Brand Archetype Portrait
I took inspiration from these sports campaigns as I was using Adidas as my brand. They are photographed in urban locations in a city. I chose to photograph the squinty bridge in Glasgow as my background because it has an interesting structure and often attracts runners along the Clyde side.
I photographed my model in the studio, focusing on lighting her body exactly as the lighting fell on location. I used a single light with barn doors to direct the harsh light on to my model.
I chose the above image as an example but I changed the image for the final composite to one with better lighting.
In post production I selected and masked my model onto a layer which I could then copy and paste on to my background image. I had to adjust the brightness and contrast settings to achieve a similar lighting balance. I used a warming photo filter to bring the two images together.
I think my final composite image was a success.
Brand Narrative
I chose Tommy Hilfiger as my brand to photograph. Upon researching their ad campaigns, the results showed a lot of their shoots were outside in an urban environment. Below is my own interpretation of their style for the ‘‘brand narrative’ shoot.
I was happy with the lighting for this shoot, using a speed lite to enhance the quality of the product on location. The Tommy Hilfiger ads I researched were based in clean urban environments. I did struggle to find this in Glasgow at the time of shooting which is why I chose to shoot in front of the college. However, I do think that the clean white steps and bright lighting over all, which was helped from the building reflection, made my final shots work well with the style of my brand.
Fashion Story
The above three images was my makeup inspiration. I wanted my makeup artist to recreate a glowing face of make up to help the model look fresh and energised.
I based my shoot off of these images as they are fashion campaign shots of sports clothes. I wanted my model to follow similar poses to create a similar style. As my fashion story was based on a sports clothes campaign, I used a Scottish athlete as my model as I felt she best met my brief.
I chose a black background for my shoot as I felt it really helped narrow the focus on to the model and the sports clothes. I enjoyed working with the model, photographing her in static and motion positions.
Something Old
Used the above images as inspiration for my shoot. I looked for still life photography using old workshop tools and chose these specifically for their lighting style. I was inspired by the warm light using the technique ‘painting with light’ which brought out the tones and textures in each image. I applied these techniques to my own work.
I am pleased with my overall image as still life is not my strength. I shot this project four times, using my great grandfathers tools. I used three to begin with and finished shooting with one to focus on capturing the details of the object. This helped me develop my skills in skill life photography.
I used a plaster bench from the building students to build a set for my tool. The textures on the bench lifted the detail from my tool and complimented its colours.
Something New
The three images above were inspiration for my ‘something new’ product shot. I used the style of the bag, the black background and the Perspex and the lighting style. All these elements combined helped create my final product shot.
I shot my new black bag on black Perspex with a black background. I used black to compliment the bag and it also helped the silver chain stand out. I lit the bag with two spill kills which highlighted the chain detail and the croc print texture.
This shoot was challenging as dust was very visible on the Perspex. I cleaned it up in photogshop with the clone stamp and spot healing tool. Overall I think my image is clean and looks high end to meet the brief.
Italian Vogue
I created this PowerPoint for the purpose of myself and my team. Both my makeup artist, model and stylist could refer to this to have a clear idea of my final shot I was hoping to achieve.
I sent emails out to bars asking their permission to use their venue for the shoot but none of them returned my email. With the deadline approaching I altered my idea to shoot in the studio using a yellow background which I chose because of the yellow heading on my cover inspiration. Below are my final shots.
This was a fun and creative project which allowed me to explore editorial fashion photography. I took inspiration from an Italian Vogue cover and created my own version of the look.
The background was in bad condition on the day of the shoot so I had to overcome this issue in photoshop afterwards.
Overall I am pleased with the outcome of my shoot and the experience I gained from it.
