i just think like yes ilya obviously puts shane on a pedestal because he view shane as being this perfect good person who is going to realize that he is rotten and bad and leave him but shane also puts ilya on a pedestal of âwell ilya and i are at the top together. that might happen to other people but ilya isnât other people heâs ilya.â and i think they both need to realize they they are just fallible people. Or donât and just be a crazy codependent couple if thatâs what makes them happy.
I know I'm just never going to agree with this portion of the fandom but I really genuinely cannot understand how people can read Ilya's POV in TLG and still see him as some kind of master daddy dom who's orchestrating all these scenes with Shane instead of a guy who occasionally likes to play with power dynamics but is mostly just white knuckling it through his entire life
kinda bums me out that every conversation about homophobia in this fandom inevitably devolves into an assumption that Only straight women and gay men like HR. as if queer women and gnc people canât resonate with a story about how debilitating homophobia is. Like we can address the fetishization of queer men without acting like our lived experiences are so severed that other queer people canât personally connect to a story like this

does make me think extremely chewy thoughts about how fucking complicated this has to be for ilya. like obviously things with his father are SO fucking complex and layered and there's so much pain there, but also what emotional potential of being the only person he consistently remembers. even ilya's older brother gets forgotten, but when he's distressed, ilya is the one he calls? he ALWAYS seems to know ilya?????
it adds to the guilt also that he's the only one who can calm his father down or at least handle him when he's like this and yet he's the one on a whole different continent, but also what a twisted wreck of feelings it has to be to be the only one their father consistently remembers. like there HAS to be love in there, doesn't there? if i'm the one he remembers when he forgets everything else? i'm at least THAT important to him? i have to be, don't i? even if everything else is gone, i'm still in there. that HAS to mean something, doesn't it?
but also what fucking guilt to know that alexei almost certainly feels resentment about this as confirmation that ilya is their father's favorite and always has been and always will be. and like from ilya's pov, it didn't save him AT ALL, but also how fucking complex to be the younger sibling and yet be the only one their father consistently remembers.
Tbh Iâve always thought that Alexei was Gregoriâs favorite when they were kids (Ilya was Irinaâs). And Alexei was already kind of resentful because being Gregori's favorite means tiny kernels of attention/affection while Irina is lavishing praise and attention on her "special boy" Ilya.
Then Irina dies and the dynamic changes anyway, but then Ilya starts succeeding. Gregori is still critical toward Ilya but he's paying more attention to Ilya's career than he is before. Gregori is throwing around backhanded compliments toward Ilya and all Alexei hears are the compliments. Behind Ilya's back, Gregori is probably saying "yes we're very proud" etc.
Meanwhile Alexei is getting criticized and nitpicked to hell and back. And it feels so distinctly unfair to Alexei because he did everything he was supposed to and followed their father into the same career, while Ilya ran off to America and abandoned the family, and yet he's being negatively compared to Ilya.
As Gregori's dementia gets worse, Ilya becomes this kind of mythical child figure in Gregori's memory, who still needs (Gregori's version of) attention/affection, while Alexei is just kind of...there.
Honestly, at this point I think that people genuinely think Shane is not capable of understanding jokes. Like I am sorry, but if you are using Shaneâs autism as âproofâ that he doesnât understand Ilyaâs joke about ânot liking him as a personâ or even Yunaâs âfavourite sonâ joke, then thatâs ableism. Shane is not dumb, he clearly likes joking and chirping at his loved ones. Like do yâall really think, Shane took the whole pregnancy thing seriously, when Hayden joked about it in episode 4? Please tell me yâall donât think Shane didnât get that joke because of his autism.
something that always bothers me in this fandom is when people completely misunderstand what the C on shaneâs jersey stands for. no it doesnât stand for âcaptainâ it stands for Consensual Non-Consent
In my head Shane is 14 when one of his coaches finds him on the ice doing extra drills after practice and he makes some Crack like, "Guess you're not a once in a generation talent after all." And Shane is surprised and doesn't know what he means, and thinks maybe he did something wrong? A stupid newspaper called him a generational talent a couple months ago and the kids on his team - well it's fine. They're still winning. "More like twice huh?" The coach finishes. He holds up a DVD in an unlabled jewel case (because it's 2005) "Got something you're going to want to see."
The coach takes him to the video room and puts the DVD in, "There's a kid in Russia, same age as you. They're saying he's the next Gordie Howe."
He presses play and they watch a shaky video of two Russian teams. Shane's heart starts racing as he watches. He can immediately tell who coach is talking about. One of them is clearly faster and smarter than the rest, moving through the defense with a slick confidence that Shane immediately finds fascinating.
"His name is uh," coach digs though a pile of paper, "Romanof or something." He finds what he's looking for, "Ilya Rozanov. He'll be draft eligible the same year you will."
Shane feels that same sense of determination, terror, and joy he always feels when one of his coaches talks about him getting drafted like it's a forgone conclusion. He keeps watching the kid on the ice, the same age as him, and very good, and also already set for the draft.
His play style is fascinating, and when his shift is over Shane grabs the remote to fast forward to the next time he gets on the ice, wanting to see more.
His coach laughs and claps him on the shoulder, "Don't worry about him too much. You won't be playing him for a couple of years."
Shane watches this boy skate around his teammates like it's easy, like he's bored, maybe as bored as Shane sometimes is with his own team. He can't wait.
the show actually works really hard to establish a dynamic in which shane and ilya would not publicly mock/laugh at/criticize each other. specifically in fandom i feel like i mostly see this constructed in a "shane is the nagging bitchwife and he's always reigning in his crazy childhusband's antics." it also goes the other way at the end of TLG with ilya publicly tearing shane down which i hope does not appear in season 2, because it's the opposite of what is set up in the first season of the show.
there are multiple scenes where shane is invited/expected to criticize ilya: "shane hates him most, right?" etc, and he literally cannot muster any mean thing to say stronger than "oh yeah, he's an asshole," while staring longingly at his image on the television with adoring tears in his eyes. like shane literally thinks ilya is the coolest person on earth he doesn't want to rein him in he wants Maximum Ilya at all times he cannot form a sentence in which he honestly says anything bad about this man. he is not waiting for a chance to tease him! he is desperate for a chance to tell people how awesome he thinks ilya is!
also a pivotal first emotional moment in their dynamic is at the press conference, when shane steps in to protect ilya from being publicly embarrassed. he's so careful and deliberate about it baby's first act of service submission, "with rozanov's permission" etc., and this is the act that is used to frame their romantic relationship! it's the gesture (nudging their feet together under the table) that recurs in the last episode when they're planning for their future and shane has been outed to their parents. it's a promise to protect the other from the judgment of others, even when they can't directly acknowledge their feelings
like they enjoy privately teasing each other (well. ilya enjoys teasing shane and shane enjoys being teased) but they have an enormous amount of respect for each other, arguably ilya is the only person in the world that shane actually respects as an equal. one of the biggest things they feel the need to plan for at the cottage is how they're going to publicly show that they like each other, that they're not rivals or enemies. and sure some of that might be so no one will suspect that they're secret lovers, but a lot of it is that i think pretending to dislike each other is as hard as pretending not to love each other.
once they're finally and openly together, they would love the chance to be publicly on the same side

And then you find out oh no this isnât a new thing (like Shane implied) this has been going on since the DRAFT. Since before the draft! And your brain is just like melting (you donât have a lot to work with there anyway) and then youâre pissed all over again because what, Shane was getting jerked around by Rozanov all these years (Not how it was Hayds) or like Rozanov was taunting him (No) and wow is he just going to up and leave once he gets bored (HaydsâŚ)
And also your best bud just never mentioned any of this. But you canât be mad at your best specialist boy friend (look at him heâs so good at hockey) so you just get mad at Rozanov some more
people keep talking about fat baby shane...
