Happy birthday, Sailor V!!! The girl who started it all 🩷🩷🩷
Knowing you have a TON of Sailor Moon references hiding in your massive archive, do you perhaps have an image of Setsuna from around the beginning of Stars during the Nehelenia Arc where she wears that one outfit with her blazer and pants? I'm trying to find a high quality image but having no luck for a crossover drawing I am working on.
Here you go, queen!
I was just browsing Yahoo Auctions Japan and came across this artwork I've never seen before! Apparently it's a rare promotional cardboard piece used to advertise the Sailor Moon gashapons pictured. Funnily enough, I actually own the Neo-Queen Serenity figure.

Fun fact: In Japan, a cultivar of yellow orchid was created in the 90s and was named "Happy Valley Sailor Moon."
It's a hybrid flower that was named after Sailor Moon because the botanist who created it, Shigeru Makoto Kono, thought that the flower’s yellow color matched the color of Usagi’s hair. Naoko Takeuchi herself received these flowers and was so happy with them she decided to incorporate them in several artworks (as revealed in the linear notes of Sailor Moon Artbook Volume 5).

You can definitely learn to dress as cute and fashionable! Usagi wears lots of pastels, frills, and youthful colours, but also comfortable clothes like hoodies, over-sized tops, and shorts, feminine dresses and skirts... more cute than sultry. Lace petticoats under skirts definitely add to the Usagi look, as well as rabbit and/or moon-themed prints and details, if not floral! Big, showy bows add a childish and whimsical touch, and lots of lace, ruffles, and frills for sweeter looks. ♡
You can learn to dress for your body type as the stars do by learning your Kibbe type! It's not about weight, but bone structure. Weight gain is accounted for and does not change your type.
(A very nice Sailor Moon style guide for Usagi by CTALA784.)
As an additional note, Takeuchi Naoko's art style is influenced by her love of high fashion and she draws in a style reminiscent to fashion croquises (which tend to be skinny with extremely long legs taking up about 2/3rds of height, a trait some people have genetically, but certainly isn't the norm for everyone... and they tend to be idealized 8 to 10 head tall figures!!), so she doesn't draw much variety in body types, but she originally intended for the Senshi to have different body types!
Usagi's oeiginally envisioned to be short and a bit chubby. ^^ Makoto is tall and more muscular. Minako is average. Rei and Ami are slender.
She also has a complex about having small breasts, even if it's inconsistently portrayed (and might be hard to tell with the breastplate the Sailor Senshi wear, but that's armour and even Chibimoon has it, while ahe's obviously still flat without it as Chibiusa.)
Fashion croquises look like this!
Hence the Sailor Moon art style.
A lovely blog that lists out different outfits in the Sailor Moon mamga, 90's anime, and Crystal is @silvermoon424, particularly the Senshi Fashion tag.
You can all be pretty in your own way, even if everyone can feel insecure sometimes, even Sailor Moon!
Thanks for the shout out! Some other amazing sources for Sailor Moon fashion are @sailorcivilian and @fukufashion btw!
Didn't Sailor Stars originally plan on using an anime-original outfit for Usagi, before deciding to go with the manga's Eternal look? I think that outfit had a French name or something.
That’s correct! Although as far as I know, the design was never given a name. It’s known informally by fans as “Fukano Moon.” The name comes from Youichi Fukano, an illustrator and character designer who worked on Sailor Moon and designed Sailor Moon’s potential look.
(second image comes from Three Lights, who has scans of a number of Fukano’s other works as well)
Personally, I think the design is absolutely beautiful and I love how it incorporates elements of both Eternal Sailor Moon and Neo-Queen Serenity’s designs. I think it would have acted as a cool bridge between Usagi’s Sailor Moon and Neo-Queen Serenity forms. Oh well, I still like Eternal Sailor Moon’s design.
EDIT: This design was actually called "Sailor Moon La Cygne" or "Sailor Moon Swan"!
