Perhaps you drew the short straw, or perhaps a buddy asked you to take their early morning patrol, either way, you’ve been walking in a circle for what feels like hours, checking the walls and early warning seals for any sign of tampering. Now, on what feels like your hundredth loop, something seems odd... (Intelligence +1)
Despite apparently being granted a return to his usual role of the watchful eyes of any mission, Neji isn't actually paying attention on patrol today.
Not for lack of trying; while he stubbornly drags his gaze away every time he catches himself, time and time again that same gaze finds itself fixed, not on his surroundings, but on the side profile of his partner in this early morning mission.
Shikamaru, whom he'd known as a genius from when they were all genin, in a different way from how he himself had been known at the same time. But while he'd fully succumbed to the trap within the very first task of their mission, the same could not be said of the current chunnin.
"When we were in the stomach of the beast, during the Exams." When he could no longer hide his staring, Neji starts, brows deeply furrowed in consternation, "How were you able to stay unaffected?"
It had been a genjutsu, sure, but as far as he could tell, none of them had realized it while trapped within. This is another problem, as his Byakugan should have been able to detect it, and hadn't, but it doesn't discount his question.
"You must've been able to do something I couldn't," he presses, abandoning the pretense of walking along the patrol path altogether, instead coming to a standstill facing the other Konoha nin.
Tell me what I'd done that wasn't enough.
