Hello Effie! How are you?
Broken Girl || Holiday & Chord
Chord knew that he shouldnât have apologized and that he should have just sat with Holiday, allowing the girl to speak in her final moments. He was young, and rocked by her death. He wouldnât just allow her to pass without trying to make things right. Chord wished they were far away from here, in a green field surrounded by flowers. In the background the castle would loom over them as a beacon of safety, and they would take comfort knowing they could both return to it whenever they wished. Butterflies dove and rose around them, but not before they quickly disappeared with Holiday speaking to him. âIâll give it to her.â If he couldnât promise her a safe return he could atleast promise her that. Chord took the necklace and studied it for a moment, tears running down his cheeks in warm streams. âI wish I had brought something to read you to sleep.â He said with a frown as he gently ran a thumb over her cheek. âI know youâd like that.â He sniffles as he wipes at his nose using the sleeve of his shirt. Chord wasnât ready to let Holiday go, he had been affected to greatly to forget. Inside of his mind she would remain, they would sit in his room and talk of things. He regretted never finding out more about her, but knew this was his fault as well. Chord, like any older siblings had been too involved with his own affairs to bother finding out what made Holiday tick. The boy leaned in to rest his cheek against the top of her head, âIâll stay with you until you fall asleep.â
She mustered a slight smile, trying to reassure him. Thatâs what sheâd done all of her young life, reassure people. She was always okay when people asked. Okay or alright, never great. There were times when she wished people would ask her why she was just alright. She wanted people to notice the hurt behind the mask, that she was torn inside. She could tell that sometimes people could slightly see, but they didnât ask. She wanted them to ask, for them to be concerned for her. Not even her siblings asked why exactly she always cried in the middle of the night, or why there were times when she wasnât hungry, even if she should be. In their last conversation Emma and Holiday had been arguing. Holiday had never felt pretty; she was positive she wasnât. Emma had just brushed it aside in the end, but thatâs not what the child wanted. She wanted her friend to continue to tell her she was wrong, no matter how much she protested. She knew that wasnât fair though. âI would have probably already have read it before.â Books always come up around her, and she liked that. It was getting harder to breathe now. There was blood everywhere, horrific blood. It seemed she couldnât avoid death, could she? She thought of all the things she would never do. Hadnât Skye told her the other day sheâd teach her how to play the piano. It seemed like forever ago. She had also never tasted a donut that was apparently amazing. She didnât want to think about the future. âThank you, Chord,â she whispered. She looked up at him one last time before closing her eyes. âYouâll slay the dragons.â
Broken Girl || Holiday & Chord
Beneath Chordâs palm, Holidayâs body lay. The knees of his pants were soaked in her dark blood, his hands and even his cheeks were decorated with the red liquid. His breath came in light but audible pants. Why couldnât he have stopped them? After she had been stabbed he ran at them and was promptly kicked in the chest, which threw him back into the hard stone wall. When Chord landed he immediately tried to right himself; his legs scrambled for purchase on the floor and his body shook with effort, but it didnât work; he couldnât lift himself up. It was terrible to watch Holiday struggle like that, and Chord was relieved when she stopped and lay there, her rib cage rising and falling from her shallow quick breaths. He crawled to her on his elbows and took her hand into his. âItâll be fine, Holiday.â He whispered as he reached out and tucked his hand beneath the girlâs body. He knew he couldnât move her, he couldnât hurt her more. But it seemed kinder to pull the girl up into his arms and hold her against him. He reached down and wiped at her cheeks, âItâs going to be okay.â Chord said, struggling to control the sobs that threatened to break him. What would he tell everyone once he returned to district 13? If he returned. There wouldnât be a night that didnât pass when he didnât see Holiday laying in his arms, crying as her blood stained his shirt. He opened his mouth to speak but only trembled, biting down on his bottom lip to choke back a whimper. Chord had advised Gale against trying to escape. There were guards outside of the cell, they had been smart enough this time to tighten security quite a bit. When the other did manage to escape there was a small bit of hope that rose up into his chest. Maybe they would be going home after all? But when Gale didnât return he sat beside Holiday and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. What really could he say now beside offer her comfort? It was the best he could muster. Now she was laying with a gaping wound on her chest, he would wake tomorrow knowing that her death could have been prevented if Gale had heeded his warning. Instead he could only look down at the girl in his arm and wipe fiercely at the tears that streamed down his cheeks, âIâm sorry, Holiday. Iâm really sorry, I couldnât save you.â He wept, his shoulders trembling with force.
Holidayâs chest burnt, like fire. She could hardly breathe, panic setting in. She squeezed her eyes shut, attempting to find something to hold onto. Chord came over to her. She grasped onto his hand, tears streaming down her face. She was going to die. She didnât look at her chest, scared of what she would see, but she knew it was bad. Very bad. âChord, Chord it hurts. I donât wanna die.â He attempted to comfort her, but it didnât work very well. She opened her eyes and looked up at him. He had a panicked look on his face. âItâs not going to be okay, though,â she said quietly. âYou know itâs not.â She didnât understand his apologies. It wasnât his fault. He didnât do this to her. Itâs the Capitolâs fault. Not Chordâs, not Galeâs. Somehow it almost felt like her own fault. It always had. She remembered a promise she had made to Emmy what seemed like years ago now. To stay safe. Of course that canât always happen in a war, they both knew that. Still though. âChord, tell Emma Iâm sorry-â she took a deep breath, her chest continuing to burn, her eyes wet. â-and tell her she was the best sister ever.â Her free hand pulled the eagle necklace out of her pocket. Emmy had said that the eagle meant freedom. She didnât feel very free. She never did. Someone was always controlling her and telling her what she had to do. She always felt so small. That's what she was. Small. Just about everyone was bigger than her in one way or another. They always had control. That wasn't free, is it? What did she know, though. She sniffled. âGive her this?â
Broken Girl || Holiday & Chord
Holiday cried as she heard screams of people she knew that wouldnât stop. She was in a cell with Chord. They had both seen Gale making attempt to escape; he said heâd come back. From his screams it seemed he didnât make it. She was crying a lot though, the whole time she was there. She hated being there, she hated people being hurt. So far they hadnât hurt her  though. So she waited for them to come. Waited and worried.
They heard footsteps coming down the corridor. She scooted into the back corner, wrapping her slender arms around her legs. She was still in her plain blue pajamas from the night before. She wished she had just gone to sleep. The footsteps continued to come. It was a man; he dropped a bloody, beaten up, barely alive Gale Hawthorne on the cold ground. âGale!â the small girl choked out. The man turned around and raised an eyebrow at her.
âYou know him.â He took out a pair of keys and unlocked the cell door and walked in, locking it behind him. He took large steps and walked over to her. She noticed a large knife in his belt and sank farther back into the wall. She glanced at Gale, and then to the man. He grabbed her arm and pulled her up. Holiday kicked and hit at him, trying to get him off. It was useless, of course. He took the knife and turned around to face Gale, holding her by the neck. Her fragile hands were wrapped around his muscular arms so he wouldnât strangle the poor girl.
âPlease donât hurt me,â she begged, tears streaming down her smooth, childlike face. She didnât want to die, she was absolutely terrified. There was nothing she could do though to get free. There was no hope if he wanted to kill her. She had said the same words to her father when she was younger, after her mother had died. He still hurt her. Begging didnât change cold peopleâs minds.
He raised the sharp, silver knife. âYou see what you did Gale,â and he plunged the knife into the little girlâs chest. She fell to her knees and the man left the cell, locking the door behind him.
Nobody's Home || Holiday
Holiday opened her eyes, finding herself on a cold, concrete floor. Â She didnât sit up, afraid that someone would see she had awoken. It was dark, but she could still faintly see. Not wanting to move, she faced a grey concrete wall. There were dried blood stains running down to the floor and seeping to a small metal drain. It didnât take long for her to figure she was in the Capitol, a city she was in awe of when she was younger. Thatâs where she had desperately wanted to live, with the colourful, happy people and the large quantities of food. Now she wanted to go home. What was home though? Not District 8, really. There hadnât been anything there for her, not since her mother died. It definitely wasnât District 13, though it wasnât too absolutely terrible there. So what was home for her? Because she wanted to go home. She wanted a place to go home to. She felt tears in her eyes, scared. It was the same scared feeling she had had when she was awaiting the games.
She listened, trying to hear for anyone around her. It was dead silent. Like a cemetery. A piercing, pain-filled scream filled the air, interrupting the quiet and startling Holiday. She recognized that scream. It belonged to Peeta Mellark, the kind boy from District Twelve. She couldnât stop the stream of warm tears that fell down her freckled cheeks. âI want to go home,â she whispered as she squeezed her young eyes shut.
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate.
When morning comes it'll be too late.
No Place to Go || Holiday
Holiday walked down the empty corridors at random. She couldnât sleep, of course she couldnât. She never could. The others didnât see how absolutely terrible it was for her; at least she hoped they didnât. That was her goal, not to upset other people with her problems. They had problems of their own, didnât they? Even Emmy, her closest friend, didnât know exactly how bad it was. She liked to walk though. It kept her from falling asleep. She couldnât sleep if she was walking, and she couldnât dream if she wasnât sleeping.
As she walked, consumed in her thoughts, she heard a noise down the hall. She stopped for a moment, listening. She heard footsteps coming and ducked into the closet nearest to her. She kneels on the floor, squinting to see whatâs happening. When they walk by she sees Chord, unconscious and held by a man in black. A gasp escaped her thin lips before she could stop herself. The man stops. She sat silently, her grey eyes wide in fear, not breathing. He continued after a few seconds though. She sighed out of relief before the door was opened.
There stood a man, a different man. He was wearing the same thing as the other one though. He was middle aged with cruel dark eyes and a pointy nose. She looked up at him fearfully. âYou saw that, didnât you?â His voice was gruff, unfriendly. She hesitated before shaking her head no. He smiled a cruel smile. âYouâre lying.â He grabbed her arm with a rough grip and pulled her up, covering her mouth to muffle the screams. She tried to struggle away, choking back tears. He took a large needle of a clear liquid and stabbed it into her arm. She whimpered in pain before feeling dizzy. The room started to go fuzzy and her hits to the man got weaker. It seemed like the man was miles away now, that anything was miles away. Her eyelids got heavy and she felt the ground fall away. She closed her eyes, for the first time in a long time not caring who visited her in her dreams.
Non Reassuring Sleep || Holiday and Foxface
Foxface smiled at Holiday, âCome on. We should go to the room so you can get some sleep.â She stood up and placed a hand on the little girlâs back and lead her to the room. The redhead really didnât know how to explain why she would risk her life for the little girl from 8. Or maybe she did. All she knew was that Holiday reminded her of her little sister(s), and like she said. She wasnât about to let someone she cared about die on her again, so, Foxface would keep a protective eye on Holiday. When they reached the room Foxface opened the door and allowed Holiday to go in first. When she walked in Foxface closed over the door a little, leaving a small light to break through the room. âClimb into bed Holiday. You need to sleep.â The girl from 5 lifted the covers open and waited for Holiday to climb in. When she did, Foxface tucked Holiday in, like she did for her siblings back in 5. Foxface smiled at Holiday and kissed the top of her forehead and smiled. âSweâŠI mean. Night, Holiday.â When the little girl was tucked in good, Foxface walked towards the bathroom and closed the door behind her. She looked in the mirror and finally began to breathe. What if she lied to Holiday? What if things wouldnât get better at all, would Holiday hate her? Foxface turned the sink on and washed her face and went back into the room. She climb into bed with the sleeping girl being careful not to disturb her. Remembering how Foxfaceâs little sister(s) always loved sleeping with her for comfort, Foxface never really understood why but now that her sister(s) was gone she began to understand the comfort.Â
She didn't want to sleep, she really didn't. However, she didnât put up a fight when her friend tucked her in. She wanted desperately to stay awake, but she was exhausted, to say the least. She couldnât help it, and in no time at all she was asleep.
It was dark in the room, the only light faintly seeping in from the thin windows near the ceiling, so it took Holiday a moment to place where she was. It was her school back in District Eight, a tall, rundown brick building with faded tiles and writing on the walls that had been there for years. She was sitting on the floor in the corner of Ms. Rhodeâs classroom, the last teacher she had had before she was reaped. Her slender arms were wrapped around her legs, alone except for the night wind. She sat there for a few moments until she heard footsteps echo though the halls outside. Thump, thump, thump. Unable to stand, she scooted further back into the corner, pulling her legs closer to her chest. The footsteps paused momentarily before the door started to creak open, revealing her father.
He was tall, the opposite of Holiday in that matter, him being about 5â11â They were more alike than different in appearance, though. He was thin, though just about everyone in the district was. They both had the same brown hair, pale freckled complexion, and grey eyes. Thatâs what bothered Holiday the most, how similar their eyes were. It scared her sometimes. She wished she looked like her mother instead: clear, fair skin, kind bright green eyes, and long, curly ginger hair. Light and dark was how she had heard her parents described. Night and day. It was a good description.
âW-What do you want?â She asked in a small voice. He raised an eyebrow. She could smell the alcohol on his breath from across the room.
âWere you tryân to h-hide? You canât hide.â
âGo-go away.â You could hear tears in her voice. He took a step forward and she pushed herself completely against the wall. âPlease!â she cried. He didnât stop though, just continued to walk.Â
âYouâre ugly, ya know that? Real st-stupid looking. Nobody likes you, you know that.âÂ
âLeave me alone!â she yelled, covering her ears and shutting her eyes. She could still hear him though, taunting her as he stepped forward. âNo!â He yanked her arm away from her ear violently. âNo! Leave me alone! I didnât do anything, leave me alone!â But he didnât.
âNo. Leave me alone. Please,â she muttered through her sleep. She woke up in a fit of sobs, shaking.
