Coloured Figurative Mono-print -
Evaluation
'Masters of Chaos' For this project assignment titled ‘Masters of Chaos’, we had to decide a theme which links to ‘Shamanism’ I have chosen to focus my research and artwork around ‘Witchcraft’; Wicca and animalism (animals). What interested me about this project theme was the opportunity to experiment with other materials and methods other than just painting or acrylics, I wanted to push further in creating a final piece with more mixed media. This consisted of the use of dead animal’s bones, skulls and parts that are symbolic in that nature usually used in spiritual practices, and animal skulls and bones being a strong belief in animal spirituality and decease in Witch cultures. An overall success in the making of my artwork, were the black mono-prints of the animal skulls, this worked well in my progression towards my final because the images came out clear and detailed, with the effect of the smudged black ink, it created a dramatic theme, to portray death. One thing that didn’t really work out was white mono-printing technique on black paper, this was because I had tested it out a few times but there the overall turnout would be too faded or too smudged, this was a problem as the ink didn’t highlight much detail and caused sections to smudge out that part of the image, also played around with black prints of cat skulls on canvas paper, which created a clear image, however was less defined by the ink, causing it to look faded and quite dull. I began working with pen and watercolours for some of my initial ideas, and wanted to design a print and add a watered down effect, to portray ageing and decay, mostly working with browns and nudes, I preferred the natural colours that created a realistic look. One Artist whom I gathered some of these examples from is a mixed media artist Dorothea Tanning, whose work entails a range of mediums to express, such as sculpture, printmaking and painting. Some of her print work caught my attention the most, the dark ink prints are oddly presented and give a sort of distorted and misarranged style, I could make them out to be abstract shapes or of humanly figures, constructing it to seem very over dramatic in the form of movement as well as in depth. My final piece was a representation of how animals are used in spiritual practices, animalism and an ‘Evil’ look into ‘Witchcraft’. I constructed my piece out of black and red mono-prints, using 3 separate sheets of card and joined them together to form a human like body, with the head of a Ram skull. I had also used a few symbols, such as the goddess, divinity and witches foot/pentagram. One thing that I found to be most successful about my final piece is how clear the body structure came out in mono-prints, the smudged effect around the body and skull created a strange dramatic effect, which still sharpened the lines in the horns and ribs area. the lines and shading. However I didn’t have the chance to add in feathers, to hang from the skull horns, preferably real/fake feathers on string, for realism, this was to enhance the overall feel of the piece, as they are seen as something beautiful and innocent, which is the opposite of what I was aiming for about this piece, however it adds an interesting concept about the relationship between good and evil.
- FINAL PIECE - I have used Mono-printing to construct my final outcome using red and black ink, and dripping effect from the skull/horns.
'Guildhall' A collection of photographs taken from the exhibition to gather ideas and inspiration, these were a reliable source in the progression of my designs and initial pieces.
-Initial idea- White mono-print of ram skull on black paper. I think that this was a success in the way of the ink not smudging over too much of the image, but enough to see details in the horns and on the head.
Demonic claws/hands - dark graphite and pen drawings. The pen designs were very successful, as I used the method of keeping the pen on the paper until the image was drawn, this took precision and concentration as there can't be no loose ends.
Tested to see if Black mono print painted over with yellow, red and orange watercolours, would be symbolic of how good and bad can be connected or flipped, to portray a brighter and more uplifting effect for the drawing of something death related - Colourful feathers from birds, inspired by exotic colours and parrots.
Mono-print of cat skull on canvas paper, to test out if it works just as effectively on other material surfaces. Black mono-print on paper, creates a harder and more dramatic effect.
- WICCA SYMBOLS - I have used dark charcoal drawings to present some witchcraft symbols and what they believe they represent in the witchcraft culture. -The Goddess- The triple moon (Goddess) symbol represents the maiden, mother and crone, it also symbolises feminine energy, psychic abilities and mystery. I will include this in my progression towards my final outcome.
- Initial ideas - Black charcoal and white chalk drawing of a ram/goat skull.
Charcoal and graphite drawing of witch/shaman/deity with the horns of a Ram.
Artist influence - Goya Witches I have used the animal skull to portray spirituality in animalism and the passing over into the next life, Goya gave me some inspiration on how to create an unsettling and creepy appearance, as I have blacked out most parts of the image to focus your attention on the most important part, same for Goya Witches, who instead portrayed the shadowy demonic figure (Satan) as malevolent, shown by the dark shades to draw your attention to the darkest part of the painting.
A collection of hand drawings and gestures.
Artist influence - Dorothea Tanning I created my own piece using the same sort of mediums that she used for her artwork, I used skin coloured watercolours and pen. Her work inspired me to mix and test different styles of artwork such as painting, printmaking and sculpture. I would work more on watercolours and printmaking, as the results have so far come out effectively for my artwork, and progression towards my final outcome.
'The Welcome Collection' (exhibition) The point was to include photographs of artwork/images and drawings related to our themes.

Evaluation for ' Out of this World'
For this project I used my previous knowledge of psychedelic images and experiences to link with my chosen theme ‘Out of this world’, for which I have used a variation of topics to portray and further experiment with for this project. Some of these topics include subjects and states such as depression, death and of course psychedelic visions, and the limitations of what is out there in the universe and space. I have associated my work for this project around Fine Art, mostly because it is what I have previously used and would like to specialise in, especially with 2D designs and initial ideas created with paints, prints and a vast majority of drawings that have been further developed to help me with creating my final piece. One thing that I didn’t think worked well were some of my ‘skull’ and ‘space’ initial ideas, which I did not improve further on, and into my final piece, because they didn’t link together as effectively as I hoped they would, as they both are very dissimilar subjects, instead I could have linked space more with psychedelics rather than dark. One thing that I enjoyed and think specifically worked well for this project was using Mono-printing, and using different techniques to it and creating very detailed images that corresponded well to my theme. This was very useful for merging different pictures together, as I used different colour schemes which made each one unique in itself and reflect the style given from the image, for example I used a rainbow scheme, which was very effective for creating vibrant drawings, hopefully giving them a more psychedelic look. I have been focusing on a range of concepts to do with space, and started looking at artists portrayals of hallucinogenic and trippy images in general, my initial idea for the project was to link it to drugs which I had previously used as a main theme for past projects, however I associated my next piece more to planets and space, with the combination of people and figures. The idea of this was to use faces and body parts as initial ideas and replacing certain areas of the image and replace it with a starry landscape or planets, which resembled more of a surreal theme rather than a trippy theme. I started researching for artists with similar approaches and styles. One Artist influence who gave me inspirations for this project was Robert Richter, whose artwork really caught my eye, although his artwork was made digitally, I used the same visual designs instead by using acrylics and black pen. I used this technique instead of Photoshop because I prefer working with 2D mediums such as paint. He used simple black block backgrounds with small intricate starry details to set the scene of the image being in space, especially his attention to detail on the small surreal images and astronauts that brought his artwork to life. Another influence has been after looking at the surreal perspective of ‘Out of this World’ I started to focus on scientific explorations and discoveries, such as galaxies and black holes. I looked up different images of these topics; colour schemes, and the use of shapes and techniques I could use to create a perfect representation of both galaxies and black holes. My theme and final piece was concentrated around two topics, psychedelic space and Depression (states of mind). I aimed to use these as my main structure for this project because I was fixated on how depression is state of the mind, and shares a deep link with ‘Out of this world’, that I wanted to further evaluate and produce a piece dedicated to that theme. One thing that I would change/improve about my final piece is some aspects of Mono-prints to the background, to make it symbolize different techniques, rather than just painting and brush strokes expresses the difference between how things affect people mentally instead of physically.
