Day 18: Inspiration #MarchMeetTheMaker⠀ ...⠀ My mind never rest 🤯 which means I often have way too many ideas. The struggle is to harvest the good ones and develop them before I get distracted, which is not easy. My designs tend to have a narrative which I think is more interesting and delightful.⠀ ...⠀ When I started Hokolo I wanted the designs to be inspired by all things British 🇬🇧and the plan is to introduce the Chinese influence gradually (going back to the brand name of Hokolo = Hong Kong + London. I'm currently working on new designs which reflects the Hong Kong 🇭🇰side of me)⠀ ...⠀ My first repeat pattern is the crown 👑 and orb print which was conceived in 2012 during the year of the Diamond Jubilee. I played around with the crown and soveriegn orb motifs and developed a design which looks like delicate lace from a distance but the detail reveals on closer inspection. ...⠀ I'm sure by now you know I love my food. So for the Christmas pattern is literally what I would have for Christmas dinner, Brussels sprouts, chestnuts and cranberries. Sorry no turkey 🦃 as I hate it, much prefer venison with cranberry sauce 😋 ...⠀ The English Breakfast pattern is the most obvious in its name. I thought of the typical greasy spoon caf and breakfast at B&B, gingham curtain, jam jar tops, formica table, ketchup bottle, fried eggs 🍳🍅🍊☕️. Day 8: Flat Lay #MarchMeetTheMaker⠀ ...⠀ My last product shoot with @dianastainton was all about the flat lays of my tableware. It's really fun styling the shoots with lots of colour coordinated props. We did take ages to get these images right, tweaking endlessly to make everything line up.⠀

Day 9: How it's made #MarchMeetTheMaker⠀ ...⠀ You have seen my handmade lampshades on Day 4 so today I will show you how my woven wool cushions are made.⠀ ...⠀ The Benedict Wool fabric was woven in a mill near Keith in the Scottish Highlands. The rolls of fabric were then cut into panels at Hokolo HQ. The lovely team at a social enterprise in East London then stitched the cushions together. This charity provides vocational training for Bangladeshi men and women who are experiencing mental health issues, supporting their recovery through training in commercial sewing.⠀ ...⠀ Music: No end Ave by bensound

Day 5: Photography #MarchMeetTheMaker⠀ ...⠀ I used to do my own photography in the early days but soon realised it's worth every penny to have a professional photographer to do the shoot. I am very lucky to have worked with several talented photographers 📷 @DianaStainton @andersgramer @yeshen.uk⠀ ...⠀ It's often a very long day and lots of prep work beforehand but it's always fun and the results speak for themselves.

Day 4: Favourite to make #MarchMeetTheMaker⠀ ...⠀ Well...these days I focus on design and outsource my production with the exception of the lampshades which I do handmade to order.

Day 3: How you started #MarchMeetTheMaker⠀ ...⠀ Towards the end of 2011 after 12 years working as an architect, I felt it's time for a change. I wanted to spend more time with my family and be creative again as I increasing found myself doing management, responding to emails rather than designing and getting stressed all the time.⠀ ...⠀ I wasn't too sure what to do besides architecture as that was all I know since leaving school. Like a lot of parents, I love to hunt for the coolest kids clothes for our son D. There were lots of really cool Scandi brands that I like and for a boy the brightly coloured patterns, often quite retro, always win over those gender stereotyped slogans, dinosaurs or tractors! So I thought why don't I design some pattern myself and put them on kids clothes. Afterall I had a cute little boy who can model for me for free!⠀ ...⠀ One Sunday morning I was doodling on the iPad and as always thinking about food! I did my first repeat pattern of the English Breakfast 🍳🍅🥓, pretty crude but the ideas started to roll in. I found someone online to digitally print the design on fabric and then went to H&M, bought a baby bodysuit & a T-shirt, cut them up, copied the pattern, stitched them together and voila my first ever Hokolo garment. I gave the bodysuit to my nephew for Christmas and the T-shirt to D.⠀ ...⠀ After I left my day job, I took a screen printing course. It was the year of the Diamond Jubilee and you see the crown 👑 everywhere and this inspired me to design a pattern with the crown and the Sovereign orb for my first ever screen print. The pattern then became my first collection of kidswear which launched Hokolo in June 2012.⠀ ...⠀ Like most businesses, plans changed, I soon realised I can do a lot more if I don't restrict my designs on kidswear so I applied the Crown Orb pattern on homeware. At the same time I developed the English Breakfast pattern and started to work with different manufacturers to broaden my product offerings. It's all extremely fun and I am still learning new stuff everyday, and true to myself, keep changing my mind still 😅 ... #hokolo

I was born in Hong Kong 🇭🇰 and moved to the UK 🇬🇧 at 15 and has been a Londoner for 21 years. I set up Hokolo (an amalgam of Hong Kong & London) in 2012 after working as an architect for 12 years.⠀ .⠀ Being a 70s child I love all things bright and colourful❤️💛💚💙, often nostalgic of the past. With my background in architecture I love everything geometric and modern which reflects in my designs. You often see me referencing food as I'm a foodie, it's in my blood😋 .
