“Better watch it, Autumns. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were coming onto me right now.” His deflection by the way of humor was easier than admitting that he didn’t exactly believe he had any good qualities to offer. He was an asshole with a temper, he found himself in trouble more often than not, and he’d somehow managed to make an enemy out of his own mother. “It’s also okay if she just looks like me.” He would have preferred her to take after Asli and to have a few basic features of his own. If that was the case, it’d save her years worth of trouble and that was all he wanted for his daughter. “I appreciate the offer, I do, but I don’t know if I’m ready for that yet.” There was so much he wanted to say, but nothing could fall from his mouth when it came time to say it. It was frustrating and it was enough to make him fall into a pit of silence. “I just, I can’t.” The last thing he wanted to do was get angry at someone who was merely trying to help, but he couldn’t. He’d heard a few people tell him about Aslihan’s feelings, but it’d never made sense to him. If she’d wanted something more, why hadn’t she ever said it? “Avery likes to imagine shit that isn’t there.” It was the only reason he could think of and now it didn’t even matter. “Ray’s a good guy, right? It worked out.” He hated hearing that she’d missed out on some chance and as much he wanted to, he couldn’t even blame it on the guy for fucking something up.
“Yeah, I’ll send those to you whenever I get them at the same time.” In the moment, he wanted nothing more than to see his girls together. After feeling like he’d once again hit some kind of metaphorical bottom, he needed something good. “Not even close.” It was a weak attempt to joke, but with as much stuff on his mind, it was basically a fail. “I should get going. We can do this again sometime. Just call me or something.”
“Oh please, you wish you were that lucky,” she quipped back. But her smiled softened. “I mean it. You’re a great guy. Yes, you’ve made some bad choices. That doesn’t mean they should define you and who you are now." Sighing, she shook her head. Elizabeth, James, and so many others did such a number on him. And frankly, it made her angry. It made her so frustrated that he’s now been conditioned to not believe in anything good about himself when that simply wasn’t true at all. “Atlas...” Groaning, the redhead nodded. Backing off now. “Okay. Okay, we won’t talk about... whatever it is that’s going on with you.” Yet she looked over at him, making sure to make eye contact. “But whenever you feel you are ready. You know where to find me. Okay?” Her lips pursed. She tried to think about it, tried to think back to any instances where she’s noticed the two together. Admittedly, she’s thought that she saw something a few times. “Why do you say that?” Avery was many things, but to imagine something that’s not there? That wasn’t the girl at all. She was rather observant and meticulous about things. She didn’t believe that Avery would say anything if she didn’t truly believe it with all her heart. She nodded. “One of the best,” she admitted. Ray truly was a genuine person. Anyone would be lucky to have him.
Smiling softly, she nodded. “I’d love that, yeah. And if you need anything for Maggie’s room, I got some things still from back when Blair was still a baby that I can give you. I most certainly am not going to be using them again any time soon.” The auburn-haired woman had three children. She was certain that she wasn’t going to have anymore. Face falling, she was saddened at the idea of him leaving. “Yeah. Yeah, sounds good. Don’t be a stranger, alright? It’s been too long since you’ve been at the café; I’d love to make your favourite sometime soon.”
