James Holmes’ Employment at MeriCal Incorporated
In October 2010, before the Aurora theatre shootings of July 2012, James Holmes registered with Aerotek Staffing, a temp agency which specialised in helping those who wanted to work in scientific or technical jobs. They placed him at MeriCal Inc, a factory which manufactured dietary supplements. James took the job and worked Monday to Friday on a pill-coating machine.
He interacted with other employees there as little as possible, working the shift between 4:00 PM and 2:00 AM. On one occasion, they saw him laughing to himself alone earning him the nickname “the giggler” among his coworkers. One employee who met James said he thought he was “retarded”. A human resources manager chose their words more carefully, saying they suspected James had either autism or Asperger’s disorder.
One fellow employee took to harassing James, something which culminated in this employee becoming highly aggressive towards him. A different employee who said they regarded James as being “childlike” stepped in, telling the aggressor to leave James alone. During all of this, James remained passive and did not say anything in his defence. When human resources later asked him about it, he said only that he hadn’t heard anything of the sort transpire.
Holmes submitted his resignation from the company in January of 2011. A year later he walked into a screening of The Dark Knight Rises (heavily armed) and murdered 12 people he had never met before.
