My 1969 Rolleiflex is back from Oceanside Camera Repair. And I am full of thoughts. I've walked with this camera since 2011. My step counter on my phone says 18000 miles. Been everywhere with it including wind-swept Scottish beaches and sun-burnt American heat-land. I've dropped it twice, that I can recall. Once on a First Bus while on holiday somewhere in England. And once on Princes street in Edinburgh on the first quarter mile of a day's walk. Both hard falls. Both doing quick, visible damage. But the years of less visible damage had built up. Bent retaining pin on the hood meant it didn't close quite right. The serial number had nearly rubbed away from my bagging and unbagging. Tiny screws in various places always slightly loose. The frame counter window was dusty, almost hard to read. Almost certainly there was sand from a beach on Jura and most recently the Norfolk coast. Southwold sand, I walked that coast from Lowestoft twice.

I knew the shutter and the timing and the focus would have also drifted from perfect. So last November I finally decided to send it off for a full repair. It's now back, after a long 4 months. I can almost not recognize it. But I think it's ready for another 18000 miles. Another decade of walking. Another 50 years of it being a camera, provided we can keep the supply of emulsion film going.

This brings me to my final thoughts which I cannot possibly convey here. It's something to do with longevity and technology and limits. Food for thought for the next miles.

Darkroom rough construction so close to being complete. It's taken learning all the trades: electrical, plumbing, joinery, welding. Not to mention rejuvenation of an at-risk to collapse 100 year old basement.

I've always been fascinated by the northern English usage of definite articles.

In light of current events, I've accelerated some projects. I moved back to the States last summer and had still been walking streets as best I could. But as I'm more or less house bound I've been in the new basement, cleaning and planning and investing myself. A darkroom seems like a good place to be for a while. And I have about 8 years of images that I never really worked through.

Also, the tumblr room seems like a good place to revisit as well. Hello. I hope you all are safe and well.

.. it is to safeguard my self-confidence. For soon my fingers will fumble, and in my hands lie my life.

Cibachrome, also called Ilfochrome, was a chemical colour photographic process that ceased production in 2011. This film shows Tim Hunkin’s home made camera using the process to make a polaroid style instant print. It will be one of the last Cibachrome prints ever.
