Re:mix/use/style
It's fairly normal for me to wake up and think, I have nothing to wear. This is of course absurd, as that's far from the truth, but I tend to get incredibly bored with the state of my wardrobe, and always feel the need to purchase something new on a pretty regular basis. This sentiment is occasionally not possible or rather "wise" to tend to so I take to the web and/or print to find a bit of inspiration. I've discovered that it's not about what you're wearing but how you're wearing it. By that I mean we often have garments that are worn with particular others, with specific colors, textures, and accessories and we rarely wear them outside of those lines. It's easy to get bored with your clothing if it always looks the same. Unfortunately not everyone can just go out and purchase new garments every time they feel they have nothing to wear, so we're forced to deal, right? Wrong.
Change. That. Shit. Up.
There are a lot of incredibly stylish creative people in the world, and a lot of them tend to want to share that with you. It's super easy to find. Not only are there a ton of really great street fashion blogs that you can pull some ideas from but a lot of them are full of looks that are put together with really basic things that nearly everyone has. For example, there are websites like lookbook.nu that allows people to just post what they're wearing for the day. More than a few times I've browsed through lookbook, see a look that I really like and then realize, I own absolutely everything that the subject is wearing, I just never thought of wearing it that way. Maybe it's a certain wash/cut of jeans that you stopped liking, or rolled up sleeves to an old over-sized jacket or blazer but there's always a look in every man's closet that they didn't know was there.
I suggest giving it a shot. Peruse the web, get some inspiration and go into your closet and make it happen. Trust me, you'll be surprised with what you find.
I like everyone else nowadays, enjoys glasses. Yet I refuse to wear fake glasses. As a blind ass mother fucker, I'm offended by such visual imposters. But it's easy to tire of just wearing the same pair of glasses year around. I'm a fan of variety and options so why would I have just one pair of glasses? But glasses are on the expensive end, so I went in search of some cheaper option. My search led me to Zenni Optical and online optical site that has glasses starting at $6.95 including prescription. These are just a couple of pairs that I purchased just recently. They were only $9.95. All you need is your prescription and you're good to go. Check it out! www.zennioptical.com
21MEN buy one get one free sale! Check it online. Also DEFINITELY worth looking at in store. I just picked up two really nice bags for $12.99 for the lot. Originally $31.90 a piece!
Treat. Yo. Self.
So contrary to popular belief I actually abhor shopping. I spent a short stint of my life working for the man as a personal shopper and realized that I love everything about shopping besides the act of shopping itself. I'm a big fan of buying things and finding good deals, but will you see me perusing the racks for shit? Absolutely not. I'm in and I'm out. But for most people who don't really know what they're looking for, it's easy to spend way too much time in a store with very little to show for it. I find that it seems people go into shopping situations with no idea what they need to be looking for. This is not only a recipe for either a.) spending way too money on items that you definitely don't need or b.) not getting anything at all. Both are unacceptable.
But there is a better way. That way: online shopping.
I find that I get a weird amount of anxiety when it comes to purchasing things in stores. I always feel pressure to buy something, even when no one who works there actually acknowledges my existence. Perhaps it's just my overly anxiety ridden personality that facilitates this, but I can't help but think that others have the same problem.
Furthermore, I on principal rarely purchase any garments full price. I am a patient man when it comes clothes so I'll almost always wait for it to go on sale. Usually this means frequent visits to check up on stuff which just tends to get weird after a while. I used to have monthly visits with a coat I found at Neiman Marcus until it was cheap enough for me to justify buying.
Now when that sale actually comes, a problem arises. I cannot control myself when it comes to in store sales. If I see a sign that has anything 50% or higher marked off, I'll 9/10 times be buying several things. I justify it because its essentially a buy 1 get 2 free deal and I'm a sucker for a good deal. But enough about that. We're here to talk about online shopping.
So first, with online shopping there are some things you should look out for.
Purchasing suits online is not for novices.
Be super cautious when buying pants
Some things require being tried on. Suits are one thing that DEFINITELY need to be tried on. Only because most men have no idea what size suit they should be wearing therefore people almost always buy the wrong size. While I think getting items tailored are a very important aspect of a proper wardrobe (I will talk about this later), for some who are too lazy or cheap to do so you need to actually put it on to see how it fits. Most places I shop tend to fit me off the rack but this is not the case with most. Also pants, mainly jeans are almost never cut to their advertised size. So if you're adamant about doing so proceed with caution.
So I've included a few places to get started looking at. These places are a weekly visit.
TOPMAN
As previously asserted this place is one of my favorite shops. Not only is it great quality clothing, their garmets, shoes and accessories really cater to just about every kind of style. The online shop recently opened up in the US within the past year or so and they have some pretty ridiculous sales. You have to constantly monitor it because they're always changing things in and out. Furthermore, the website can be endlessly frustrating because some items which are sold out in the US are still in the queue of items because they're still available in the UK. This has led to SEVERAL hopes dashed on my part. But none the less it's always worth checking out.
ASOS
This is one of my absolute favorite websites. Asos is another British fashion retailer, only its soley offered online. They have their own (super reasonably priced) line but they also carry some higher end lines as well (everything from Alexander McQueen to Marc Jacobs), many of which go on sale pretty regularly. In fact I just purchased a pair of Marc by Marc Jacobs drop crotch pants for 75% off the retail price. Will I wear them? Who knows. Again, I'm a sucker for a deal. The selection is immense, the quality is great for the price and it's super easy to navigate. Great place to buy basics, like tees, socks, etc. There's also a super cool portion of the website called the Marketplace where users can sell used, vintage and handmade goods. Definitely worth checking out.
21Men
Most people have no idea that Forever21 has a menswear section. If I tell someone that I got something from here they almost always look at me like I'm crazy. While Forever21 and 21Men isn't synonymous for high quality, when it comes to be fashionable, they're pretty on target. While I usually only purchase summer clothes from here (tanks, v-necks etc.), their hats, bags, shoes, sunglasses and accessories always impress year around. I think for a college guy or a broke ass in general, low on funds who wants not look like a bro or a bum, this is your best place to start. First, because it's super cheap and secondly because it's really chic. Of course in a very manly way.
Honorable Mentions:
Urban Outfitters
Aldo Shoes
Zara (online store JUST opened in the US two months ago! Nothing on sale yet.)
So that's where I'd start gents. My course on navigating the trappings of Ebay is for another post as that's a whole different beast. Next we'll be discussing necessary items for a fall wardrobe. So go forth and find some good online deals and as Donna says Treat. Yo. Self.
TOPMAN (one of my favorite retailers) always has amazing deals to be found in store as well as online. Check it out! Great time to pick up some Spring and Summer gear.
What. It. Do.
So. I've decided to start a new blog. Why you ask? To be honest, because I don't think I've found a decent one that deals with my intended subject matter well, thus I'm just trying to do the right thing like Spike, so I've decided to give it a go.
What subject matter is that?
Menswear.
Menwear? Really? As if there aren't enough menswear related sites in the blogosphere already, right? Correct, BUT this, this is different. Essentially the goal is to focus on how to make oneself look like a million bucks, when you have about %5 of that. There are plenty of fantastic blogs and sites out there that bring so many great designers to any man with a computer screen and credit card, but almost all are well out of the price range that many can afford.
With the economy being the way that it is, most can't afford Jil Sanders BADASS Hermes leather boots (http://bit.ly/qPTYkH you HAVE to at least look at them) or Band of Outsiders chinos. But everyone can afford great style and that's what this blog is about. Great style that any guy can afford. Where to find it, when to look for it and what to look for. I find that I encounter a lot of guys who often think I spend a great deal money on clothing and they always seem to be surprised to find it is the opposite. While my wardrobe does consist of many pricier items there are so many items that I pay less than $20 for. I rarely ever buy anything full price because 1, I'm too much of a cheap ass and 2, I know with a little bit of patience and maybe a seasonal sale or two, I'll get it for much cheaper. Essentially, I'll just be bringing my daily cheap finds, sales, how to achieve a certain look on a small budget and how to work with what you have to make something happen. It's amazing what a little ingenuity and tailoring can do for someone's look.
One could justly argue that I'm known for two things: Being frugal and being stylish. So I figured why not share my mad skills with the masses. Hopefully I can show that there's no reason to look to look like a broke ass even if you are.
