Yesterday our town woke up to a horrible site. Our beloved “No Place For Hate Mural” had been defaced. (Swipe for its current state) It’s crushing to see a treasure to this town treated this way. It is Building A Better Boyertown’s vision to ensure that Boyertown is a welcoming, vibrant, and engaging community for people from all walks of life. We have started a fundraising campaign to save our beloved mural. @pahwf and @berksfoundation have generously offered to provide a dollar for dollar match of up to $2500 each for a total of $5000! Please considering donating and show everyone that Boyertown is NO PLACE FOR HATE! Link for fundraiser is in our profile. This majestic beast is “Parker”, our Bear Fever Bear of the week! You can find him near the entrance to The Boyertown Community Park. Did you know the Boyertown Community Park has an 18 hole disc golf course? It also boasts a playground, two picnic pavilions, a band shell, a one mile walking trail and a community swimming pool. Summer events at the community park include Earth Day, Boyertown Fun Days, and Duryea Days. Duryea Day is back this year on Sept. 4th! Have you ever been to Cannon Hill in Boyertown that sits at the top of Union Cemetery? The first cannon on Cannon Hill was installed in 1876 on a wooden undercarriage. When the cannon was fired it would recoil so far back it would fly off the end of its wooden track. It was fired on holidays such as the 4th of July and Memorial Day. Townspeople complained bitterly about the noise and broken windows. On July 4, 1910 someone set fire to the undercarriage. No one knows who the culprits were, but there were guesses. Either townspeople did it so it could never be fired again or the men who were tasked with putting it back in place on the track each time it was fired, did it. Either way it was the end of firing the cannon on Cannon Hill. The track was replaced with a concrete base sometime later. The Boyertown Times announced on July 21, 1938, a dedication and presentation of a War Memorial overlooking Boyertown.
