These days, I've found myself stumbling into the world of Japanese geisha and reading books on them. My interest has been thoroughly sparked, and I've been getting fic ideas in my head.
Did you know that male geisha exist?
Well, because of that fact, I keep imagining the characters of 'K' (namely Yata, of course) as them. So, instead of working on my WIPs, I wrote a snippet of a fic I will write in the future.
I feel like I should give some background for this snippet. So, Totsuka is a former geisha who left the profession to marry Mikoto (happy late Mikototsu week), who is an important man. I'm not sure what his title will be yet, though. General, Chancellor, Baron?
Yata came into their care and has aspirations to become a geisha; Mikoto forbids the idea, but Totsuka sees how much Yata wants to be one, so he agrees to secretly mentor him. In this snippet, Totsuka is taking Yata to his old okiya (geisha house), where he introduces him to his past "mother" (what they call the woman who runs the okiya). Her name is Mrs. Kazuki. I just made her ass up.
Anyway, now that that's out of the way, hope you enjoy!
“I was the most desired in my geisha days,” said Mrs. Kazuki, a prideful grin on her face.
“In your geisha days?” Yata looked her up and down, paying special attention to her bumpy, wrinkled skin and her uneven gait. He had a tough time imagining her as a graceful, silk-laden geisha, thinking to himself: “That must have been a long time ago.”
Except he’d mistakenly said the words out loud.
Mrs. Kazuki whipped around, raising her cane with a snarl. She moved to swing it, aiming for his head, but Totsuka caught her hand in his, gently forcing it back down. He laughed sheepishly.
“Pay him no mind, Kazuki-san,” he said with an easy smile. “He’s only young.”
“Only young and insubordinate,” she said. Her sharp gaze turned to Totsuka. “Quite unseemly for a student under mentorship such as yours; someone of your caliber should hardly even be seen with him. Beauty as he may be, his spirit will never mold a geisha! It would be in your best interest to teach him some manners before somebody else does.”
At that last part, her gaze turned to Yata again. Yata frowned at her back as she continued walking. His hands tightened, forming into fists at her words.
Totsuka’s smile was kind and soft as he took Yata’s hands in his, loosening them and folding them properly at the boy’s front again. The former geisha’s fingers then lifted his chin high in the air as though mimicking pride. With one last reassuring brush on his cheek and a nod signaling Yata to follow, Totuska turned to keep up with Mrs. Kazuki.
Yata took a deep breath to calm himself, feeling his face untense and his mouth straighten from its frown. As he let the breath out, he took the first few steps to begin trailing after the two former geisha.
Okay, now that that's out of my system, I'll get back to my WIPs.
