Lois didnât spend much time in her apartment. Sometimes she fell asleep at her desk in the Gotham Gazette office, sometimes she slept in her car on a stakeout, and now that Diana and Clark were both here, sometimes she stayed with one of them. But tonight sheâd actually made her way back, a couple of bags of takeout in hand. As soon as she stepped inside, she knew something was off. She thought about calling for Clark, knowing if he was close enough heâd be able to hear her, or at least her heartbeat, but she kept her lips stubbornly shut.Â
She heard a soft rattling sound from her bedroom, and she set her bags down calmly in the hallway, before flicking the light on. âOh, yeah?â she said. âLet me point you in the right directionââ She pointed toward the window. âIâm guessing thatâs where you came in.â She jerked her thumb over her shoulder. âThe front door is that a-way. And oh, right aroundâŠâ She waved her hand around her pocket before fishing out her phone. âHere is my phone. Which I could use to call the police, unless you give me a pretty good reason why not.â
Holly laughed out loud at the mere suggestion of the police. âYou think the GCPD has time for a petty home robbery? They barely have their shit together as it is with the Joker and his pack of hooligans.â She said, barely containing her amusement. âBut no harm, no foul---â The young woman said, dropping the handful of likely worthless jewelry back into its home. âIâll put this back and pick a different house.â She shrugged, taking a small step back toward the open window.

Holly was so bored now that the bridges had been gone for a year and she had robbed all of the shops and museums that were worth her time. She couldnât leave Gotham to raise hell in other cities, so she had taken to breaking into houses. She wasnât usually a fan of homes; they were unpredictable. People could come home at any minute, they could have dogs, they could have absolutely nothing valuable. That last one was the worst. Holly hated wasting her time.Â
So, here she was, fully clad in black leather---including her cat mask--- rummaging through a jewelry box in a dark bedroom, praying for at least an old family heirloom or a grandmotherâs engagement ring set aside for someoneâs big question. Marriage, another waste of time. When the lights flicked on, Holly froze. âOh. Hey. Iâm... lost?â She said, mentally slapping herself in the face for getting sloppy.

Zach laughed. âMaybe they were just trying to be nice,â he said, grinning at her. âThey could have been just trying to give me a compliment, you know. Iâm more than just a piece of meat, thank you very much.â He flopped dramatically across the couch, his head ending up her lap. âAnd here I thought you almost sort of liked me.â
âOh, really?â She said, feigning complete unawareness. âI thought I kept you around because of that pretty face. I like pretty things, you know.â Holly said as she pointedly looked at the priceless art on display in her apartment---art that she told Zach was mostly prints of the real pieces. He didnât need to know that she was a master thief. She looked down at Zach in her lap and her heart did a somersault for a moment as she thought about how much she liked having him around. âI do. Sort of.â She teased. âSo, what do you want to do today?â

Holly tilted her head at him, looking at him for a moment, and then nodded. âThey were trying to screw you.â She said, the words definite. âNot that you arenât completely mesmerizing, darling. Because you are. But they were definitely trying to get into your pants.â She laughed. She hadnât meant to date---in the absolute loosest sense of the word--- Zach for so long, but here they were. In a semi-casual, semi-serious thing.Â

Holly laughed out loud, an entirely playful sound. âOh, you really arenât any fun at all, are you?â She said with a teasing tone. She had a feeling she wouldnât be able to break him. âWhatâs your name, Mr. Serious?â The woman asked as she scanned his body for a badge anywhere. No, his eyes still had the light in them, he couldnât be GCPD.

Holly gave Thorn an exasperated look. âCanât a girl play around? Everyone thinks Iâve caught feelings.â She pouted. Maybe it was true, maybe it wasnât. She smirked at her question. âIf heâs lucky, maybe. What about you? Do you have anyone on your hook right now?â

âYou want me to curse at you? Hurt you? Come on you know me too well. No matter what you do to me, i could never hate you. â he asked her, an exhausted expression on his face. He really did not want to be having this conversation. But now that he started he couldnât stop.âAnd thatâs the worst thing about any of this. A part of me will always be in love with you. Every time I see you, youâre beautiful. Perfect. And you didnât see that in me, but honestly who could blame you? Iâm nothing. A poor boy destined to go no where but to the other side. So no Holly, I donât have anything to say to you. Is that what you wanted to hear? Are we done these games now?â
Holly bit back a smile when he said what she had wanted to hear. He didnât hate her. She felt bad for toying with Mike, especially after what she had done, but she wanted to keep him on her back burner in case things with Zach went sour. Mike had always been good to her; he had always kept her safe and made her feel loved. So why would she throw that away if she still had a chance? âYou are perfect,â Holly mumbled back, hoping he hadnât heard her slip of the tongue. She shook her head at the question. âDonât you know Iâm never done playing games? Life is a game. Itâs better not to take anything too seriously. Thatâs how you avoid losing.â

Zach grinned at her. âOh, I always put the work in for the right reward,â he said, a smirk touching his lips. He snorted softly and shrugged. âI donât look a gift horse in the mouth,â he said. âOr a gift wine in the bottle, or whatever.â He snorted. âNo, that makes no sense at all,â he said. âSleight of hand is easy, anyone could do that.âÂ
Holly smirked right back. This boy was dangerous. She had never gone after someone like him; confident, but with a golden heart buried deep in his chest. She knew it was there. She had a knack for sensing valuables, after all. The only question was... would she be able to resist his charms long enough to get what she wanted? She hoped so. âWell, I tried.â She said. âYes, but to make it look like magic... I couldnât do that. I can only make things disappear.â Holly said with a mocking flourish of her hands.Â

Zach laughed. âUnfortunately no,â he said. âI didnât lose my shirt, itâs right here.â He patted the gym bag at his side. âI just donât feel like putting it back on. Itâs all sweaty, anyway. I would have used the gym showers but public spaces in Gotham are pretty fucking dodgy at the best of times, let alone when youâre naked.â He snorted. âWell, if youâre dying, I guess I have to, huh?â he teased, grinning. âIâm not cruel.â
âWhat a shame,â Holly mused. She perked up when he said that he didnât feel like putting the shirt on. âThatâs fine by me. And yeah, I wouldnât trust the showers. No doubt someone would try to cut you up out of jealousy.â She shrugged. Adding to Zachâs ego was fun and she hoped that flattery was the way to earning his trust. âA kind and benevolent soul.â Holly nodded with a grin. âHow did I ever get so lucky to meet you?âÂ
