Just an announcement

Hello everyone! I hope you guys are doing well, physically and mentally. Sorry for not updating for so long. 

I would like to inform I might not be able to constantly update translations of Ishida Sui’s streams anymore. My classes have started returning to being physical, so I have lesser time to spend in front of the screen. Depending on how busy I am, I might not be able to continue translate anymore. 

To all who read my translations, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Even though my translations are very lacking, I am grateful that you guys take the time to read it. Translating his streams has been a source of joy to me. If I could, I definitely would like to keep on translating his content, consistently. However, university is a priority and I need to my best in my study so that I would not disappoint those closest to me.

Info from Ishida Osushi 6/14 – 8/13 streams

This is the highlight of the stuffs Ishida Sui talked about in his streams from June to August. Sorry for any grammatical errors. 

- Ishida doesn’t have any bias towards his own characters. Just because he draws some characters more than others doesn’t mean he favours them more.

- He wants to be called Maestro Osushi.

- The first 24 chapters of Choujin X is just the first chapter of the story. A prologue.

- He wants to turn Tonari Young Jump into Tonari Oyaji (old men) Jump.

- His hand never feels sore even when drawing for a long time, since he doesn’t put much strength in his strokes.

- When asked for tips on how make drawings look cool. Ishida mentioned that it could depend on the angle, pose, and composition of the characters. Determine a spot that’d make your characters look amazing.

- Ishida doesn’t like giving tips to people. He believes it’s something people must discover on their own. What is applicable to him might not be applicable to others.

- He believes you should both study and practise art. If you keep practising without any knowledge, your drawings are not gonna become better. You must have comprehension of why things are drawn the way they are (eg. Why this part of body is drawn curvy).

- He’s a bit sceptical on the technique of imitating illustrators’ art style. He thinks drawing different kind of artworks is more effective than imitating the same illustration hundreds of times.

- Ishida totally prefers digital drawing than analogue. It’s convenient and definitely helped him draw effectively. To him, digital drawing is something that God has bestowed upon him.

- He was given allowance by Young Jump to buy drawing devices when he was just starting out.

- He prefers drawing short hair, since it’s easier.

- He wouldn’t show or tell people what brush he uses because he doesn’t want people to steal his techniques.

- He talked about Elon Musk Open-Source Movement in which he allows people to use Tesla technology for the sake of industrial & humankind development.

- Ishida stated he’s not interested in aiding on the development of art industry or whatever. Whatever techniques he discovers should remain his only.

- He gets his reference from various sources, such as illustrations or sketches of others. He also uses ballerina for pose reference.

- He bought a book titled Charles Bargue: Drawing course, which compiled various pencil sketches.

- If he could draw his best when streaming, he’d stream continuously.

- He recommended Morpho: Anatomy for Artists books. He bought all the books from the series.

- He suggests analysing drawings and follows the techniques used in the drawings, rather than blindly copying someone’s art style.

- Ishida once acted as a tree house in a play when he was a kid.

- He once wore a lame orange shirt on a date when he was a high schooler, and he was told to take it off (lol). Not sure if this was just a joke or true.

- Ishida Sui felt honoured when Horikoshi Sensei mentioned him.

- He praised My Hero Academia and complimented the fact that Horikoshi Sensei seemed to be having fun writing the manga. He wished him all the best.

- Ishida Sui and Ishida Osushi had a conflict, with Ishida Sui hindering Ishida Osushi’s desire to do Animal Rap.

- Ishida almost got scammed by a foreign lady in insta. But because the lady was sexy, it made him want to be scammed.

- He wants to go to Togashi Sensei’s exhibition.

- His favourite BNHA characters include, Shigaraki, Deku, Ochaco, Toga, Twice, and Tsuyu.

- His bias in Aespa is Winters. He said everyone’s pretty, but Winters had a unique face.

- He wants to talk about political stuffs with Horikoshi Sensei. He also wants to converse about their pasts and lives before being mangaka and be a support to each other.

- His older sister, Towada Shin, is the biggest Animal Rap fan. She kept asking Ishida Sensei for more AniRap content.

- He had once lived in Saga prefecture, located in northwest of Kyushu.

- Ishida Sui has three personalities: Ishida Sui, Ishida Osushi, and Grey (the mediator between the other two personalities)

- He doesn’t really do food illustrations.

- Goubaru was a bit depressed, so Ishida wished for him to go for counselling. He didn’t want Goubaru to suffer alone nor did he want Goubaru to involve him.

- He’s completed Elden Ring.

- Ishida Sensei was furious with Goubaru. Even so, he still wanted him to get better.

- Kunimitsu was watching him drawing Spaghetti Gratin (SpaGra) when he did the stream.

- While he prefers digital drawing, he thinks digital drawing is tiring since it feels like he’s working.

- He wants to try drawing another JJ one shot using analog, but digital is faster.

- He drew some TG chapters with analog. But because of various reasons, he switched back to digital.

- His eyes don’t really get tired looking at the screen all day.

- Ishida changed his chair to tatami chair. He also changed his table to a lower height. Sitting on a chair makes him feel like working, so he hates it.

- He once tried working while standing and he got dizzy.

- Kunimitsu once ordered food delivery. However, the delivery guy mistakenly sent it to the apartment next to his. In the end, the guy living there ate his food for free.

- Ishida also once ordered food delivery. The app stated that his food had been delivered, but he didn’t receive it. So, he searched his entire apartment building for the food, only to find the food on the floor below his.

- Ishida sensei had a chat with Horikoshi sensei. He called him an eccentric person. When he replied to whatever Horikoshi sensei was saying, the conversation ended there. Horikoshi sensei wouldn’t talk a lot. Ishida tried to expand the conversation but failed.

- Ishida never went to his high school reunion parties. But when he felt like going, he caught a cold.

- He thinks fellow Mangakas can’t be friends with each other.

- Towada shin was busy writing at the time of the stream, so he felt really lonely because he didn’t have anyone to talk with.

- He was kinda afraid of the fact that his life only revolved around drawing manga. He felt empty after he finished a chapter cus he didn’t know what to do next. So, he started drawing another chp again.

- He once had a crush on a girl living in his neighbourhood.

- He recently visited his hometown, and he was reminiscing about the girl.

- His crush used to be his classmate during middle school, so she sometimes greeted him. But he couldn’t reply anything back.

- He passed through his crush’s house but it’s already different than it used to be before.

- He got along with the girl, but nothing happened.

- He couldn’t hold his feelings for his crush, so he wrote a letter to her after they graduated. Fortunately, she replied to his letter.

- He got her contact number, but unfortunately, they lost contact because his phone broke.

- Ishida Sensei said Kunimitsu’s sister was pretty. They didn’t look similar.

- Not sure whether he’s joking or not, but Ishida sensei seems to have a fear of death. He’s too suspicious of other people that he thinks he’d get killed if he goes outside.

- He told his Shariboys to not get along with each other.

- He wished everyone in this world to remain single and live alone by themselves.

- He even asked Kunimitsu if that’s some sort of illness. Kunimitsu then suggested for them to live together for a short time, which he refused.

- He considers his sister as his friend.

- Horikoshi sensei didn’t follow him on twitter, but he wanted him to.

- Ishida wished for everyone to get along, but because it’s impossible, it’s better for everyone not to be friend with each other in the first place. (He’s got a typical villain mindset, lol.)

- He feels more comfortable talking with people who have feminine vibes.

- He likes to listen to Kunimitsu’s love life.

- Kunimitsu suggested him to create a channel where he gives advice to his fans’ love problems or write a romance manga.

- His younger brother played the route that he wrote in JJ and told him it was romantic.

C: Sensei, honestly speaking, have you ever thought newbie mangaka are inspired by you when you read their one-shots?

I: I don’t know about that since I’ve never had the chance to read one. However, there are a few people around me that have become mangaka and following my style. When I saw that, I thought they’re copying me.

K: (laughs)

I: I asked my staffs’ opinions about it. I did have that kind of thought. Other than that, I’m not really familiar with the current manga, let alone the chance to read newbies’ works. People who judge their works might have the opportunity to do so. They did ask me to be the judge for new manga when I was doing TG, but I rejected it since I was a shitty bastard.

K: That’s a big responsibility, after all. Someone’s life could be changed because of that.

I: That’s right. I did think it might be worth it, but the me at the time was just a novice and felt unqualified to judge. I might get hated, so I rejected the offer. I still am to this day.

K: Would you accept if they offer you now?

I: I might reject it due to different reasons. I want to use the time I have to do other things. I want to concentrate on myself. If the same thing happened to you, would you accept it?

K: I could give my opinion on whether it’s good or bad, or whether I like it or not. But I wouldn’t know how that person’s gonna turn out in the future. So, it’s hard to give judgment whether that person’s qualified or not. I could only judge them based on the quality of their submitted song.

I: I think that’s absolutely fine. After all, evaluation requires your current judgment.

K: Then, it’s not an evaluation of the person because I only rely on that one song.

I: Well, that’s the way it is. It’ll be too much to handle if we think about their future. We can only judge their capabilities through the works they submit. It’s like an exam.

K: That’s why, I think it’s too big of a responsibility.

I: Yeah, it is. There are things that could help us prepare in taking such big responsibility. We could train ourselves, in the first place. I did think I might’ve run away from responsibility too much. Maybe I should’ve looked at them.

Ishida Sui and Takahashi Kunimitsu on self-love

K: I wanna be good at love.

I: Are you (laughs)? I see, you wanna be good at love.

K: Seriously.

I: (laughs) There’s no good or bad in love.

K: I wanna get along with myself. I wanna love myself more (laughs).

I: (laughs) Why? But I get you (laughs). Ultimately, you can’t love another person if you don’t love yourself.

K: I’m really bad at loving myself, so I wanna be good at it.

I: Which part of you, you don’t like? Go look in the mirror (laughs).

K: (laughs)

I: Tell me. Which part? You have two eyes, a mouth, and a pair of ears. So, which part of you can’t be loved (laughs)? What is it you don’t like about yourself?

K: I’d feel worthless.

I: Everyone feels that.

K: They do. However, I can’t become stronger if I told myself I’m not.

I: People think before they act about a lot of things. But when they think too much, they can’t have a wrestling match with the other party.

K: (laughs) So, I’ve been doing Sumo all by myself.

I: The other party might wanna have arguments. When you guys argue, you might realise the other party doesn’t think of you the same way as you do. You might be able to love yourself more, right? That way, you can destroy the labels you’ve put about yourself one by one. Then, you’d gradually love yourself. **

**t/n: Just to make it clearer in case it’s hard for you to understand what he said. He basically meant Takahashi Kunimitsu cares too much about what people think of him, so he often being cautious of what he says or does. However, if he just be himself, he may realise that people are actually okay with it.

K: I had been doing sumo alone all this while. I was the one thinking badly about myself.

I: You’re like that sometimes.

K: Me? Then, I’ll be careful from now on (laughs).

I: (laughs) Try to do it.

I: There’s a lot of things where we think too much. After all, it’s terrifying to be hated because you did something or say something weird. It’s okay to say something weird once. The other party might not give a damn about it. You’d realise it’s not something bad. Of course, there are times when the opposite happens.

K: Then, tomorrow I’ll buy a cake (laughs).

I: (laughs) Why are you buying cake?

K: I wanna spoil myself.

I: That’s good. Go buy some cake.

K: A reward for myself.

I: That was funny. Buying cake seems like a happy thing. People only buy cakes on joyful days, after all.

K: It’s like a symbol of happiness.

I: Everyone, go buy a cake precisely when you’re down. Buy the one from cake shop.

K: I do envy them, but there were things that only existed back then. This makes me realise I’m an old man.

I: That’s right. This is something I often think about. Everyone used to read books back then. There were few entertainments during those times, so people only read books or watched movies. So, there’s a lot of intellectual people in the past compared to now. That’s what I think. People don’t read books for every info they want nowadays.

K: They can just google.

I: I think googling or over aiming for efficiency can cause your brain functions to decline. Those who read books or discover things by themselves are people who possess unique abilities. In other words, they’d become people who can do things others can’t. I believe people who read books rather than watching youtube would’ve different talents in the distant future.

K: Books, huh?

I: Yeah, books. Movies are also okay. People who do uncommon things kinda stand out.

K: Reading book is undoubtedly extraordinary. The act of reading is an entertainment to them. It’s not the content that’s entertaining but reading itself is entertaining. It’s a bit eccentric.

I: Yeah. This is a subculture.

K: It has become a subculture. People used to read books like it’s natural. There were more magazines back in the day.

K: Since I’m already an old man. I’m gonna try my best to stay young.

I: (laughs) You’re gonna try your best to be young?

K: I wanna be recognised by the younger generation.

I: Does it really matter?

K: I need to find the good points about myself. It doesn’t necessarily apply towards younger people. It’s the same with music. Rather than deciding the song isn’t your type from the first listening, I think it’s healthier if people could find the good points in the song.

I: As for me, I don’t care about anything anymore (laughs). I had once thought about what you said. So, I understand what you’re saying. I personally think I’d be better off doing my own thing. It’s good to know what kind of stuffs kids these days do, but you don’t necessarily need to mingle with them.

I: If only I were a Gyaru or a pretty girl.

K: If I were reborn as a pretty lady, I’d take lots of selfies, seriously.

I: Seriously (laughs). I’d take selfies every day.

K: I wanna be told I’m cute.

I: Right? I wanna be told that.

K: I wanna be cute.

I: Yeah. I really think about it.

K: You can’t get that experience elsewhere.

I: True. There’s nothing like being called cute as a girl. Nothing can be compared to that feeling. That’s why I envy those girls.

K: It’s not that we’re seeking approval from friends. You can get approval from other stuffs. It’s just that we could only experience being called cute through that.

I: True. We could only be called cute if we’re girls. Must be nice to be them. Enjoy your lives, ladies.

Ishida Sui and Takahashi Kunimitsu on Otaku Culture in the past

K: Back then, joining sports clubs seemed to be trend. Nowadays, people are being more tolerant towards Otaku culture.

I: Otaku used to be oppressed back in the days. They were called disgusting. Female otaku used to be very secretive about their interests.

K: I couldn’t say to people I read Shoujo manga.

I: I read them too. I didn’t have someone to talk to about them, so I didn’t.

K: I couldn’t in my case. Now that the era has changed, people are able to say about it freely. It feels like my burden has lifted (laughs).

I: (laughs) That’s true. That’s genuinely a good thing. Whether it’s about games or manga, to be able to talk about your interests freely is a wonderful thing.

K: People who read manga other than slam dunk was ridiculed.

I: Dragon ball was also an exception.

K: I used to read Hana to Yume**.

**t/n: Hana to Yume is a Shoujo manga mangazine first published in 1974.

I: I have an older sister, so naturally I read a lot of shoujo manga. I read shoujo manga more than any other manga.

K: You had them at home, that’s why.

I: That’s right.

I: I’m thinking of going on a diet again.

K: You don’t eat much in the first place.

I: I did eat quite a lot a little while ago. I had a craving for sweets after a long time.

K: Have you gone on a shopping spree before?

I: I have.

K: You had party all by yourself.

I: Yeah, I had. I ate pizza. There’s a lot of time where I regretted eating big.

K: Well, it’s like a reward for you.

I: Yeah. It went on for a while. It felt like I was slacking, so I’m thinking of going strict again.

K: For instance, you eat only gooey stuffs like okra and natto.

I: I had that. There was a time when I ate only those with udon.

K: But it’s good.

I: It was, but the appearance was really bad. In addition, it’s winter now. It’s bothersome to go out and all.

K: That’s right.

I: I haven’t been exercising. I should do that too.

K: You discipline yourself? That’s commendable.

I: If I don’t discipline myself, I’ll become uncontrollable. If I take a break from work, I might be taking a break forever.

K: So, you have no choice but to discipline yourself.

I: Yup.

K: That’s really amazing. I can’t do it.

K: When it comes to food…

I: You can’t control yourself?

K: I don’t really crave anything. I just eat any food. I’m the type who do nothing when I take a break from work.

I: What’ll happen?

K: Drool would be dripping from my mouth…

I: (chuckles) You always say that. Is it okay to be like that?

K: Of course not. But by doing nothing, you’re not doing anything bad.

I: That’s true. I have a friend who didn’t really do anything in his life, but he looked like he’s having fun. I don’t know what’s in his heart, though. But he’s having a bit of a hard time now. When I saw him, I thought we were raised differently.

K: It could be because he’s a lazy guy.

I: I think that’s amazing. I wanna be lazy. I am lazy, but I feel bad for being one.

K: You don’t enjoy being lazy.

I: Yup. You do?

K: I don’t enjoy it, but I become one naturally. Nothing crosses my mind. I don’t even think I’m not doing anything. It’s tiring to keep on doing meaningful things.

SY: Did Kunimitsu-san flunk a test before?

I: SY is a freshman in high school. I thought he was in 3rd year of middle school all this while. He’s in the theatre club, but he wondered whether he wanted to be an actor or a musician in the future. I was giving him an earnest advice about his worry, talking about it seriously. As I was giving advice, he suddenly commented that he felt relieved already and went to bed.

K: He’s full already (laughs).

I: Yup.

K: His tummy’s already full and he felt sleepy after that. (laughs) So cute.

I: He’s still a kid.

K: He acts just like a high school freshman. So cute.

I: He’s so free.

K: Yeah. Of course, you’d feel sleepy after your stomach’s full (laughs).

I: Yup (laughs). And that SY is asking you if you ever flunked a test. Are you really interested to know?

K: Do you really wanna know? Even if I did, what is it to you (laughs)?

I: (laughs) That’s true. By the way, I flunked tests a lot when I was in high school. 60 was the failing mark.

K: That’s quite harsh.

I: Yeah. And I didn’t even study at all during my high school years. I tested how many times I could retake the test again (laughs).

K: So, you retook and retook repeatedly.

I: Yup. I failed a lot.

K: 60 was quite high for failing mark.

I: Yeah, it was.

K: I never flunked any tests, but the failing mark probably wasn’t 60.

I: So nice. That’s admirable.

K: Rather than admirable, the standard was too different from yours.

I: The 60 mark was one thing. Adding to that, there’s a lot of subjects that I didn’t understand, like Industrial Physics (laughs). What the hell is that?  

K: Since you went to vocational school, right?

I: Yup. I totally didn’t understand what was being taught there.

SY: I scored 70 for Geography test today~

K: Way to go, SY!

I: Great job!

K: To get 70 for Geography is amazing!

I: You asked a question, but you talked about yourself (laughs). What a carefree person. This boy is one of my biases. I had a hard time remembering his name until recently. I kept calling him, Yuki.

K: Because his first name is uncommon. The teachers probably confused at first.

I: They must’ve mispronounced his name as Yuki.

K: It’s amazing for him to get 70 for Geography. What do they teach for Geography in 1st year?

I: I wonder. SY, what topics did they cover in the test? Mine was a specialised school, so they probably didn’t use the same syllabus as the general school. I wouldn’t know, though.

SY: It covered places like Iran.

K: Iran (laughs).

I: Iran? Did you really score 70?

SY: Europe also.

I: Why did you write the continent, but not for Iran? You could’ve just written Middle East (laughs). You didn’t score 70 for Iran questions. The other 30 marks were for Middle East questions, then (laughs).

K: That was funny.

SY: The scope was wide.

K: If the test covered Middle east, then they must learn World Georgraphy.

I: Yeah, must be.                      

K: At this age, I do think I should’ve paid attention to the lessons in school.

I: Absolutely. It sounds interesting if we learn it now. It’s just that there were more fun stuffs to do at that time.

K: It’s not like we entered school because we wanted to learn.

I: Yup. We went to school just for the sake of it. I went to vocational school because I wanted to get away from my parents.

K: If that’s the case then…

I: I didn’t have any interest in studying.

K: Since you’re finally able to leave your house.

I: I played games all the time.

K: The teaching method also wasn’t suitable for me. There must be a method that’d fit me. Of course, I also had the responsibility to study, but…

I: Even if they use teaching methods that could grab the interest of students… Well, teachers are also like us. Not every teacher is passionate about their job.

K: That’s right. It’s difficult. It’s hard to teach if both parties aren’t engaged with each other.*

I: That’s true.

SY: We learn about Industrial Triangle in Europe.

K: So, you guys learn about that as well.

I: I don’t know about it.

K: It’s a triangular connection between France, Germany, Britain or Italy.  

I: There was something like that. Weren’t there 2 triangles? Or was it different?

K: There were, but they focused on the one in Europe.

I: It sounds fun if we learn now.

K: Yeah. Study too.

I: Study as well.

K: Overall, I’ve never failed a test.

I: In conclusion, Takahashi Kunimitsu never failed his tests, SY.

I: Or an actor. You might not be anyone.

K: I think it’s amazing. It’s good to have big dreams when you’re in high school.

I: You can become what you want if you wish for it. It depends on how you achieve it.

K: if you put in effort at that age, anything can happen.

I: That’s right. Anything can happen. The possibility is infinite for high schoolers. He’s in his 1st year to boot. He must be having fun.

K: If these 2 old men say it, then it can come true. Anything is possible.

I: Yup. I’m not joking. Anything is possible. However, he might feel like doing nothing and live an idle life.

K: Cause there’s too much time in the world.

I: I, myself played around at that time.

K: I do feel like I’m old now, but when I was a university student, I didn’t feel time was limited. I still had a lot of options back then.

I: Yup. That’s right.

K: Your viewers are all young, right?

I: Youtube does provide that info. The average is 25 years old. 55% of the viewers is female.

K: So, it’s 50-50.

I: Yeah. TG readers were also 50-50 between male and female.

K: Were they?

I: Yup.

K: The manga didn’t feel like something that came from Young Jump.

I: The magazine was mainly for guys. However, when TG was serialised there, the number of female readers increased. Manga that were easier for women to read also came out at the time, like Nakayama Sensei’s** manga. It was probably uncommon for the readers to split half between male and female.

K: A lot of them are still in their 10s. There’s a lot of high schoolers here.

I: There’s someone who’s 15 years old. There’s someone younger than you, SY.

C: I’m in late 20s.

I: This age is easier to talk with. There’s a lot of teenagers. Go to sleep (laughs).

K: It’s not good to look at the screen too much.

I: The average is 25. I thought there’d be a lot above 25, but I was wrong.

K: Everyone can be anything they want, then.

I: Yup. That’s nice. Be anything you want.

K: You can achieve your dream if you start now.

I: Right.

K: If you aim to be athlete or footballer at the age of 33, then it’d be impossible.

I: You’re right. I envy those people. To admire someone. I do admire Togashi Sensei, but I never thought of becoming like him. It’s impossible, that’s why.

I: We’ve lived in different circumstances. We’ve lived different lives ever since we were born and learned different things. If I were to compare it with old game console, there’s no way someone who’s born in the Famicom era and someone who’s born in the Switch era would have the same upbringing. K: Nowadays, even elementary students have smartphones. They can make friends outside school. The world has broadened. We used to only be friends with classmates.

I: There’s a lot of How-to lessons, after all. Even with drawing, people can improve their arts by watching Saito Naoki’s videos. It’s the same for music.

K: In terms of music, the quality of music kids aged 17-18 do nowadays are definitely better than when I was around that age.

K: The fans in the cinema were very passionate. Mangaka doesn’t have any live events or anything, so they can’t really see the fans’ enthusiasm. It was the first time you witnessed how enthusiastic and passionate your fans were about the series.

I: Absolutely. I thought so too. Mikasano-san asked me how I felt, and I told him it felt like a deception (laughs). I gave him such a negative answer (laughs). But he was relieved when I told him that (laughs). He probably thought it’s a good thing I wasn’t joyful about it. There was nothing wrong for me to be so joyful about it, though. My series was made into a movie. But I told him otherwise.

K: Having so much enthusiasm isn’t a bad thing. It’s a good thing, but I didn’t realise it then. I talk about this lots of times. Manga is made ahead, right? It’s not a live thing. It goes through the drawing process to being published in magazine to being made into volumes. Then, it reaches the hand of readers. It’s not a direct product from the authors to the readers.

I: But musicians have live concerts. Something like that?

K: Yup. You can see musicians in person.

I: I used to think it must be nice to be able to experience that. It could be a bad thing as well, with the anxiety and all, but it gives off the sense of unity & togetherness. I thought it was nice. That’s how I felt when I went to TK concert. I had never been to a concert before. I was so touched when he invited me. Live concert’s an amazing thing. I could get used to it.

K: We, musicians, can know what sort of people our fans are since we see them in person. It’s hard for Mangaka to do that. When I saw them (TG fans) in the cinema being as enthusiastic as fans in concerts, I was quite surprised.

K: It’s a happy thing for us, seeing those passionate people coming to see the movie/concert.

I: That’s right.

K: There will always be some people who are often in the front row in concerts. I did a tour with the band, Cinema Staff. We went to different regions for concerts. The same people were in the front row for every concert.

I: They followed you guys? That’s amazing!

K: Yes, they did.

I: There’s a lot of passionate fans. In my case, I think there a lot of TG fans who visited all the exhibitions.

K: I think that’s amazing.

I: Yeah. My mommy** also went to the exhibition in Osaka.

I: Yup. She told me she wanted to go.

K: Having those kind of fans makes us feel happy and thankful.

K: Do it with an acrylic version of you.

I: Yup. Araki Sensei was surrounded by people, as expected.

K: Then, I’ll ask Matsuo-san.

I: You can just ask me (laughs).

K: There must be a lot of foods. It was a buffet, wasn’t it?

I: Yeah, it was. The foods looked delicious, but I’d never eaten the food there.

K: Really?

I: You might understand what I’m trying to say. Matsuo-san brought along people to meet me.

K: So, you didn’t have time for yourself?

I: Right. I was preoccupied with introducing myself to other people. Not that I care much, but it’s better to show my face to the people there. After I finished greeting everyone, the first party had ended. So, I wasn’t able to have a taste of the buffet. After that, I had to go to the second location with an empty stomach. The place was more like a spacious bar, so they didn’t really prepare food there. I was hungry the whole time.

K: You totally didn’t have any chance to eat, then?

I: I was never able to indulge the foods there, but my staffs were all enjoying them, with plates full of foods. I was starving while watching them gushing about the buffet.  

K: It’s possible that they were enjoying the party itself, not the food.

I: Was it? As for me, I’m indifferent about food.

K: I’m a bit childlike when it comes to food.

I: Do you like food?

K: I’m not usually like that at home. But I do go crazy about food at those kinds of events. I’d eat a lot.

I: That’s commendable. You’ve matured.

K: The foods are delicious, after all.

I: I get you.

I: I know they are tasty. That’s all there is to it. I rarely feel like eating more because the food is so delicious.

I didn’t wear it because I didn’t want people to recognise me. I was doing nothing and just chatting with my staffs. Suddenly, someone came up to me and asked if I was Ishida Sensei. I was surprised he found that out. It’s because Goubaru was standing next to me.

K: I see.

I: I was indeed grateful, but I thought of not bringing Goubaru along at that time (laughs).

K: People could probably guess based on the people around you*.

I: That’s right. I’d definitely get noticed if I went together with Goubaru. That’s why I’d lock him forever.

I: (laughs) Since you’re an introvert. However, Akashiya Sanma** once said it’s good to respond to the person back.

I: That’s right. There’s one incident happened during the release of TG movie. I couldn’t join them, but I once heard people I know were being followed.

K: Who? That kind of thing happened?

I: Yeah. My family went to see the movie and Mikasano-san** was there at the time. I was at Fukuoka, working. When I came to Tokyo for a meeting, I heard that there were people who recognised Matsuo-san**, so maybe they thought I was there too. So, 2 persons were following them. That was scary. I’m glad I didn’t go. But I felt sorry for the others since it might’ve been unpleasant for them.

I remember reading the translation somewhere, but I'm not really sure. I've listened to the radio show, and they basically talked about their hardest moments in life, feeling suicidal, etc. They also talked about trivial stuffs just to get to know each other. Hello. It's gonna be a while before I translate yesterday's stream since I'm a bit busy.

He basically said he had to kinda follow the magazine's pace and format, which was different from what he had initially planned for Choujin X, so he stopped serialising it in the magazine. He said there might be people who wanna read the manga in papers, but since it's gonna be made into volumes anyway, it didn't really matter if the manga isn't serialised in the magazine.

I: I didn’t wanna touch on that subject initially. For me, I don’t think it’s good to post or tweet something like “I dressed up as this character from this movie”. They aren’t cool at all, but there are people who think they’re so cool when they cosplay. So, they might wanna try doing things the characters they cosplay as do. Most people who commit crime feels euphoric when they do so, which I find to be stupid. So, that’s why I think it’s better if you write something embarrassing about your cosplay when you wanna post about it. For example, rather than saying your makeup is cool, it’s better to make fun of yourself.  It’s better to ridicule yourself rather than thinking yourself as cool and commit crime just for fun.

C: I’m scared of riding trains now.

I: I think the Covid-19 has affected people’s mental health. I personally think that dangerous people might increase due to that. It’s gonna become harder to live, but I want you guys to protect yourselves as much as possible. I can’t have my maids gone.

Ishida drunk episode

C: I don’t know what to do when I see drunk people vomiting.

I: Just leave them alone. I used to ask them if they’re okay or not. They’d always say “I’m okay, I’m okay.” People tend to say that when they’re drunk. I understand them. People asked me if I was okay when I slept under the tree yesterday. I told them I had a little bit of drinking. (laughs) I tend to be kind to people who are drunk. I’m worried if they might seriously die.

I: I slept under a tree yesterday. I slept in a teddy bear posture. (laughs) I would like you guys to visit Acros Fukuoka one day. I slept under a tree nearby the building. (laughs) Go visit there someday.

I: I’m just average.

Ishida’s bike accident.

I: I’ve once rode Ms. Towada’s bike and got into an accident. Her bike was damaged, and I got scolded by her. A cabaret girl-like lady asked me if I was okay. (laughs) I thought cabaret girls are nice. I’ve ruined my right side of the body. It wasn’t big injuries. I just had few scratches on my body. Riding a motorcycle invites accident. I: Rather than mixing around, I’m the type of person who likes to watch people having fun from afar. Just like a grandpa. I really think of wanting to be a grandpa now. You might wonder what the hell am I talking about, but I seriously wanting to be one. You’ll automatically become grandpas and grandmas as long as you continue to live, won’t you?  You reach something like an enlightenment state when you become an elderly, right? If I reach elderly stage early on, I wonder what lies beyond that stage. What is the stage after late adulthood?

C: If I get to serialise my manga in YJ, will I be able to meet you, Sensei?

I: I’m not sure. I may not go to the party anymore. If we were to come across each other, then yeah. But I’m this kind of person. If I feel creeped out by you, I’d say that. (laughs)

I: This is just a way to rationalise prejudice, but to prevent yourself from getting hurt, you say this and that. And then they pile up and become prejudice. Because you’ve been hurt, you develop a prejudice. In other words, I’m prejudice because I’ve been scarred.  

Ishida’s advice on love

C: My friend and I have a crush on the same person! My friend and love, which one should I choose?

I: This one is difficult. I knew a lady who chose love over friendship. In the end, she ended up with neither. There are people who choose friendship. However, if you like that person so much…The worst that could happen is you end up being hated by your friend. But they aren’t dating yet, right? The person I knew stole someone else’s boyfriend, so obviously she’d be hated. It depends on how close you are with your friend in the end. If you were hated by your friend, you could still date with the guy. However, if you’re gonna be together with your friend for a long time, then maybe you should choose your friend, but they might start dating eventually. If you’re okay with just watching from afar, then… Hmm… This is tough.

C: It depends on your relationship with your friend.

I: That’s right. If you could discuss it with your friend, maybe she’d understand.

C: I think there will be distance between them either way.

I: Ah… It’ll be hard for this girl if her friend and the guy she likes start dating.  Liking the same person as your friend… I never experienced it, so I’ll use my imagination. Even small things can decide the direction of your life. If you choose to back out every time something like this happens, you’d be this kind of person for the rest of your life. But if you insist on not wanting to become a horrible person, it’s okay for you to choose to be that, but it’s your life. It’s not like you’re living for your friend. It’s good that you don’t want to be a horrible person, but if you don’t be honest to your friend, you might not be able to express your opinion later in the future. It’s just a guess though. That’s why, I think it’s better if you tell your friend properly about your feelings. Even more so if your friend is really important to you. If you talk about it with your friend, your relationship with her might improve. On the other hand, if she’s not really a close friend, and you don’t wanna be seen as a horrible person by the people around you, well of course this is important as well, but you might not be able to do things you really wanna do later in your life because you’re scared of people’s opinion. It all comes down to which life is better for you. Whether you choose a life where you hold back yourself because you don’t wanna be a horrible person, or you choose to be horrible now and try experience stuffs you want. This is my opinion on the matter.

C: It’s hard to choose the option you won’t regret.

I: That’s right. There will always be regrets. What you’d do after you come to terms with your regret is important. You’d regret either way. You can’t help but hurt someone with your decision. It all depends on how you hurt them.

I: People who do the survey submit it every week, I think. I’m just a newbie to Young Jump’s veteran readers. They might hate me, thinking I got ahead of myself. It’s hard to beat them unless we get non YJ readers to read YJ.

C: Is there any reward for you if you rank first in the poll?

I: Nope, but the editorial department will know. It might be a good memory for them. They might take better care of me. But the YJ staffs are taking care of me currently. They are, like, giving me special treatment. I’m being totally spoiled by them. I feel really bad doing the manga based on my pace. Usually, it’s supposed to be serialised in the magazine. I selfishly requested for it to be online. But then, I wanna be spoiled more by them. I’m gonna compensate for the time, where I never got the chance to be pampered. When I’m spoiled, I’ll be in high spirits. Then, I can share the energy with everyone. I’ll feel like doing my best.

C: You said you’re doing the manga on your own pace, but you sure work fast.

I: I haven’t updated the chapter yet this month, but I’ve cut out some of the drafts. And I cut around 2 volumes worth of drafts. I’m working hard right now. I think it’s going well according to my plan. If I continue with my plan, I can go for 80 pages a month. I’m drawing all the drafts by myself in a weekly pace. I wanna say more about me doing the manga all by myself, but someone in the chat once told me that I’m annoying for bragging about it. I was like “what’s wrong with that? Since it's really hard to do them all by myself.” But then, that has nothing to do with them. Well, it’s just that I’ve worked that much and I’m very proud of it.

C: Are you not gonna hire an assistant?

I: I did think of hiring assistant at one point. When I came down with a fever during the part of the 2nd volume, I thought it’d be good if I had an assistant at times like this. So, I had around 2 people helping me for a day. It’s not a bad thing if I had assistants, but I wanna try drawing it alone.

C: How’s your fever?

I: It’s okay. I suddenly got a fever. My temperature was around 38 degrees Celsius. I already panicked. I thought it was Covid-19. But I got better after a day.

C: I’ll be your maid.

I: That’s good. I’ll hire everyone who can be maids and made a harem out of it. I’ll have around 20 maids in my work studio. I’ll hire men young or old as well. I’ll have 20 maids with their outfit standing upright behind me. (laughs) Then, I must be able to work hard, since I’ll get scared by the maids. I’ll make a news with that.

C: It’ll be great to sleep while being surrounded by ladies.

There might be people who buy it for the gravure idols. But then, it’s a bit embarrassing for ladies and those in high school and university to buy the magazine. I think it’s good to make a lot of embarrassing memories. It’s not a bad thing to have people think you’re buying an erotic magazine. Imagining that is fun.

SY: I’ve just realised it, but I don’t like grotesque stuffs.

I: Really? You don’t?

C: Can you read TG if you don’t like grotesque stuffs?

I: I don’t think TG was that grotesque.

SY: I couldn’t read the manga Zanki x 99.

I: I don’t know that manga. It seems grotesque from the name itself. I also won’t deliberately read manga that are too grotesque.

C: I couldn’t stand the fracturing sound in TG live-action*

I: Well, I didn’t supervise the movie.

C: I like grotesque like the one in I Am a Hero.

I: That movie was still okay.

C: I might be bad with Korean movies.

I: Korea really doesn’t hold back when it comes to the depiction of violence. I think it’s cool.

C: Sensei, have you watch Midsommar? I couldn’t handle the grotesque.

I: I did.

C: I don’t like movies that feel despair.

I: I see.

I: Midsommar is gory. With the brain splattered and all.

C: Sensei, have you watch a movie called The House That Jack Built?

I: No, I haven’t.

SY: It’s hard for me to watch death-game genres.

I: Then you can’t watch Saw? The first movie is the best.

C: Have you watched a movie called Heinous?

I: I might have. Is it the one with Lily Franky? Lily Franky and Pierre Taki usually star in movies together.

Ishida on anime/live-action adaptations

*Ishida said news about a Japanese anime producer kept on appearing on his feed. People in the chat were also the same.

C: I report it when it irritates me.

I: I won’t report though, but it does indeed irritate me. If they did that (showing the same news to everyone), then everyone will know the same thing. If it can become a topic of conversation, it’s fine, but don’t you think it becomes more suffocating to live? It’s hard for me. It feels like living in a pokeball.

C: I don’t like Tokyo Revengers being mainstream, since I’m a veteran reader like Sensei.

I: I don’t think of myself as a veteran reader, but I thought the anime would be famous, so I drew the illustrations beforehand. If you’ve been following the manga from the beginning, then you can call yourself a veteran reader. I think ‘veteran’ is a big word. If you’ve been reading his works from Shinjuku Swan phase or from his debut work, then you can claim yourself to be a veteran reader. When I see the veteran readers and the bandwagon-fans fight each other, I find it pointless*. Isn’t this happening to all mainstream stuffs? Veteran readers will be pissed off anyway when things get mainstream. That’s just how the world works.

C: I’m HxH veteran reader.

I: I’m scared to call my self as a veteran reader of HxH. There might be people who’ve read it longer than me. There’s always a hierarchy for everything. I might be killed by the person above me. In conclusion, don’t be bothered with those stuffs (veteran/ new readers).

C: I work in a bookstore, and there’s a lot of people shoplifting Tokyo Revengers manga.

I: (laughs) It’s better for you to call them out. You should scold them properly. (laughs) That’s totally unacceptable. (laughs) They’ve become bad guys.

C: I prefer to mix with people who are into the story after the popularity has died down.

I: I understand that a little.

C: Lately, delinquents riding motorcycles have increased.

I: Seriously? Is it the manga influence?

C: Mainstream tends to become a business.

I: Well, of course. Manga is a business in the first place. Animal Rap is also a business. I’m making a lot of money from the stamps.

C: I don’t like when a manga becomes mainstream when it’s adapted into an anime.

I: I see. I can’t understand that feeling, since I’m not an avid anime watcher. But then, I probably don’t watch the mainstream ones. I just thought it’s a good thing that a manga becomes popular due to its anime.

C: Meaning, not liking when the manga gets animated and gets attention?

I: It’s hard for a manga to get attention without getting animated. How many readers a manga have before it gets animated? But then, there are people who feel like that. I hate either way. (laughs) I hate when it gets animated, and I hate when people are against it. It’s a difficult subject. People act like that because they feel strongly about the manga. It’s a form of affection. There might be people who hate seeing their beloved stuffs turn into something else. As for me, for instance, if they were to make a Hollywood movie of HxH and mess it up, even though I’m a fan of the work, I won’t hate it, since I love HxH. I can accept it. It’s not like it (original story) has changed. That’s what I think.

C: As for me, it might be something close to possessiveness.

I: Yup. I do understand when people hate on the adaptation though.

C: In the end, only believe in the things you love.

I: It’s more peaceful when your feeling about a manga stays the same despite it being made into anime or movie. The HxH that I felt in my heart exist, so I couldn’t care less about what people say. It’s not like I’m watching it (anime/movie) anyway. But I do understand people reaction regarding them.

C: It doesn’t matter what other people say as long as I like it.

I: I think that’s the healthiest way of thinking about it. It’s the same like the ocean. No matter how much weight you put, you can never stop the flowing ocean. It’s difficult to influence other people’s will and enjoyment according to ours. There’s nothing you can do about it. If I were irritated by it, I’ll just live inside my own bubble.

C: Some anime have terrible animations. I wonder how the manga readers feel about that.

I: When I see terrible animations, I thought to myself ‘if there are animators who are good at drawing, there must also be animators who aren’t’. There are all sorts of people in the industry.

(t/n: I can’t agree enough with what he said. My sister’s an animator, so sometimes she shows me some of the drawings drawn by the key animators, and some of the drawings are terrible. My sister has to fix them a lot of times. And sometimes when the drawings are already good, they go and ‘fix’ them. It’s hilarious to see the drawing comparison.)
