulls his hat down, shielding his flustered face.
"Is that answer enough for you?" he said in a whisper. You could have died of a heart attack right then and there. You didn't let go of his hand—you didn't want to. "I’ve always taken care of you and Yashiro since you became my assistants, I promised to show you how someone who truly loves you treats you..." He stroked your head with his free hand. "...do you think I don't want to keep doing that?" You smiled at him, took his hands, and placed them against your chest—right over your heart.
"Hanako-san, Hanako-san, please... will you kiss me one more time?" You hadn't thought you were actually saying it. Hanako was left frozen and surprised by your request. Only two weeks ago, you had asked him to die, and now you wanted something genuine, simple, and tender—a kiss. He said nothing, he took your chin with his fingers and kissed you.
Thanks to Hanako, you had come to understand the meaning of love. It wasn't slaps across the face, confusion, or disgust with your own self, it wasn't foul language, bruises, or having your wrists yanked. Love was something beautiful—truly beautiful. It is kind and gentle, it doesn't pressure, ruin, or exhaust you. It is magical, and it makes you want to intertwine your destiny with your partner's. It is a journey of equals, a team effort, a matter of mutual support and caring for one another without ever having to ask.
You were never the problem—not your image, your personality, your face, or your behavior. The fault lay solely with someone who craved control, someone who preferred to shatter rather than love, simply to feel superior in some way or over someone else.
But it is always best to remember that you are never alone and to ask for help from those who truly care about you, is the best thing—whether they are friends, family...or even ghosts.
Hey folks! I've been reading quite a bit and started a little blog where I thought I'd make summaries, give recs, and also get lists going for various books.
The blog is still bare bones atm, but of you'd like to follow me at @unimpressedseductress-reads, it would mean a lot.
