Appreciation for a decent lifestyle:
The lost history of Brownsville, Texas, Abandoned downtown ruins that were once lively, Alleyways of the mouth, Sidewalks of the south, Sweat-soaked white tank tops And work uniforms, Dirt marks And oil patches, Fast muscle cars, Big pickup trucks, Rusted wheelchairs, And the little wheeled cart with a faint rainbow colored squared bag of fresh foods, Elote vans with their megaphones, Raspa stands with their icy cones, Hot sauces and spices upon sweet snacks, Handled lard, And tortilla grease dripping onto our licked-clean plates, Quinceaneras that sport traditional dancing and tacky DJs, Mexican punks’ admiration for Morrissey, Tejano tunes Playing through rolled-down windows Or ajar house doors Of elderly vatos Sitting outside their porch On their home bench With a cold beer Taped to their grab And flashbacks branded Into their fried brains Alongside sprinkles of salt, Sliced limons, And peppered peanuts On a sticky ashtray table From all the spilt liquor And burned cigarettes Needed during hard times Before the well-deserved peaceful moment After a life of exhaustion and combat.
No room for nostalgia. Settlement feels necessary.
But this is home, This is home. And I never knew why I wanted to escape this place Until I did. The return journey was unexpected, Yet it felt right.
The beloved tradition of taquerias in Brownsville, on display for all to see.
Southmost tacos getting some recognition on Texas Monthly :)
Hey! I'll be traveling down to Texas specifically Brownsville area for spring break from Wisconsin and just wondering what's there to do. Really anything fun or places to see would help. Thanks!
While in Brownsville you might want to take advantage and enjoy some authentic Mexican food! There's plenty of local restaurants, such as, Ricardo's, El Pedregal, Las Cazueltitas, Emilia's, Kiki's, Toodles,... these are just to name a few lol. For tacos there's some great joints too. Try Ultimo Taco, Marcelo's, Otro Rollo.. (anything on Southmost street actually) There's the zoo some nice museums and La Pulga on the weekends for some more good food lol. Brownsville also has some chill places like Half Moon Saloon or Hueso de Fraile for chill live music. However, if you're coming during spring break the party is at South Padre Island. It's about 20-30mins from Brownsville. There's always something fun going on and lots of people from different places come down during this time to have a good time. Hope this helped. If any of my followers have some input on things to do in Brownsville feel free to do so :)
From a few weeks ago at CycloBia, a car-free street environment that allows people to bike, walk, play, and enjoy in different fun activities. It was a lot of fun! 😊😊
Downtown finds 😅
Brownsville, Texas
If anyone was wondering where exactly Brownsville is located in Texas. It does indeed border with Mexico.
If you haven't yet, go try this place out. I think it's called La Papa Escondida and they sell taquitos al vapor bien ricos👌 it's next to SAS shoe store on Price Rd. On that area where Convergy's used to be. 😋
A very shaky timelapse of the sunset at Dean Porter Park with music from, local band, Ideophonic.
Race and racism at the state soccer championship.
I remember this when it happened, even though at the time I was still in middle school, a few years later I began to attend Porter and became part of Porter Nation. I have to say, I really enjoyed reading this article, in my opinion, it is very inspiring. Also the fact that Oscar Casares wrote it is definitely a plus!
Interesting how the branches of a tree are similar to those of our lungs. A similar structure to preform a similar function, respiration. (@Washington Park)
Beautiful Brownsville skies 🌴🌆
