Terms for this post - Labhorn: Labratory strain of Leghorns (i made the word labhorn up)

Some thing I was really interested in with the Labhorns was comparing their growth and size differences since they are already the perfect candidates due to being lab chickens. This is such a small sample size so be aware that this is mostly for fun, observation, and speculation.

So me and my landlady got 4 labhorns each. She ended up with 3 cockerels and 1 pullet and I got 3 pullets and 1 cockerel. A perfect 50/50 split for our 8 all together. Only 3 birds were culled in total.

My landlady fed hers Grubbly Farms 18% All Flock Crumbles

I fed mine Naturewise Silkie and Ornamental Starter Grower with 24% protein.

Things to note.

My landlady's birds were smaller in weight, size, and bone length.

My landlady's were also paler skiined and not as yellow.

All culled birds were healthy and had no organ abnormalities.

All culled birds had healthy typical fat deposits and muscling.

My birds were on grass daily in their run and moved to fresh grass often.

Landlady's were confined to a bedded run with supervised free ranging time.

My landlady's had a potent chicken/gamey flavor in the legs likely due to their activity since my boy was a bit lazier.

Down below will be a picture of my cockerel on the right and my landlady's on the left. The birds were culled using the broomstick method. There is no blood or gore just two chickens laying next to each other.

Id like you to pay attention to the size of the heads, body, and leg length compared to each other. These size differences to me really goes to show how much their feed can effect a birds growth and development.

When put into direct sunlight chickens enter their liquid form and proceed to melt.

Terms for this post-

Easter Egger: a chicken with mixed genetics that lays an egg that is some shade of blue, green, or brown.

I think its funny that the public just assumes beard in a chicken = blue egg layer or other form of Easter egger.

The beard gene Mb only needs one copy to express and there are plenty of bearded breeds out there that could contribute to a random bred chicken's genetics. Bearded Polish, Silkies, and D'uccles to name a few.

On the flip side people seem to think birds who arent bearded cant be Easter eggers lol to be an Easter egger all the bird has to do is lay a colored egg ideally in a blue or green shade preferably.

Know go out into the world with your new chicken knowledge that Easter Eggers can look like anything as long as they lay a pretty egg.

I want to remind everyone that it is likely your favorite chicken breed is only 3-5 breeders away (SOMETIMES LESS!!) from losing their quality stock population. By getting into chicken breeding you can be a protector of that breed's quality so it doesnt get messed up via mass production by hatcheries.

If your favorite breed isnt a cochin, silkie, OEGB, or wyandotte bantam your breed could genuinely use another breeder and you can be the one help shape them. This is especially important to keep in mind because a lot of the established breeders are aging out of chicken keeping so people need to be there who are willing to step up to be stewards.

My opinion on the Warrior cats game they announced is that it looks like poorly made Unity Slop. I am not excited and I think the cats look ugly. 🫡

Edit- also I mean warriors does not really have a good track record when it comes to quality games... really its the fan made games that are good at actually emulating the books. I wish warriors would also just get a specific art style and stick to it. Why not make the game characters look like the new graphic novels and not a typical Unity style cat.

For such a huge comb he doesn't have purple edges, like I've seen on some birds. Good circulation?

Sometimes in cockerels a bit of purple is just hormones but if the comb is heavy, floppy, and/or starts to deflate at the ends that's a sign of circulation issues or that the comb is to big.

"If" im to keep a leghorn rooster I want one with an upright comb which eliminates all the cockerels except for Big Meat. The real tricky part with huge combs is preventing injury and frostbite in the winter. The floppy comb doesnt apply to the hens though a good leghorn hen has her cute flop like Greenie Weanie.

That is if I actually keep one long term, the one I ate yesterday was very tasty lol and Ibis x Leghorn chicks would be dominant white and Pumpkin....
