“You men notice so little, Pemberton. Physical strength is your gender’s sole advantage.”
“I hate boats.” Rob mutter to himself. He sat on aboard the open deck Of the steam boat ocean liner surrounded by the Mediterranean sea. The full midday sun shone down on Robert as he was hunched over his book, the Collection of Robert Frost.
He has been on plenty of boats and ships before, but he never liked one. The confined space and the vast sea was the only thing that kept you on the metal tub. If he could, Rob would drive everywhere. Albite, the Egyptian sand dunes of Hamunaptra was no place for his new Alpha Romeo.
Rob’s heart leaped at the sound of the ship’s horn, sounding to port. A gust of wind kicked up off the sea, from starboard to post-side, and almost took Rob’s woven fedora. He reached for as it started to take off. The children and passengers rushed to the railing to catch the first glimpse of Cairo. The city of Cleopatra and the Gods of Old. But Rob pushed up his sunglasses and adjusted in his seat, itching to get off the tub.
He reached into his breast pocket of his sport coat and pulled out his tin filled with cigarettes. He placed one between his flesh pink lips and ask the stranger next to him for a light.
“Neither do I.” Helen agreed, “I don’t have the patience for them.” She was aware, as she said this, of the irony. Traveling by sea was quick and direct and, at times, the only way to reach your destination. “There’s nothing but ocean for miles all around you. It makes me feel like we are standing still.”
She hated feeling stagnant. She hated feeling useless.
The first day had been different, of course. She loved the sounds and smells of the ocean. There was nothing quite like sea breezes. But within a day her readiness to arrive in Egypt and the sea stretching out endlessly before her overcame the initial excitement of being on the water.
So this afternoon, when Cairo had finally been spotted in the distance, Helen eagerly welcomed the change of scenery.
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a lighter and lit his cigarette for him. “Helen Prescott,” She said, extending her hand, “I believe we may have met once before,” She added, “You’re friends with Margot, aren’t you?”

hey matilda <333 it’s lizzy!!!!
okay so robert and helen are both archeologists! and I noticed that he and margo have a friendly rivalry thing-y going on and since helen and margo are bffs and have worked together a lot in the past, I feel like helen probably also knows robert pretty well, too, as a result?
OOC | Rick & Helen
Ok so I think Rick would really like Helen! Her spunk and stubborn enthusiasm make her the kind of person he really admires! Anyway, idk how she’d feel about him since he’s…well, he’s Rick hahaha Thoughts?
I think that she would definitely respect him ++ although she’s super excited for the digging to begin, she would also trust him as a professional expertise if he’s like “no we can’t dig here” for x and y reasons.
Anyway further than that -- I feel like she’d just wanna roll her eyes at him for being so grumpy/ticked off all the time @ everything/everyone and I think she’d probably be like “why is he like this???” at first, but I can eventually see her having a soft spot for him when she realizes that he’s actually a good person but a little crusty and then she’d still be like “why are u like this??” but in a teasing way haha. but I can also see where she’d just be like “he’s great at what he does but ugh he’s no fun no let’s not hang out ever” @ him and i can’t decide which I like better haha???

JENN THE OT3: BFFS OF HELEN/OLIVIA/MARGO IS EVERYTHING TO ME!!!!!!!!
Mummy Dearest | Margo & Helen
Sand stretched on and on and on in every direction, bright like gold in the molten sun. Despite her broad-brimmed hat, Margo raised a hand over to eyes to help shield from the glare. Quirking a brow towards her best friend, she grinned. “I think this is the spot,” she said. Of course, the decision of where to begin the dig would ultimately be a discussion amongst the various operation branches of the crew and the archeologists, but Margo was determined to scope out the spot and bring her informed opinion to the subject.
They’d crossed land, sea, gaping river and delta, and this - another sea made entirely of sand - only to be shown the way by dawn as it sketched Hamunaptra’s silhouette across the morning sky like Brigadoon. It had already been an adventure, but the real journey had yet to begin. Margo was itching to start, ready to take a shovel in the burning afternoon gaze of Egypt’s unforgiving sun, and dig herself if necessary. Fortunately, she restrained herself. The impulse remained, bitter and roiling, and she had to at least do this: choose a spot, a perfect spot, to start a dig that she felt sure would impact them for all time.
She had no idea how right she was.
“What about you, Helen? Any opinion on the subject?” It was half-rhetorical. Margo couldn’t imagine her friend without an opinion on any subject, little less one so monumental. Still, she would understand if Helen chose to differ. They were more historians and scholars than diggers. Even Margo would submit to a more well-informed notion - little as she liked the idea. But that had never stopped her from forming her own opinions before.
Hand falling away from her eyes, Margo crossed her arms over her chest. “Tell me,” she added, squinting towards Helen - partially from the sun, partially due to her feelings on the subject she was about to commence. “What do you think of this whole,” she waved a hand. Margo wasn’t one to gossip, generally, being too concerned with activity to have much patience for talking about feelings or personalities or those tiresome tiny necessities of life she’d much rather forget existed. This, however, directly impacted her focus, which made it a paramount concern. She bit her lip. She continued. “What do you make of the Nevilles?”
Rumors persisted, of course, regarding the nature of Peter Neville’s last dig. Peter was, afterall, the sole survivor, a circumstance so awful it had never before been encountered in such a context. His work had always been exceptional, up to this point, but no one knew quite what to make of what had happened out there in the desert, before now. Some speculated that he had seen something too terrible to speak of, others whispered that he had gone mad and murdered his own team mates. Whatever had happened, everyone agreed it was horrific. And now he was here, in the desert with them all, revisited the scene of these horrors…with the mysterious bride he’d married shortly after…a woman who knew a startling amount about the ancients. So much so, even Margo and Helen had come to believe her when she gave them this lead.
Margo was ambitious and excited and so, naturally, she’d jumped in head first, but that didn’t stop her from asking the questions. How did Joan Neville know so much? If she did, why did she and her husband not pursue these leads without them? What happened out there in the desert to Peter’s previous crew? What were they hiding? These sorts of questions didn’t sit well with Margo, but she equally understood that risk was a natural part of what they did…and some part of her had always lived and breathed for mysteries.
“It seems as good a spot as any. We will know, one way or the other, soon enough.” She said.
Helen exhaled, eyes drifting to the rest of the group -- the Nevilles in particular. Her arm was laced through his. She was smiling warmly. He was not.
Truth be told, Helen had some doubts about them. Although she was often cynical, when Joan Neville had come to her and Margo with the exact location of the lost city of Hamunaptra, she had been eager to go. This entire scheme was based purely on the word of a mysterious woman and her husband. They’d never gotten the particulars of what had happened to Peter Neville and his team. Out of propriety, Helen had kept her questions about the specifics to herself (whatever had happened, it was clearly terrible and she wouldn’t ask him to relive it). Still, her curiosity continued to tempt her.
It was a risk, but one Helen had been willing to take. It may all be for nothing, but the alternative had scared her even more. If they were truly to discover Hamunaptra, how could she live with herself it they had passed it up?
She took a step closer to Margo and, leaning in towards her, said, “He seems miserable.” She laughed, “I don’t think married life suits him, much.”
Perhaps her remark been unkind, considering what may have happened to him here, before, but there seemed to be some tension between Peter and his new wife. There seemed to be every chance that he married her too quickly. She was beautiful and charming and intelligent. And he had been through hell. She must have seemed an angel. But it was apparent that she had the upper hand. A slight smile, soft pressure on his arm, and the words “but, dearest, surely -- “ would have Peter changing his mind to agree with his wife in an instant.
Not that this sort of behavior was something Helen had never seen before between married couples. Wives controlled their husbands and husbands controlled their wives. It was one of the reasons that Helen, herself, couldn’t quite imagine herself with a husband. If she ever were to marry, she would want a partner, not a master or a slave.
“But that wasn’t what you meant, was it?”
Margo wondered if she trusted them, and the truth was, Helen hardly knew. She’d been back and forth on that subject in her mind more times than she could count. She’d trusted them completely, once. Or so she’d thought. Had it been trust? Or was it simply the blind desire to believe that everything they said was true?

sldkajfkjdslkjflkjdskljfkaljdslkjflkj honEStLY tho!!! And you know that Henry just cracks a grin like the idiot™ he is <3333333
also
me: henry no
henry: henry YES
He also def goes for the dumb lines like ‘you know you missed me’ honestly 98% sure that will probs be his opening line #facepalm And honestly he loves to tick her off and whenever they’re bickering, he’s also at least 50% flirting w her at the same time heLP
Anyway, I know they’ve encountered each other at least once before and I feel like it was a disaSTER (like everything else in his life tbqh) and they totally had/have this one upsmanship thing going smdh and probs lots of banTeR he’s such a mess i’m so sorry in advance tbqh hahaha
!!!!!! omg yes!!!!!!! I totally agree. I feel like he’s actually shown up in her life a couple of times (helen @ the universe every time: why do bad things happen to good people?) and I feel like it’s always in these kind of circumstances where it’s hard to avoid each other lol (helen @ the universe: what did i do to offend u??)
anyway yeah there’s a lOT of eye rolls and sarcastic comments and crossing arms ++ just walking away from him while he is mid sentence on helen’s part hahah and it’s gonna be amazING

LIZZY THESE TWO THO <3333333 I honestly feel like Lizzie’s always, always admired Helen and wanted to be more like her and aldjflkjsdklfjdkl <33333 I feel like a huge part of what helped inspire what she does now was Helen and her passion for it <3333333 And since Elizabeth is specifically an egyptologist, idk whether or not they’ve worked together before in the field, but omg regardless Elizabeth is sooooo over the moon to be working w her now!!!!
Elizabeth is, in fact, British! I do think that her parents were kind of *sigh* about her and I feel like she kind of grew up feeling v lonely a lot, so their trips to America and any trips Helen and her fam may have made to England (?) were thE most exciting!!!!!!! And I feel like Lizzie was ridiculously stoked to show Helen everything/explore every new corner and honestly probs talked her ear off a lot at first hahaha
But I do feel like the trips to America were usually a few weeks to even a month or two, since yknow they would’ve been growing up in the 1890s-1910s and crossing the Atltanic was super strenuous. That being said, as a result, I feel like the trips were probs not ~that frequent which made it even more exciting when they actually got to see each other <333 And omgg you know they sent sO many letters back and forth!!!!! All the geeking out!!!! (I def feel like Lizzie’s parents were a lil embarrassed by Lizzie’s interest in ancient history and really were waiting for her to outgrow that uncomfortable phase and…that awk moment when she never does outgrow it tbqh hahaha) And omg those letters were really long and intense and Lizzie was constantly waiting by the mailbox when she was expecting a new one hahahaha
AHHH omg that’s super cute <3 so I’ve been thinking about helen’s family more and I feel like her mom was a Reed/sister to Lizzie’s dad and she married an American archaeologist. And when Helen was young she used to travel around w/ them and probably has wanted to do this her entire life!!!! I think, as her dad got older, he probs retired and became a professor or something and they stayed in 1 place and i THINK helen hated that lol.
but anyway I can see helen writing lizzie all the time ++ when they were little she’d write to her about her trips and adventures and be like “1 day this will be us!!!!!!!!” basically haha
BUT THEIR TRIPS WHEN THEY GOT TO SEE EACH OTHER!!!! I feel like helen was most likely a v bad influence on lizzie lol and I feel like lizzie’s parents were like “oh no” @ helen everytime they saw her b/c she def just helped to encourage lizzie’s obsession with ancient history instead of ~help her grow out of it~ :DDDD
ANYWAY do you think they’ve ever actually gone out on a dig together before this one????

hmptmargo:
LIZZY!!! ME TOO!!! I love these ladies already!! OMG no I 100% agree!! It’s such an amateur move to try to tick these ladies off ngl like I feel like they’re so on top of things and know what’s what and I feel like, given that this is the 1920s, as women they’ve had lots of hoops they’ve had to jump through and so they know the ropes and won’t take shit and are super passionate about their work and ladjflkjdslkafjldksjfjs I love them lots <333333
I also feel like they’re suCH a team!!!! And real pros!!!! And their personalities really mesh well! And like honestly between the snarK levels are out of this world <3333 And I feel like they’ve known each other so long and just lsdjflkjds OMGGGGG yessssss! The inside jokes!!!!!! And you know that when they run into certain situations they can basically give each other this looK and just know they’re both laughing at the same thing/have the same idea/are both fascinated by the same archeological possibilities etc!!!
OMG tho can you imagine how stoKed they were when this opportunity came to them!! I mean, I do think Margo at least was v skeptical in the beginning, but as more and more evidence that this woman knew what she was talking about surfaced, I feel like Margo’s like so!!!! pumped!!!! Like, can’t sleep at night, can’t focus on anything else, excited hahaha This is def the sort of discovery you wait and pray a whole lifetime for and it’s just here and she’s so ldsjfkjdsj flkjdks but I mean also trying to play it cool and be professional w the team etc but giddy as a schoolgirl deep down hahahaha <33333
Yes!!!!!!! I so agree!!!!!!!! I feel like they are super used to be underestimated and told they can’t and shouldn’t do things b/c they are women and tbh that only fuels helen haha and I have a feeling that it fuels margo too :) and yeah helen isn’t going to let anything get in the way of her work!!!!! like she’s so super passionate too and thIS IS ALL SO EXCITING!!!!! and she’s so determined and yeah :) also I feel like helen probably worries about say bringing elizabeth on this dig b/c BABY!!!!! COUSIN!!!! but it’s def different with margo like I feel like helen knows that margo can handle herself just as well as anyone and she trusts her and looks up to her and honestly wouldn’t want to have anyone else at her side <3333
anyway so how long do you think they’ve been friends btw??? i feel like it has a least been several years, if not longer???? I also feel like they kinda just instantly clicked when they met??? and like idk at least helen @ margo: i like this one/imma keep her <3

Bestie!!!!!! Ok so these two work together a lot and I feel like they’ve def been in and out of a toN of insane situations (I mean…this will probs top the others but yknow ;D)! I also feel like they have worked together so much atp and make a v well-oiled machine and honestly there are probs lots of moments when they just sort of exchange glances and smirk and ~know hahahaha
KATE I’M SO EXCITED FOR THEM THIS IS PROBS ONE OF THE RELATIONSHIPS I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST B/C THESE!!!! LADIES!!!! ARE!!! AMAZING!!!!
but omg you know it!!!!!!!!!!!! also i FEEL like they are literally unstoppable when they work together at this point, yOU CANNOT TELL ME OTHERWISE!!!!! I feel like you are making a huge mistake if you try to mess w/ them haha. ;DDDD but yeah they are def beyond having to use words to communicate ++ you know there are thousands of inside jokes and stuff and they can just look at each other and just kNOW what the other is thinking and not saying and it is the greatest thing
ooc. helen/elizabeth
ELIZABETH IS THE PUREST SOUL IN THE WORLD HELEN WILL FIGHT YOU ON THIS <3333 there are literally no words as to how much she loves her!!!!!! anyway i feel like helen may be american???? and i’m guessing elizabeth is british so idk if they spent a whole lot of time together as kids but when they did they were inseparable and you know they would write each other v long and intense letters allllll the time and they’d geek out lol what nerds <3
