Runes are a form of writing used across Northern Europe during the middle ages, during the time of of the Anglo- Saxons and the Vikings. Runes found in England can be of Scandinavian origin rather than being the native Anglo-Saxon, because in Anglo-Saxon times England was frequently invaded and settled by the Danish and other Vikings.
Within in England, the Anglo-Saxons runes would be used according to the dialect of the region in which they were being used. So to clarify runic inscriptions made in Wessex would be spelled differently from the same runs made in North Umbria.
Runes had different and various functions, some were used for magic, magical purposes such as for creating spells, where as they was also practical, being used to send messages. Runes were also used to commemorate people, actions or events and they was also decorative.
To translate a rune takes time and great care, as they can be tricky, having been used to write short messages onto wood, bone or even antlers/ hard, cheap and easily available material which could be scratched on.
During the time runes was being used, paper was unknown in western-northern Europe, the only other material available at the time was animal hide which was very expensive in that era.
