There’s a man in the woods.

He’s elusive. Quiet and blunt with his words, but not unkind.

You don’t know his name. Only what he looks like and what he, rarely, comes into town for.

He comes rumbling in with his 1982 ford truck that’s painted a shiny ruby red, though the clear coat has started to fade on the very top hood of the truck. Though, it’s always a little out of place when he leaves the butcher shop after being there all morning.

But it fits him. He’s handsome, you think every time you see him stroll through town.

The man has a light step for his stature, but confident. Almost like a predator stalking its prey.

Sometimes he comes into your shop, where you sell many apple related things. Mostly food. The only thing that gives the man away in your shop is the little bell above the door and the creaky floorboards that he offers to fix but you always turn down.

You always greet the man with a cheerful, “Hello, Stranger!” every time he comes in. And he always replies back with a quiet “hello” of his own or a sort of soft grunt. It’s not impolite though, it’s just him.

Sometimes your stranger buys things, but most of the time he doesn’t. He strolls through your little shop without a word. He always ends his visit at your counter though, asking about your day or offering to fix any flickering light or squeaky hinge.

You always turn him down, because you’d feel bad about taking advantage of his kindness. He says you wouldn’t, since he’s offering. You kindly wave the man off anyways.

Your stranger always stays to talk, sometimes a few minutes or sometimes more. He stays with a forearm leaned across your wooden counter and his dark brown eyes following you as you chatter and mill about. The man mostly listens, but he’ll chime in here and there.

Whenever a new customer comes in, your stranger straightens up to leave. Just before he does, he taps his knuckles twice against the wooden counter before sauntering out the door. The bell above signals his exit. He bids a quiet farewell before he gets too far away, and then the door shuts behind him.

You greet the new customer as your eyes watch your stranger, wondering just how lonely it is in those woods of his.
