Fantasy Chicken question- I usually reference bantams (because I know people who have or had them)

If a chicken had the magical ability to find treasure, would it be what humans consider treasure (money) or what THEY consider treasure (bugs, eggs, etc?). A mix?

...What would chickens consider treasure

I think it would be fat juicy grubs and worms.

However chickens are birds and birds like shiny things so maybe a character that likes shiny coins. Chickens dont have great beak dexterity so they arent as well known for it compared to corvids since they almost never carry non food objects.

Honestly i wonder if Beepers pale wattle and comb read as androgynous to other chickens and thats part of the reason why so many roosters are immediately aggressive towards her when meeting her for the first time.

do you think if chickens were sapient and self-aware, they'd pierce their wattles the way humans pierce their ears?

(This topic is about anthro and fantasy chickens not real chickens)

Unlike our ears which are mostly cartilage, wattles are fleshy, have a very high blood supply, and are packed with nerve endings.

A piercing there would be VERY difficult to heal proper and prone to infection. Unfortunately I could easily pull up irl chickens who have suffered piercing-like injuries through their wattles and they never heal nicely or all the way through from what I have seen. Some chickens tend to produce a lot of keratin-like growths on their comb and wattles on or near the injury site as well which could add another layer of complication to healing.

I know this is tragic information for those furries out there whose chicken characters have pierced or gauged combs and wattles. However keep doing whatever makes you happy with your designs.

I think in an anthropomorphic society I feel as though those kind of body mods on chicken WOULD still be possible but they would be seen as a more on the "extreme" side of body mods since it would require surgery and long term healing to get the desired look. I think it would be on par with dubbing which strangely I rarely if ever see people with chicken characters who have been dubbed which is the removal of the comb and wattles.

I personally think anthro chickens would be more interested in changing their feather color and appearance/shape especially since their feathers can be used to infer gender. I think spur and tail accessories would be thing as well.

I do think there are 2 piercings a chicken could get if they desired. One would be their version of a septum piercing where a piece of jewelry loops through their nares. We already have an analog with Peepers. The other would be wingbands because again we already have an analog irl.

Today silkie breeders raging out at each other over project colors but they are arguing about colors that were orginally project colors themselves. Today's world ending enemy is the buff mottled birds.

You got people saying things like "Buff Mottled" isnt "real" because Buff is a solid color and Mottling breaks up the color with white 🤣

Any color can be mottled. Think of mottling in chickens like piebald in other animals it just removes pigment in patches and doesnt actually change the base color.

Orginally waaaaay back in time Silkies basically came in one color and that was Recessive White. Buff, Blue, Chocolate, Dominant White ect were all project colors until they were accepted into the SOP in their various categories.

The main gripe Im hearing people complain about is that mottling messes with the expression of the fm gene (fibromelanosis) but the same can be said for other popular project genes such as barring. If everything about the silkie fits the standard of perfection do we really need to be obsessed with the expression of fibro when these genes directly affect and lighten skin pigment? If a buff silkie is on the wrong base color it also can have its skin lightened. These are just the natural affect of the genes BUT there is one thing these people are missing..

Unlike barring or other genes Mottling can be selected for in its presentation! A bird who is hyper mottled is going to have more lightening then a bird who is more conservatively marked. When the mottling isnt expressing the skin should be just as dark and could theoretically still be used to judge its SOP especially since you can run a solid color pen and mottling pen at the same time.

Anyway thats your niche chicken drama for the day. You get breeders pearl clutching and whining like they dont have "paint" breeding pens themselves. My opinion is thay breeders should care more about their breeds health and stop being stop obsessed with color. I have been seeing more and more silkies with severe brain hernias and vaults, that will always be way more problematic to me then color!

Anyway here is a localish breeder to me and a Red Mottled silkie she produced. It does have bad skin color but its obviously a silkie and wont end the world lol

Terms for this post - Labhorn: Labratory strain of Leghorns (i made the word labhorn up)

Some thing I was really interested in with the Labhorns was comparing their growth and size differences since they are already the perfect candidates due to being lab chickens. This is such a small sample size so be aware that this is mostly for fun, observation, and speculation.

So me and my landlady got 4 labhorns each. She ended up with 3 cockerels and 1 pullet and I got 3 pullets and 1 cockerel. A perfect 50/50 split for our 8 all together. Only 3 birds were culled in total.

My landlady fed hers Grubbly Farms 18% All Flock Crumbles

I fed mine Naturewise Silkie and Ornamental Starter Grower with 24% protein.

Things to note.

My landlady's birds were smaller in weight, size, and bone length.

My landlady's were also paler skiined and not as yellow.

All culled birds were healthy and had no organ abnormalities.

All culled birds had healthy typical fat deposits and muscling.

My birds were on grass daily in their run and moved to fresh grass often.

Landlady's were confined to a bedded run with supervised free ranging time.

My landlady's had a potent chicken/gamey flavor in the legs likely due to their activity since my boy was a bit lazier.

Down below will be a picture of my cockerel on the right and my landlady's on the left. The birds were culled using the broomstick method. There is no blood or gore just two chickens laying next to each other.

Id like you to pay attention to the size of the heads, body, and leg length compared to each other. These size differences to me really goes to show how much their feed can effect a birds growth and development.
