Name:  Mr. Ripley Torres (Rip) Position:   Football coach Age:  Somewhere in his twenties Height:  5' 10.5" Appearance:  Rip has a very square build. He's wide at the shoulders and all around a rather bulky guy. His jawline is equally as square as his body, causing him to look almost comical with his ears that stick out  from the sides. His skin is a ruddy tan, and rough, particularly on his wide hands. His hair is black and spiky, and he likes to gel it into three fauxhawks. He also likes to keep a  soul patch growing on his chin, when he's not required to be clean-shaven. His eyes are heavy-set and dark brown, and his eyebrows are bushy. He likes to dress in sports clothing on all occasions - a slightly snug tee-shirt, gym shorts or sweat pants, and his beloved sneakers. He always looks ill-suited in formal clothing.

Rip is a bro, both self-proclaimed and in action. He refers to most people as "dude" or "man," regardless of gender, except for when it comes to his superiors such as the principal and dean, who he refers to as "sir" or "ma'am." He is very friendly and isn't afraid to clap anyone on the shoulder or give them a pat on the back. He likes to be on a first name or nickname basis with everyone, and isn't afraid of having anyone call him Rip. He especially likes to be close with his team, and expects them all to come to him if they're having any troubles in life, from girl (or guy) problems to family troubles to anything else. Especially girl problems.

Name:  Ms. Seizly Aeurda Age:  36 Height:  5'10" Appearance:  tall, androgynous, very fit, short blond hair

Ms. Aeurda is a woman who has clearly had too much life experience in too little time, with three kids, a questionable background and a personality to match. She is unbreakable, unbendable, and she will make you put your all into gym class. Despite all this, under her iron exterior she really cares very deeply for her students. She takes her responsibilities very seriously, and if you asked her why she does this job, she’d answer simply, “For them.”

Name:  Mr. Amiri Felix Age:  33 Height:  6’1” Appearance:  tall, brown haired, nondescript, enjoys the color lavender 

Mr. Amiri, who goes by his first name to avoid confusion, was adopted into the Felix family after the death of his parents. He is a very serious man on the outside and on the inside for the most part. He is not the most interesting History teacher and tends to drone a bit, though he has trouble admitting this to himself, despite Vamil Felix’s constant assurance that it really is that bad. He means well though, and despite his unapproachable demeanor is genuinely well meaning at heart.

Here are the PE uniforms for HCCH. The uniforms are unisex. You can either wear shorts or sweatpants.

Name:  Mr. Vamil Felix Position:  Physics Age:  32 Height:  5’8” Appearance:   Glasses, scruffy black hair, generally clean-shaven, but not always. 

Mr. Felix is a very gregarious person but a serious teacher. It is still very easy though to poke through to his more fun loving side in class. He has a lot of energy to spare, in sharp contrast to his best friend/adopted brother Amiri and his older sister Vamif, both fellow teachers at HCCH. He has another younger sister, a wife, and three kids. There is a small collection of automatons on his desk, which he makes in his spare time.

Fraternizing with the Enemy

Name:  Dr. Emily Sadria Position:  Chemistry Age:  late 30s to early 40s Height:  average Appearance:  Dr. Sadria is a pleasant looking woman with a perpetual half-smile. Her dark hair is always kept in a neat bun and she typically wears a white lab coat over her tastefully floral print dresses when teaching a class. Her face bears the faint lines of a woman who is ageing quite gracefully. 

Why a licensed physician is settling for a high school teacher’s pay check is anyone’s guess, and lots of people are guessing, but Dr. Sadria seems quite content with her job at HCCH. She tries to impress upon her students the importance of chemistry and the other sciences in helping all of humanity. However, when it comes to people as individuals, she has a habit of playing favorites. No one knows why she picks who she does, but certain students will find attention and assistance lavished upon them, while those at the next lab station will be woefully neglected. Or so they claim. Since none of the “favored” students has ever issued a complaint—in fact some seem to worship the ground she stands on—the good doctor continues happily about her business.

First Impressions

Kelsey Yamamoto. When Ross had seen the name on his tutoring assignment, he had envisioned a shy foreign student, soft-spoken and bashful, wishing to become as eloquent in written English as she was in speaking.

The decidedly non-Asian ponytailed girl with the rumpled uniform and mud-splattered shoes who let herself into the study room must be in the wrong place.

“Hey,” she said, “you here for tutoring too?” She dropped her book bag on the ground beside her feet. Her knee-high socks were slouching, Ross noticed; her left calf was half exposed. A runner, maybe? Or it could be swimming. What did she do to get legs like that?

She was looking at Ross as if she expected him to say something. He realized he’d forgotten her question. Time to improvise. “Are you Kelsey?”

“Ace.”

Either Ross’s synapses were not firing correctly or the girl was speaking nonsense.

She put her hand on her hips and Ross watched her shoulders moved under her shirt. Must be a swimmer. Only a swimmer could be that lean and muscled all over. “My legal name is Kelsey. I go by Ace.”

“Oh.” Ross made a note of this on the paper, because he felt like he should be doing something other than staring at her.

“Wait. Are you my tutor?”

Ross looked up to Ace was looking at him like he’d just fallen out of the ceiling. “Um, yeah.”

“But I thought you played football!”

“Contrary to popular belief, football players do know more than just ‘hut, hut, hike.’”

Ace giggled and Ross completely lost where that train of thought had been going. “So, uh…we were supposed to take a look at an essay.”

Ace groaned and flopped down in a chair across the table from him. “Yeah, this stupid thing we had to write the first day. Who assigns an essay the first day?”

“Do you have it with you?”

She ducked down to get it out of her bag. Ross’s mental capacities benefited greatly from the fact that any view he might have had of her was blocked by the table. Ace resurfaced and pushed a crumpled paper across the table at him.

The essay was entitled, “What I read This Summer – Automotive Technology: A Systems Approach.”

It began, “This summer I read Automotive Technology: A Systems approach. It is a book about cars and how they work. I need to know how cars work because…”

Ross quickly put down the paper and looked at Ace. “Tell me about the assignment.”

“Well,” said Ace, looking up at the ceiling like she was concentrating, “we were supposed to write about a book we read this summer and how it,” she fished for the word, “influenced us.”

“And did your teacher tell you why she was sending you to tutoring?”

“I think she thought I didn’t take it seriously, but I did! That’s the book I read this summer.”

The book. Ouch. They were going to have to work on that. Later. When more of his brain was back online.

“I think,” said Ross, “she may have sent you for some work on your writing.”

“What do you mean?”

“For a start, you can make your sentences more complicated. Vary the sentence structure, you know?”

Ace kind of squinted at him. Her nose wrinkled ever so slightly as she did. “Uh huh.”

“Okay, look at the first sentence.” He pointed it out to her and Ace examined it upside down for a moment. Before he could say anything, she sat back up and started scooting her chair around the corner of the table until she was viewing the page from the side.

“So if you take this sentence,” Ross began but Ace interrupted.

“Nah, still can’t see.” She pulled her chair around until she was on his side of the table, her seat just inches from his. “Okay, go.”

“Well, you can take the first two sentences and combine them. Say ‘This summer I read Automotive Technology: A Systems Approach, which is a book about how cars work.’”

Ace stared at the page as if it contained the mysteries of the universe in pig Latin. “ But that means the exact same thing.”

“Well, yeah. But it sounds better.”

She looked at him. “Why?”

Ross met her eyes. They were a perfectly colorless gray, like the winter sky back home in Kansas. Clearing his throat, Ross turned his attention back to the essay before him.

“It...just does. Here, look at the second sentence.” Ace did as he said, leaning him. He could feel her breath on his arm. Persevering on, Ross read, “‘I need to know how cars work because I got hired at Jerry’s Automotive and Jerry said I should read this book, so I did.’”

“That’s a good complicated sentence,” said Ace.

“Well, it’s…it’s…” Ross looked at her. “You work at Jerry’s?”

 “Yeah, I’ve been there almost three weeks now.”

“And you fix cars?”

Ace turned towards him, a serious look on her face. “Not on my own yet. I’ve got Jerry or one of the boys looking over my shoulder the whole time, but he says if I keep on doing like I’m doing, I’ll be flying solo by November.”

“Wow, that’s…that’s pretty cool.”

Ace smiled at him, a slightly lopsided smile that pulled up a little more on the left than it did on the right. “Thanks. Now would probably be a terrible time to say I really don’t know what your name is.”

“Oh, uh, Ross.”

“Right! With the funny Polish last name. Something-ski.”

“That’s me.”

The smile broadened. “Well, nice to meet you Ross.” She held her hand, a bit of an awkward gesture since they were less than a foot apart.

“You too, Ace.” He took her hand. She had a strong grip for a girl, although Ross knew his little sister would kill him for saying that.

He was also fairly certain that handshakes weren’t supposed to last this long, but Ace wasn’t pulling away. Her smile softened, her lips parted…

“Aren’t we supposed to finish up at half past?” she said.

Ross looked up at the clock on the wall. “Shit. I’ve got practice in five.”

Ace slipped her hand out of his. “Better get going, huh?”

Dammit, he’d totally creeped her out. What was with that hand holding thing? Why couldn’t he just let go of her? Ross floundered around, gathering up his bag and letter jacket. “I’m sorry we didn’t get much done.”

“That’s okay. Maybe we could do it again sometime.”

Ross looked at her. Ace had her elbow on the table and her chin resting on her hand. She looked up at him. “You know, tutoring.”

“Uh, yeah.” Word spun madly in Ross’s head. Thursday? Tomorrow? Tonight right after practice? “Same time next week?”

“I was thinking maybe Thursday.”

“Sure! Ah, no. No, I can’t I have a game. Sorry.”

Ace waved away the apology. “Don’t be sorry. What time is the game?”

“Seven.”

“And what number jersey are you?”

“Um, twenty-four.”

She grinned. “Okay, I’ll see you there.”

“You’ll…”

“It’s open to the public, isn’t it?”

“Yes.”

“Okay, then I’ll be there. I’ll make a big sign that says, ‘Go #24!’”

Words were not happening in Ross’s brain.

Ace giggled. “Shouldn’t you get going?”

“Right. Yeah. Sounds good. Okay. Bye.”

As Ross shut the door behind him, he could still hear her laughter. And even if she was laughing at him, he didn’t mind. Hearing her laugh made him want to laugh too.

Name:  Mr. Daniel Green (Danny) Position:  Chemistry Age:  Thirties Height:  5'5" Appearance:   Danny will always be on the scrawny side, despite his best efforts to the contrary. He is on the shorter side for a male, which doesn't help him much. However, his good posture and the way he carries himself makes this easy to miss. He always dresses rather formally, and will always wear a tie and dress shoes to work, even on casual days. Even his winter wear is formal, and he always wears a scarf in the cold months. Danny's skin is pale and incapable of tanning, with several freckles that multiply in the sun. These become particularly noticeable across his nose and cheeks in the summer. His face is narrow with a sharp chin. He keeps it clean shaven at all times. He has a widow's peak, which is normally covered by his long bangs which he swirls back across his forehead, but is plain to see when he slicks all of his hair back. His hair is a light sandy brown, and shorter in the back. His eyes are a deep, dark blue, and deep set with prominent lids.

Danny is highly organized and a sharp, logical thinker. He prides himself in his professionally, and tends to come off as distant from his coworkers and students. The exception is of course his wife, Felicia. He loves the sciences almost as much as he loves her, and brings a certain enthusiasm to his work despite his distance from his pupils.

Unhappy Coincidence

Name:  Mrs. Vamif Newell Position:  Biology Age:  34 Height:  5’7” Appearance:   Soft figure, wavy black hair, dresses unintentionally out of style

Mrs. Newell was once a Felix, in fact the oldest of the four Felix siblings, until she got married to her husband Elliot. She specializes in zoology, but can teach all sub-subjects of biology, and does so here at HCCH. She is known as a bit of a push-over, and has a hard time getting students to settle down in class. Still, she is a kind soul, always lending a hand to the quiet, struggling ones, and is generally regarded as very endearing, if a tad awkward.
