Hey, this was a fun idea I had that came to life last Friday and I plan to continue it. I started a new indie improv team called The Van Coover Cubs. Every show I invite a different set of friends/acquaintances/students, etc. to sit in.                                                              Last year JD Amato and I hosted a screening of this, Jim Henson’s final Muppet made-for-television feature, The Muppets At Walt Disney World.

The film is one of the last things Henson worked on, and it’s profoundly moving to see him voice these characters one last time. It’s also deeply sad to see him dealing with the corporate synergy of the impending-but-not-yet-a-done-deal sale of his beloved creations to Michael Eisner and the Disney corporation. There are some really gross elements of “synergy” in this project— particularly the scene where the Muppets meet Mickey Mouse (the late 1980s corporate version of the character, decades from being in any way interesting)— and it’s also painful to watch Charles Grodin commanding a group of costumed Dwarves from Snow White.

The screening was partially a disaster: many people walked out in the first 15 minutes. Those who stuck around, however, were treated to some moments of Hensonian brilliance, as he bit the hand of his corporate masters with a sequence where Gonzo and Camilla visit the underground and deeply depressing laundry facilities behind-the-scenes at Disney World, where grim-looking workers toiled while Gonzo sings about how magical it is.

You can watch the whole film here. For all its flaws, it’s actual Muppets voiced by the actual people who do those voices, not a bunch of well-intentioned people doing Muppet impressions with some puppets.
